  1. Reading a story this morning about the plight of the Phillies--a reporter asked Manuel why he took Hamels out the other night for Bastardo with a 3 hit shutout after 7 innings. Bastardo s*** the bed in the 8th and cost the Phillies the game. Manuel's reply: "Bastardo is our 8th inning guy." That says a lot about the state of pitching in baseball. My, how things have changed--for the worse.
  2. Now that Youks is safely out of Boston, the talk on mlbtrade rumors is what a great team guy he is, intense player, all-star 3rd baseman last year, blah blah blah. I don't recall him being an all-star at 3B last year. And the media has been passing him off as a clubhouse problem prior to his trade. I guess they just don't like the Red Sox. Youks is OK, as long as he plays for some other team. It was also reported the other finalists were the Guardians and the Dodgers. And the addition of Zach Stewart made the difference (!) I would think that getting him out of the AL would have made a bigger difference.
  3. Can't see Hamels leaving Philly. Not while they're paying Pap $13mil to close. And Halladay has some shoulder questions. Hamels will get Cain money. With CC and Ells out, the Sox have had some surprises in the OF. Nava, Ross and Kalish give them enough depth to deal Ellsbury/Boras. That assumes CC is untradeable. The kids are changing the face of the team, and there will shortly be a logjam in the outfield.
  4. ...for an ace starter. They have good depth in the OF right now, in case you haven't noticed. Their weakness is pitching.
  5. They had no place for Youks, but he could come back to haunt them playing for the WSox. Did they have any NL options? I would guess no. They are paying most of his salary, so no benefit there. Lillibridge was a super sub last year, but has started slowly this year. He plays IF and OF? That's an advantage, I suppose. The pitcher looks about as useless as Melancon.
  6. Well, they can't put pitch limits on Pedey. He's still tough.
  7. Actually I like Beckett. He's a big game pitcher. Lester looks out of shape to me. He needs to lose a few pounds. Buchholz looks like the strong wind would blow him over. None of these guys, in my view, throws enough pitches in a quality start. It's a 100 and out. Sometimes less. The toughness ain't there.
  8. 'Fraid so, at this point. They still haven't done the deal.
  9. I doubt the media has accurately presented the internal Red Sox situation. The trouble is, the media is a like a school of sharks: once they smell blood they move in quickly for the kill--in bunches.
  10. Like I said, Beckett, Buchholz and Lester have become the Three Pussies.
  11. Pedey's wearing his red sox high today and has shaved his beard. What gives, Pedey?
  12. Ha. Valentine gets interviewed in the dugout--saying Cook has a good sinker. Just as Cook throws three letter high meatballs to Hinske, who promptly hits the third one out of sight--near the 420 sign. MacDonald looked like a deer in headlights chasing Hinske's two blasts out there. What sinker??
  13. It's a shame. But AdGon and now Middlebrooks have pushed him out of Boston, along with the injuries.
  14. If they're smart , they'll deal Ellsbury for an ace starter like Felix. Or maybe even Garza. Ellsbury is rapidly becoming expendable, especially if CC comes back better. CC and Kalish make Ells expendable, especially with Boras as his agent.
  15. except for Meredith.
  16. Confidence is about 50% of performance in sports. You have to handle the kids right.
  17. That sounds like what it was. It was a bad deal for him, and he never recovered until he was traded. I don't think Tito was very good with young players.
  18. They got to do a deal now. Get the poor guy out of the dugout. They aren't playing him.
  19. Pedey got 3 hits yesterday, so maybe the thumb isn't a factor. I'd like to see that Ciriaco up too, but Punto is under contract. They're paying him, and that's a factor. I think we all agree the club had a tired look, and the new faces really helped. Too bad the front office didn't see that sooner, when they were loading the team up with cheap retreads.
