    So they'll let Bay sit until February? I doubt it. Regardless of how much money they have, the Yankees don't control the market. When a FA sets a deadline, and the Yankees aren't ready to offer them the best contract, the FA will sign with another team.

    You know what? You're right. I had misread my source. Still, I'd be happy to take a 1st round pick from the Yankees. I'm sure Jacko's gonna give me s*** for this, because this is his once a month on average since I've joined that he actually proved me wrong. And he's all about small victories, with the amount of times he's proven wrong on this site, but I could care less. He's the laughing stock of this site, and no one buys his ******** story about being a doctor.

    Do you at least admit you were wrong about Bard? He's just as good as the reliever Chamberlain has been. And Chambo hasn't shown much as a starter.

    I'm pretty sure Saito's also a Type A, so the draft picks we'd get if he signed elsewhere would absorb the two we'd lose if we signed Matt Holliday. I know Penny's a Type B, and Smoltz has got to be at least a Type B as well, perhaps a Type A. I think the only way we wouldn't gain draft picks from the Yankees for Bay would be if we maxed out on the compensation draft picks. And in order to do that, I think we'd have to not sign any Type A or Type B free agent at all (not likely).

    I'm not so sure that we couldn't get anything of value for Penny. Before Daisuke's injury, the Phillies were reportedly "all over" Brad Penny. http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/20090628_On_Baseball__Who_will_be_buying_and_selling_.html?page=1&c=y Whoever misses out on Roy Halladay, whether it be the Phillies, Cardinals, or some other team will probably at least kick the tires on Penny. We could possibly get an upgrade at our corner infield positions or middle infield positions on the bench.

    I don't think there's any clear cut answer whether we'd be better off with Penny or Buchholz in the rotation. Buchholz is obviously more of a high risk (not that Penny himself doesn't carry risk), high reward guy while Penny is more of a low risk, low reward pitcher. He's never going to be more than just solid.

    No one's saying they won't beat us out for home field advantage. We're just discussing hypothetically whether or not home field advantage is actually an advantage in baseball.

    There is no game 7 in the divisional series, so either he starts game 3 of that series on short rest (which I'm pretty sure guarantees normal rest for game 1 of the ALCS) or he starts game 4 of that series, and would be available for game 1 of the ALCS on short rest or Game 2, possibly even on normal rest. It's no guarantee, but Game 1 or 2 do seem like the most likely games for Sabathia to start. It's hard to tell because the schedule is always different.

    That's true about the first 2 games. Still I like the idea of having 4 games at home should it go to a game 7 and I like Beckett and Lester pitching at home (if in fact that's possible). Plus, I like the idea of Sabathia starting in Fenway Park. It seems like he's gotten a little too excitable in his past playoff starts.

    I doubt Epstein would mind taking two of the Yankees' 2010 draft picks off their hands.

    The case could be made. But the way Beckett and Lester pitch at home, that's where I want them to be pitching. At Fenway, Beckett is 6-0 with a 2.44 ERA and Lester is 4-3 with a 3.14 ERA. Plus, I feel like when a team wins the first two games, there's less pressure to start their best pitcher on short rest. The Red Sox could go to Wakefield for a 4th game and have the other 3 starters nice and rested for the last 3 games of the series.

    Maybe you disagree but I think home field advantage may be more important this year than it's ever been for the Yankees the way balls are flying out of the new stadium. That park plays perfect for a lefty heavy, power hitting team. They are 29-16 at home (.644) and 25-21 on the road (.543). And if the playoffs do come down to an ALCS between the Red Sox and Yankees, I know I'd prefer the Red Sox have home field advantage. They've gone 31-14 (.689) at home this year, the best home record in baseball.

    Chamberlain pitched impressively. It looks like the 8 days off really help him, I haven't seen that kind of velocity on his fastball since the beginning of the year.

    That's an isolated incident. An umpire only gets on my s*** list if they consistently make bad calls. And I don't know too many fans of any team who like Bucknor. Last time I was at Fenway an umpire called out Youkilis on what was very clearly a check swing. The guy behind me said, "Who's at first, CB Bucknor?" And when I looked out there, sure enough it was.
