    Yup. You know I think letting go of Miller is a mistake. Only acceptable if there is a useful piece now.

    Are you serious? Price is one of the 4-5 best pitchers in baseball. Hanley was a good player but is toast. fatboy has never been more than average, Porcello, who was one of my favorite opposing pitchers is probably no more than a 4, and Buch is an abject failure to develop into anywhere near his lofty potential. I'm not biased. I see things for how they are without a Homer taint. I usually respect your opinions. But lately you have been beating the same wrong drum over and over. You have no respect for other opinions unless they coincide with your own. It's boring.

    That is an obvious assumption but may not be true. It could be that DD is receiving newish offers or it could be that he has operated by design ( his own ) so far and has planned on moving some of the parts you listed. Maybe he knows what he is doing. I do recognize that the well is not endlessly deep.

    In any case the M's fans are ******** about this trade. They think that Miley and Elias are comparable and that they lost an excellent young BP arm. Go figure. As I have pointed out several times and Sk has reminded us, 200 inning eaters are not an easy commodity to find. Just look at our starting 5 to see that. I like the upside of a hard throwing young BP arm in Smith. I hope that the Boston starters can pitch well enough not to over burden the pen. If they don't, this trade will have accomplished very little in the end.

    And that would be a good reason to make the trade. Miley is serviceable as a 4 or 5 in the Seattle rotation. Is Smith any good? Has he been consistent?

    Miley had the greatest value ( IMO ) among himself, Buch, and Kelly. Sorry to see him go as he was useful now and likely would continue to be so. I hope the relief arm they grabbed is worth it.

    Did the Iwakuma deal involve sacrificing a draft pick too?

    Yup. He would have been an upgrade from some of the Sox SP.

    I agree. The Sox acted way to quickly.

    Sure, painted in that context, Price is a greater risk. However that does not negate that at $13.mil Buch is a waste of time. He has proven to be not reliable for an entire season. If Price fails to produce over the 7 year term than yes, he was a massive failure. Buch is much cheaper but he can be a failure too. And unlike Price, Buch stands a much greater chance of being worthless.

    I just don't see any need for controversy regarding GMs and such. It's all milk over the dam as far as I am concerned.

    Even cheaper than the 2/38 or so I had suggested that the Sox offer him. Do the Cubs have to cough up a draft pic?

    $30.+ mil per year is roughly $1. mil per start. That is a big number 1.

    There is absolutely nothing to regret about getting Price. Nothing. He is is a 200 inning, 32 start, Cy Young winner that can still win the award and the dude has a sub three to three point zero ERA beast that should win 16+ games each year for the next 3-4 years. I do not completely subscribe to WAR evaluations, pitchers included. I read today that at least one MLB team give a value of one WAR as $8. mil So it was determined that 6 WAR Price would need 27 WAR through the end of the deal to be "worth his contract." I see this as a close to sure thing. The Sox currently have 42 men on the roster. Two bodies must get moved.

    I'm looking forward to the naysayers' lectures on back end of contracts and dead money. The farm system is doomed and all. Meanwhile the Sox just landed the best possible option at SP. Not to be confused with the two best offensive players available last off season. Price is actually still quite good. Need to round out the pen with two or three decent arms along with a bunch of guys trying out. Still a bunch of "ifs" on this team but I am feeling much better about the immediate future of the Sox for today, anyway.
