  1. @BOSSportsGordo Garrett Cooper is starting for the Red Sox tonight. Vaughn Grissom is not, because he has the flu. No word yet as to when he could see the field.
  2. IDK, the defensive metrics can be a bit much for me TBH. Mercurial and inscrutable at times.
  3. I've heard this draft is very top heavy with talent (first 18 picks or so) and then falls off. They should take best available and then just grab a couple high octane HS arms. Sox have a good track record of taking HS arms: Groome, Ball, Owens, Scherff, Kopech, Buttrey.
  4. It's hard for me to single out which defensive metric I prefer because I never know which one I need for the current argument. However, I've read a lot of arguments against OAA for IFers and that small samples of DRS are extremely skewed. I really don't look at UZR/150 much anymore. I can say quite certainly that any OF that included both Manny and Wily Mo was going to be s***. That the Sox put Wily Mo in the OF for 154 games is wild in retrospect. The original argument of "well they had good fielding SS's in 06, but got worse" ignores what happened with the rest of the ballclub at the time.
  5. If you actually look at Statcast, he was in a higher percentile last year for hard hit and barrel %. Hit ball have been harder this year against Cooper. Average exit velo '23: 87.1 Average exit velo '24: 88.4 The main improvements are chase % and bb %.
  6. No s***, huh... It's almost like I provided a list of OF statues afterwards to prove that point.
  7. The reason they sucked in 2006 was pitching and defense. Pitchers with an ERA under 4.30 and over 20 innings: Schilling 3.97/204 Paplebon 0.92/68 Gabbard 3.51/25 19th in fWAR, 25th in ERA (4.83), 14th in xFIP (4.50), 28th in BABIP 30th in DRS, fewest errors committed Manny -13 DRS Wily Mo - 8 DRS Loretta - 7 DRS Coco Crap - 6 DRS Youk LF - 5 DRS Kapler - 4 DRS
  8. Criswell: '23 AAA 84 Inn, 4.33 xFIP '23 MLB 33 Inn, 4.54 xFIP '24 AAA 10 Inn, 4.75 xFIP '24 MLB 11 Inn, 4.57 xFIP Seems that the xFIP has been pretty consistent as of late regardless of your concerns over SSS's impact on his current xFIP. I guess he's just a 2.50 ERA guy now? He has never had an ERA under 3.70 outside of the Complex League FFS.
  9. The Sox aren't attempting to rush him back. He was just saying how great he feels and he was aiming to pitch this season. He had the Story procedure, not the full TJS.
  10. Romy can field any position except for C and has hit the ball much better in MiLB than Meidroth has. Meidroth still needs to show that he can handle AAA for a longer period than just one month. If Meidroth can't backup SS, I don't see the point of him on this team right now. Kavadas is superfluous. He can't platoon with Casas or the starting DH. He can't be moved to any other position.
  11. It's also more in line with his career numbers than his current ERA.
  12. Nobody else can backup 3B and Raffy isn't exactly Cal Ripken Jr over there.
  13. Giolito is saying that he's going to pitch this year...........
  14. Cooper is bland, but considering the lack of RHB, I think he sticks on the roster through the end of the year.
  15. Nooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. The other stuff is definitely averagish. It's good enough to get by with a carrying tool. I'm not sure about speed though. May be slightly below average?
  17. Statcast compiles is and sells it to teams I believe.
  18. I've heard that may be the case with Bleis in Salem right now as well. 245 BABIP for an athletic guy like him is very unlucky.
  19. Sometimes. For example, Blaze Jordan really struggles with velo and has to put the ball the other way. He can't get his full swing on it which reduces the exit velo. If he gets something in the low 90's, he can pull it with authority for 400+.
  20. And he has a good bat to ball skillset. However, it is just unknown if he can thread that needle in MLB. It is very rare for someone with his profile to succeed at the highest level. If he had more speed and a better glove, I think there'd be a lot more excitement around him. He's a smart player and he seems to be getting as much as he can out of himself, but there's always an unknown ceiling. The worry is that more advanced pitchers will just challenge him over and over again knowing that he won't be able to punish anything in the zone. Why walk him if at most he can do is get a bloop single?
  21. He makes a lot of contact, but it's weaker than average contact.
  22. There is private data that Statcast doesn't give out that SoxProspects has, but you can also go to the individual game feeds to see exit velos and such for any park that has the right equipment.
  23. It's only been 11 innings. You can chalk up a lot of his success to SSS.
