  1. Why does anyone care about the Penny/Smoltz signings? Low risk/low reward types aren't worth wringing your hands over.
  2. Also, http://archive.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2006/04/18/punctuation_mark/ I liked Loretta AND Graffanino. They were both at least as good as Bellhorn.
  3. I'm not going to judge the entirety of Theo's Sox career by 2005-2006.
  4. Pfft, you've been stealing my lines for years now...
  5. Alright, time to hug it out.
  6. That's a lot of a lot's.
  7. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/jaws_2B.shtml JAWS gives the edge to Pedroia at the moment.
  8. Which ballgirl did he bang?
  9. Yes, it should matter. Even if Papi has ice in his veins, I don't expect him to hit better than normal against LHP in late innings. To me, clutch is just replicating normal performance under high stress situations.
  10. They went from having a replacement level player who banged the ballgirl (the cover of the Tessie record, I believe) to the greatest 2b in team history. I'd say it's too close to call.
  11. Unless they are playing the EVIL EMPIRE. All those games are super duper important and maybe more important than even the playoffs!!!!
  12. Tough part would be trying to normalize that close and late stats since Papi probably faced a ton of really tough lefties in the late innings, something he wouldn't typically see innings 1 - 6 or in blowouts.
  13. That's a steal, IMO.
  14. It's semantics, but I believe that most people would assume that "not all that great" would mean "mediocre" or "substandard" rather than "close to great."
  15. No, but the prospect list for September 2010 looks pretty good (Rizzo, Middlebrooks, Kalish, Iggy, Doubront, Reddick, Lavarnway). Plus he was able to flip others (Kelly and Feuntes) in a trade to get an All Star 1b. You could make a case that the farm was pretty barren in 2008, but all other years included a good deal of talent.
  16. That's a poor correlation. Just because he's the only one making a fuss, doesn't mean everyone else always understands your posts.
  17. You can't eat your cake and have it too. Theo did a good job of restocking the farm with that draft.
  18. http://soxprospects.com/history.htm The Sox Prospects list from September 2011 looks good enough to me.
  19. After the Nomar trade: 3b went from Mueller to Lowell (good call) 1b went from Millar to Youk (good call) SS went from OCab to miscellaneoud (OCab became a journeyman so it's not a big loss) 2b went from Bellhorn to Pedroia (remains to be seen if this was a good idea) LF stayed with Manny until 2008 when Manny forced his way out of town (can't blame Theo here) CF went from Johnny Damon to Coco Crisp/TEllsbury (good call) RF went from Trot to JD Drew (good call) C stayed with Tek until 2011 He dumped Pedro and Lowe when other GM's may have kept them on for nostalgia. He found a suitable replacement at closer. Theo kept trying to bring in high priced talent while consistently adding young talent from the farm system. I really can't fault Theo for much of anything from 2005 - 2011. He should probably still be the GM today, but LL had JH's ear and they dumped the wrong guy.
  20. Those two domes are pretty drafty!
  21. Yup, the team was good enough to win the WS 2 years later with minor tweaks. If the Sox don't bring in Bobby V in 2012, I bet they win 90+ games.
  22. It's also possible that his previous choking just burrows it's way into his brain and he becomes unable to replicate his normal performances. To me, I think he just sucks when pitching in the cold. He struggled out of the gate last year and has struggled as the weather gets colder in October.
  23. If he couldn't get into the IF rotation for the Padres, he's nothing more than a AAA guy. Nothing much to say.
  24. I think it's completely fair to say "David Price has choked in the playoffs." Does that necessarily mean he'll choke the next time he's in the playoffs? Nope. You can say the same thing for Mark Melancon in Boston. Melancon choked as the closer for Boston. Does that mean he would always choke in Boston? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe he does do better in a smaller market in the NL East like DC or Pittsburgh? It would be very fair for someone to say "I don't want the Sox to bring back Melancon, because he choked here."
