Pick up a contract like the Rays (under Bloom) did with Charlie Morton. Find the guy whose value exceeds or equals the contract. I think signing Bauer will be an overpay for what he'll bring to the staff. He's a guy you get if you're on the brink of being a WS contender. The Sox aren't there right now.

Both Bauer and Stroman turn 30 next year. I think Bauer is kinda overrated TBH. I think both will get really massive contracts and I'm not sure at this point if I'd want either. Honestly, I bet you could get more for Eovaldi than Odor. It would almost make more sense to eat a part of his salary and trade for prospects.

I guess? Even if you aren't high on him, I think Lakins is better for your club than Weber or Walden. If he plays well during the season, you could spin him off for someone else. If he stinks, well that's probably not much worse than some of the guys at the bottom end of the roster. I wonder if there was an off the field reason they moved on from him. Cubs moved him really quick too.

I think that's why everyone found the move so curious. He was young and pitched ok in 2019. Guys like Mazza and Weber are very easy to come by. Why give up so quickly on a younger guy?

They couldn't reassign him, they had to put him through waivers. They traded him, then the Cubs tried to put him through waivers and the O's grabbed him. If the Sox put him through waivers, they would have gotten nothing for losing him (rather than getting a MiLB catcher in return).

Well, it was something that we talked about on here and I've seen elsewhere (SoxProspects, Over the Monster, etc.). Earlier Friday evening, the Red Sox made a minor trade — a theme of the last few weeks for them — acquiring left-handed pitcher Matt Hall from the Tigers in exchange for minor-league catcher Jhon Nuñez. At the time of the deal, they had not announced what the corresponding roster move would be to make room for Hall on the 40-man roster. Now we know. The Red Sox announced they have designated Travis Lakins for assignment. They now have ten days to either trade him or move him through waivers to try and keep him as a depth option. There are other pitchers who I would have designated ahead of him, like Hector Velázquez, Ryan Weber or Chris Mazza. All of them could serve as rotation depth, however, and the Red Sox both don’t have a lot of that while also boasting a rotation with plenty of injury risk. In terms of the three guys mentioned above, Velazquez was eventually DFA'd and Mazza struggled as a starter, but has pitched rather well in a SSS out of the pen.

If they really want to tank, the next 4 lineups should look pretty ugly. If they want to tank, Arauz, Puello, Chavis and Lin should be in every lineup. You can even keep JD in there too.

Dalbec's fielding per SoxProspects: Field: Hands work well and footwork is usually reliable. A little stiff and has some trouble getting down on ground balls when charging the ball. Doesn't have great range, but makes up for that somewhat with his length, allowing him to cover more ground than his feet would normally allow. Has made great strides since he joined the Red Sox at third base. Regressed somewhat at third base in 2019 and projects as an average defender there. Also has seen significant time at first base at higher levels, in large part due to presence of Rafael Devers at third base in Boston.

Dalbec is not a "plus defender" at 3B. By all accounts, he's average.

Devers also has a lot of athleticism. His defensive issues are less about his glove and more about his arm. He could actually be a very good fielding 1B.

Because at the time, we were all wondering why players like Lakins would get dumped, when Weber was still on the 40 man. He seemed to be a guy you could sneak into your MiLB system. Weber seemed like the most obvious "just a guy" pitcher.

I think the Sox should have prepared for a season without Sale. It was obvious that there were huge injury concerns.

Much easier to just pull a reliever after 3 guys then to pull a starter early on.

When Fernandez died, Trout had already amassed almost 50 career fWAR.

I doubt it only because pitcher careers are much more unreliable. Great in 13, missed time in 14 and 15, great in 16. There's a much higher risk for a young pitcher to either fall off or get injured than a guy like Trout.

I liked him when he was punching Bautista and hitting bombs. That was ages ago in baseball years.

@alexspeier Assuming 2021 draft order is determined by reverse order of 2020 standings, the Red Sox still sit in position for the third pick but could fall as far as eighth.

The idea that Weber would be able to stick in the rotation was definitely not a good one even if ERod had been healthy.
