  1. Ian Browne: Devers now batting second. Vazquez to the 5-hole. Arroyo now at second, batting seventh, with Hernandez in center. Again, Verdugo out due to a nagging back. Game will be delayed.
  2. Tony La Russa did not know that he could have used Jose Abreu at second base as the free runner instead of closer Liam Hendriks. Was informed of an amendment to rule by @JRFegan. "I'm guessing you know the rules better. Now I know," he said
  3. Sox are 8th in team ERA, 11th in WHIP for relievers. The starters are 12th in team EAR, 19th in WHIP. As for the offense, they are 4th in runs and 1st in OPS.
  4. @SoxNotes Xander Bogaerts’ rankings among shortstops in 2021: .351 AVG – 1st .385 OBP – 1st .604 SLG – 1st .988 OPS – 1st 16 XBH – 1st 10 doubles – 1st 39 hits – 1st Since Apr. 20, he leads the AL with 6 HR (in only 13 games). He has homered in 3 of his last 4 games.
  5. My roommate bought a keg in 2001 for a going away party. We already had a fridge full of beer. He stated "I told everyone there would be a keg, so we need a keg." When I moved out, he had taken all the shelves out of the fridge and thrown the keg in there so that it wouldn't go to waste. The last time I drank out of a keg was 2010 for the Saints Superbowl as my friends were doing a Superbowl Beer Olympics.
  6. He seems to be behind. I wonder if the neck and covid issue set him back
  7. Moon may remember this one: The earliest Oxford citation (from the May 20, 1883, issue of Sporting Life) has a baseball for the target: “He hit the ball fairly on the nose, sending it clear to the right field fence.”
  8. The use of the expression in baseball showed up in the 1970s. The earliest baseball example we’ve found is a comment by Reggie Jackson in the Sept. 15, 1977, issue of the New York Times: “The night before, I met George Steinbrenner in P. J. Clarke’s and he told me I’d win the next game with a home run. He also picked up my tab, so that’s another 30 dollars in the package. I hit the ball on the screws and I knew it was gone.”
  9. They should just have gone with screws/screw %/screws above average/total screws for the year.
  10. I thought it was just called "hitting it on the screws."
  11. I thought that was Ron Guidry?
  12. I don't know. I didn't make the stat!
  13. Right. A barrel has nothing to do with the outcome. It's just a measure of how hard the ball is being hit. Launch angle plays a little factor in it as well. Cordero could barrel his next 10 AB's and still not get a hit.
  14. Ok, but a well placed blooper is not considered a "barreled ball."
  15. It's about how hard the ball is hit. You can barrel a ball right at CF and get an out.
  16. @SoxNotes The Red Sox lead the AL in runs scored (149). They lead the majors in AVG (.265) and OPS (.776). Xander Bogaerts leads the majors in hits (39). J.D. Martinez leads the majors in RBI (27). Nathan Eovaldi, Nick Pivetta, and Eduardo Rodriguez are tied for the AL lead in wins (4).
  17. It's basically a measure of how hard the ball is hit. To be Barreled, a batted ball requires an exit velocity of at least 98 mph. At that speed, balls struck with a launch angle between 26-30 degrees always garner Barreled classification. For every mph over 98, the range of launch angles expands.
  18. IDK. I thought all along the Sox were an 86 win team. They have an outside shot at getting a WC birth. Anything can happen once they get in. If Sale and ERod are both healthy, this team could make a good run. Also, I think this team will look much more complete once Downs and Duran arrive. If Casas is hitting like Devers in AA, he'll be slotted in at 1B. The lineup could get very dangerous towards the end of the year.
  19. Can we wait for those bad games until we have to agree with Splinter?
  20. I'm not sure there's a big difference between AA and AAA either.
  21. My assumption was that I'd ignore the bottom of the league which basically use #4's for their ace. I think he's a solid #3 on a competitive team.
  22. Sox have the 2nd best record in MLB. The Bruins are 10th in points. C's are a Jekyll & Hyde team. They could run the table in the playoffs, but they aren't consistent enough.
  23. Pivetta is 42nd in fWAR. Considering the amount of teams there are, he's probably a #3 right now.
