    Safer choice is to take the money. If he can stay healthy and have a normal season, I don't think his next contract would be materially affected.

    It has nothing to do with bargain rates or Bloom being a fortune teller. You ADD at the deadline to bolster your pen. Adding another arm (better than Robles and Davis) would have mitigated any risk of Barnes slowing down or could at least stretch a game from lock down 8th and 9th (Otto and Barney) to a lockdown once you got to the 7th.

    Better to have him underperform for one year and come off the books than to sign him long term and for him to be a drag on the rotation.

    And that only works if you have a great bullpen. If you have a mediocre to poor bullpen, it may not be a good idea.
