  1. @JonHeyman Jose Abreu was Boston’s No. 1 outside target. The Red Sox met with him as soon as free agency opened. This better not have been the case.
  2. Pass. I'd rather have Bogey or Correa.
  3. Montero Santana
  4. Whitlock was a great pick, but without Andriese teaching him the changeup grip, maybe he's not the same pitcher? We'll never know. With all the reliever churn since Bloom has been here, the only success story being Schreiber is pretty scary.
  5. If you are going to build through your farm, you need to either extend your players, replace them with in house options or trade them before their contract runs out. Players Bloom has extended: Whitlock Barnes? Players Bloom has replaced with in house options: Moreland>Dalbec>Casas Plawecki>Wong Wacha>Bello Misc Relievers>AAA squad Players Bloom as traded: Betts>Verdugo Extending QO's to Bogey and Eovaldi isn't going to replenish the farm the way trading them a year earlier would. Letting guys like JD walk out the door isn't going to help the future.
  6. McGuire ended the year with the same amount of fWAR as Vaz had, but with 150 less PA's. He was 17th best in the league. That's starter level.
  7. If he was hired to find gems in the rough, he's done a pretty miserable job of it.
  8. German still isn't ready as he doesn't have any secondary pitches. Walter will be 26 and has 7 innings above AA. He has an MLB caliber arm, but I'm not sure it's going to be much better than what Winckowski showed in 2022. Murphy is probably a bullpen arm. He got hit around in AAA last season. I'm not sold that he's an upgrade over Crawford or Winckowski. The rotation is currently: Sale Paxton Bello Pivetta Whitlock If they add Kodai Senga or Corey Kluber, the rotation looks a little better. I'm not sure they can count on both Sale AND Paxton to be in the rotation. Then having Hill as a 2nd half signing would make sense for a stretch run.
  9. I'm not sure that's saying much at all especially since they are still looking for a starting catcher apparently.
  10. I disagree that he was hired to find gems in the rough. He was hired to rebuild the farm system and to keep the big club competitive until the ecosystem could sustain itself rather than constantly need to grab outside FA's. However: 1. BOS hasn't been good the whole time he's been here 2. The prospects he's traded for haven't really lit the world on fire 3. The Sox haven't been good at retaining their own talent so rebuilding from their farm may be a fruitless endeavor anyway
  11. They threw a combined 147 innings last season. They'd have to get a lot of bulk innings at some point to get there.
  12. @redsoxstats Ryan Fernandez gets a nice write-up in the BA Rule 5 preview. @IanCundall mentioned his breakout and big time pitch metrics this summer. Finished the year out with elbow soreness. Thad Ward also makes the BA list with back-end starter upside. I can't remember the last time 2 prospects were noted as being potential Rule 5 selections. We'll see who can sneak through. Draft is next Monday.
  13. If you're going to add the Barnes extension, you should put the Whitlock extension in there. The Story contract is fine. Unless he gets a career ending injury, he should be worth the money even if he plays 2b. The do-overs would be Paxton, Richards, Diekman. Those were fairly low stakes though.
  14. I think Winckowski or Crawford could take a step forward, but I don't think it's likely. Maybe they can do it in a bullpen role? The guys with the "impact" arms in the system are Bello, Mata, Wikelman and Perales. Only two have a shot to play a role in the short term. German, Fernandez and Wallace have velo, but various concerns.
  15. That Sale contract is killing the Sox. Is it going to be a 4th lost season for him?
  16. They need at least one SP. They could use a CP. If they don't come away with SS/OFer, they'll need to really explain what the short term plan is. I don't really care about C/DH at the moment. Seems much lower priority to me?
  17. Interesting note on the detailed 60-31 SP list: 41. Johnfrank Salazar Preseason Rank: Unranked 2022 Stats: 51 games, 205 PA, .297/.386/.394, 11 2B, 22 BB, 26 K @ FCL and Salem -“El Capitan” has endeared himself to teammates and coaches with his leadership and strong play. He impressed at the plate in 2022, particularly in the FCL where he hit .327 while walking nearly twice as often as he struck out. The team was going to give him a look at catcher at the canceled 2022 Fall Performance Program.
  18. Also, the Astros were able to sign Abreu because they are letting Verlander walk. They had 7 legitimate starters at one point and a lot of them a very cheap. When you can build from the farm, you can overpay for a guy or two and not worry about it. The Sox don't have that luxury in 2023.
  19. I'm not going to freak out about their first move. I'm going to wait and see what it looks like when camp opens. I just don't want to hear "we have to be better" at any point next season.
  20. There's always at least one team that gets overhyped due to "winning" the offseason.
  21. Last year's offseason was condensed into like a 36 hours signing period of insanity. He gets a pass for the timing of the moves. Bloom was actually fairly active last season: Paxton Hill Wacha Diekman Strahm Story Refsnyder The actual moves themselves can be called into question for sure.
  22. Letting their current players go to FA is an ownership decision. Lester Ellsbury Betts Bogaerts etc.
  23. Yes. However, the Sox need to show a little more aggressiveness than they have the past few offseasons. The fear is that their current inaction will lead them to not sign a real SS, corner OFer or impact pitcher (either closer or SP).
  24. Acquiring enough starters to fill 162 games rather than a 5 man rotation.
