  1. There might not be a pennant race if we stand pat at DH, either. I don't see too many people screaming for a panic move. I'm not against making moves that give us a better shot this year. I'm against Guzman because he doesn't give us the best shot to win in 2010.
  2. You're short-sighted then. A couple isolated errors is enough to get you to call for blowing $12M on a below average baseball player whose only saving grace is that he pretends to play shortstop?
  3. I dunno about Crespo, but I for one have not given up on Jed Lowrie. A lost year to injury doesn't mean he can't come back strong next year. and when it comes to the offseason, there are much more compelling people to trade for than Guzman, if we haven't cluttered up our roster and our budgets with the guy. You trade for Guzman to compete this year and let hell worry about next year. I don't prefer that approach.
  4. I have negative confidence in Guzman's glove, and for $8M a guy has to be the complete package, or at leas something resembling one.
  5. This team will be weaker now and going forward if Cristian Guzman becomes its everyday shortstop.
  6. You really think that taking the crap of 25 or more pampered jocks is that easy?
  7. Yes, but you also can't put forward the years of past performance you like, then turn and discount the ones that contradict you. That's called "cherry picking." my position, while possibly wrong, is at least honest. You are stretching the facts a bit to make your point. The only way to use past results to predict future ones is to use the WHOLE body of work. Otherwise all you're doing is setting yourself up for an undesirable result.
  8. Point worth considering, perhaps: All but one year of Guzman's American League career were absolutely miserable, with success coming at best in flashes. His overall career OPS is .699. His career OPS in the American League is worse. Guzman has an 81 career OPS+. Nick Green has a 72 career OPS+. Exactly where is the $8M worth of upgrade coming from?
  9. Then the best predictor is poor as crap and extremely undependable.
  10. And yet it does. Since the only way to be sure of the productiion of a ballplayer over a given period of time is in retrospect. the last time Guzman was in the AL he didn't stand a chance, and he was faster then. I just don't see where he's going to be worth $12M, or a portion of that and a prospect, to this franchise, not even with our production provlems at SS (which Guzman provides nothing CLOSE to a guaranteed solution for)
  11. if Guzman gives us 2 wins over replacement I'll be shocked.
  12. Yeah, but then we're out slightly less money and a decent prospect. I'd rather lose the money. I'd really much, much rather do neither of the above.
  13. Holy crap, Crespo and I on the same side of the argument, time to check the basement for icicles.
  14. If Guzman fails, that DOES damage to the franchise, and pays about $12M for the privilege. And Guzman's pretty fail-prone.
  15. Not so much that I want to add Guzman's.
  16. Future performance, pretty much.
  17. How much money do you want to sink into shortstop RSR?? Hanley's not going to be able to stick at SS indefinitely. I'd still do it since it's a smarter risk than Guzman, but getting Guzman surely makes Hanley less likely.
  18. Doesn't hurt 'em at all next year. Guzman might.
  19. Me I say that past performance is a poor predictor of future performance, especially with a SS who also had many mediocre seasons in the American League before joining the Nationals, and who is on the declining side of 30.
  20. oh no it so very much isn't. This team may not have a lot of limits on their financial flexibility, but those limits are present in some form, and sinking $17M into the shortstop position to wind up with the results we've been getting would probably strain those limits. They better be right about Guzman, is all I'm saying.
