  1. There's a maximum price you should be willing to pay for anything. Cristian Guzman's $8M salary, mediocre decision making and .699 career OPS scream louder than words to me that this is not a price this team should be paying for this shortstop.
  2. And what makes YOU think I'm only talking about this year? $8M is a lot of money to pay for an inconsistent player in a 2010 season in which we'll still be paying $9M for Julio Lugo as well. If he bombs, that's $17M in unproductive shortstops. This is a pretty substantial risk we're taking here.
  3. I do recognize that given the offsensive slump we're on there's a certain sense of "Try something! Try anything!" going on down here, but I just don't think this will go down as one of Epstein's better moves even if he does pull it off.
  4. If they're dang sure that what they'll actually be getting is the Cristian Guzman if the last ~3 years, they should get Cristian Guzman. Otherwise, they need to gut it out until Lowrie gets back. No, WCS we have another salary to dump.
  5. I don't like committing us to next year's salary on a guy after we just spent a lot of money to offload a very similar shortstop. This is an error prone SS with a career .699 OPS who will cost us $8M next year. How sure are we that what we're getting is actually a meaningful upgrade? I think we will wind up regretting Cristian Guzman.
  6. On paper yes, in practice, the guy sucked both times he tried to transition to American League ball. it's not exactly much of an accomplishment anyway. Although I'd argue that Alex Gonzalez was a better all around player than the Boston version of Renteria. It might have been a career year for Gonzo and a down year for Rent, but he WAS better in '06 than Rent was in '05..
  7. So give 'em Joshua Papelbon and make it good. For that amount of money they won't be looking for a huge return of talent.
  8. This is more like 2005 than 2006. Shallow rotation, aging and underperforming veterans, complete crapfest at short, one year rentals to fill out the rotation, the corner infield controversy, rookies called up in a frantic effort to save the season, it's all there.
  9. A generic reliever goes up there throws 1 2/3 innings and gives up a 2 run HR, that's a bad outing, sure. Letting the extenuating circumstances into the discussion, the kid showed some poise, and pitched well, got out of a nasty little jam in the 14th and nearly got out of the 15th as well. Add that to the fact that he never should have been pitching in the first place as he'd just been called up that day and likely did some travelling to get to the game in time, well, it's just not that big a deal that he gave up a 2 run shot to one of the better RHH's in recent history.
  10. We would quickly sour on Guzman. All batting average offensively, and error prone in the field. It's one thing to look at that on a stat sheet it's another to see it every day.
  11. Because alcoholism is such a laughing matter.
  12. You make it sound like it's a bad thing to be reactionary.
  13. that is not the only consideration and you know it. the real question is, would he make the Sox rotation, and future rotations, sufficiently better than they were before to justify the price paid. I don't believe so, or at least I think the answer is not clear. Everyone wanted Lee mostly because he was a politically acceptable alternative to Halladay and they wanted to see a big move made.
  14. A lefty who gives up a lot of quality contact (witnessed by his career h/9, echoed by this season's version). Put a guy like that in a park with the Monster and he's going to give up more doubles and HR's that might be singles in other parks. He might be fine, but it does add an additional element of risk to going after Cliff Lee. He's probably better off where he is. That besides the fact that most of his value is based on a singgle good year.
  15. That's not what I said. I said I don't think he's a good fit in the AL East and especially not in Fenway Park.
  16. Honestly this team reminds me more of 2005 than 2006. Right down to plugging in one year veterans into half the rotation.
  17. You think I want to be swept? It's just the way the land lies now. If Buchholz tanks, AGAIN, then we are going to be going into the final game with nothing left of the pen against a lineup that likes to work the count and wear down the starter. It won't be that difficult for the Yankees to neutralize Lester. We desperately need at LEAST a quality start from Buchholz. And that would qualify as his best start in more than a year. More than you can reasonably expect in other words.
  18. Not quite as much. We DID lose the game after all. Also because of those 3 innings by Aceves, they have a much stronger bullpen going into tonight. Another short outing by Buchholz makes a sweep not just possible, but likely. As it is we'll have a difficult job closing anything out tonight even if Buck gives us 6 strong innings.
  19. Are the Giants really picking up that contract? I know they're aggressive spenders but..
  20. I honestly can't think who else it might be but us.
  21. He's here.
  22. The Woodward acquisition means Woodward will be sitting in Pawtucket. Tazawa has definitely earned a look this year. Let's hope he makes the most of it. Also I kind of wonder how Michael Bowden feels about this.
  23. It's something to look at. I hope not of course, especially if it might mean we wind up stuck with Tek long into his decline.
