1. Remember...the Yankees significantly outspent the Red Sox each World Series-winning year (as well as other years).
Year | Red Sox | Yankees 2007 | $ 143,026,214 | $ 189,639,045 2004 | $ 127,298,500 | $ 184,193,950
If money truly doesn't matter to John Henry et al, one is forced to wonder why they don't spend more of it, given that the Yankees are certainly spending more of it.
2. Bummer. Leeann Tweeden mojo didn't work. At least it made the losing Game Thread a better place!
3. It is too early to surrender. Six-run-down Leeann Tweeden mojo: http://www.operagloves.com/Modernstars/LeeannTweeden/leeanntweeden-foh019.jpg
4. Heidi Watney mojo failed. Tina Cervasio mojo only narrowed the lead by two runs. Desperate times call for desperate measures. With five outs remaining, I summon Leeann Tweeden mojo: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/images/09/06/tweeden_clicks.jpg
5. Bump. One hour since the last post. I just taught Miss JHB how to make my famous curry recipe, a fusion of French and Tandoori cuisine. Boston is still six runs down.
6. OK...should've downloaded another Tina Cervasio image for each St Louis batter.
7. OK...emergency mojo: http://www.tinacervasio.com/App_Themes/Default/images/def_body_picture_06.jpg
8. Ummmm...is there any statistical evidence regarding the effectiveness of Heidi Watney mojo? Just sayin'...we could've made an error here.
9. Two-RBI Texas League single to left. 4-0 Cardinals. I appeal to the powers of light to reverse this evil plague...double off the wall...let good prevail, and let Red Sox Nation overcome this foul curse!
10. A 383-foot defensive swing two-run home run followed by a Texas League single. OK, LaRussa has made a deal with Satan. Let's see if we can prevail nonetheless.
11. Both the Yankees and the Red Sox face Houston and Cincinnati. Additionally, each team plays these other teams: Yankees: New York Mets (twice), San Diego, Pittsburgh Red Sox: Milwaukee, Philadelphia, St Louis, Arizona While this might not have looked like a huge difference preseason (excepting that the Yankees drew Pittsburgh), with the decline of the Padres and the Mets it's a big difference in the difficulty of the teams' schedules. A weighted average of these twelve games shows the Yankees facing .467 teams and Boston facing .553 teams, and considering the net effect of this difference to be worth about one game in the final standings is probably about right.
12. Meh...we faced a good starting pitcher backed up by excellent relief--we had to be better. I'd've liked Timlin to be better, but I didn't and don't fault Tito for using him. In hindsight, the four runs by Colon were enough to seal the loss. Hey, who's starting tomorrow's game thread? We need some fresh mojo...
13. I find myself wondering if the game thread has frozen... Base hit Moss...two-out double!
14. Unfair. Eric Gagne has talent but chokes in save situations. Mike Timlin pitches at a reliable Single-A level in any situation, regardless of the inherent stress. See? Timlin just walked Burrell--it was as if he were the leadoff hitter, not just another batter in a blowout game.
15. I wouldn't feel comfortable uttering those words. *** Two runs back in the sixth inning is a reasonable time to use Timlin. Two on, no outs. DP time...or, alternatively, loss of mojo time. :dunno:
16. Heidi Watney reports that Bartolo Colon was suffering from stiffness as he left the game. Upon reflection, if Heidi Watney is trying to get a few words from players as they leave the game, there may be more of that this year.
17. You know, I came back just in time for Pedroia's home run, too. Talksox mojo got better when Thumper and I showed up.
18. Well, I guess that the bat was traveling pretty fast on those three swings. Had it made actual contact with the baseball, it wouldn't have been a dribbler to third.
19. Thus qualified, no problem...for just that one month, July 23 - August 23, 2006.
20. Which first five starts? :dunno: *** Part of the issue with Lester in July-August 2006 was a high BABIP allowed from the worst Boston defense in recent years. Lester's rough BABIP allowed in those games ( (H-HR)/(BFP-BB-SO-HR) ) was .392, roughly 90 points worse than any MLB pitcher would post over the long run. Part was hitter-friendly summertime weather. A big part was comparing Lester to our hopes from AA and AAA; part was comparing him to his 5-0 record up until 23 July, 2006, the day he started to suck. Look at the stats...and look at the aggregate run support as a guide to the weather in which Lester was pitching, unless you want to check actual weather conditions game by game instead.
