1.
Stat | Last Year | This Year GB% | 34.4% | 48.3% HR/FB% | 13.0% | 8.9% HR/G | 1.41 | 0.66
More ground balls means fewer fly balls; fewer fly balls, plus fewer home runs per fly ball, means fewer home runs. Fewer home runs means WAY fewer runs. That, plus the reduction in BB you cite above, accounts for the difference.
2. Tek wasn't even blocking the plate on that collision. Duncan just made my lifetime s*** list. Nice throw by JD Drew.
3. Ellsbury's strike two call was accurate but surprising. Most umpires give the left-handed batters that location, while giving the pitcher a couple of inches outside. Had Ellsbury gotten that call, he wouldn't have been trying to defend the outside corner one pitch later, and it would've been 2-1 instead of a strikeout. Hansen fades badly after 25 pitches. Seventeen thrown so far...
4. The duration of a normal at bat has passed without Isringhausen throwing a pitch.
5. Hansen pwns Ludwick. I hope that everybody realizes that if Boston now pulls off a victory in their half of the inning, TheKilo is going to be insufferable regarding Hansen.
6. If Drew doesn't get it done, let's see what Moss can do. Edit: Let's see what Sean Casey can do.
7. Great bunt by Pedroia. The pitch was 92 mph with movement between that of a fastball and a slider...:dunno:
8. Pardon, I had to step away. For some reason, Papelbon didn't use his 97-98 mph fastball that Kennedy clearly couldn't catch up with on the pitch where he surrendered the game-tying double. Did Paps go with what Tek called? :dunno:
9. Three consecutive walks to drive home Pedroia. Remember I commented on the very fair strike zone earlier? Thank Gawd we were getting those calls just now.
10. Dave Duncan out to the mound. You know, I wouldn't prefer any other MLB pitching coach to Farrell, but if I had to choose among the others I might choose Duncan.
11. Ankiel played that Coco Crisp fly ball the way I handled a few balls in Little League. It made little sense to try for home with nobody out, but Coco might've made it.
12. Joene, a belated welcome! It was good seeing you in the game thread--let us know what you're thinking and post a few words if you get a chance. Thanks for joining us!
13. Joene, why do you think that we're struggling?
14. -1.2 today, the worst I've seen him all year...he's been around -1.0 when I've looked.
15. Lester's fastball was 95 mph in the first inning. It's now 88-92 mph.
16. How often does a pitcher successfully field a line drive? Pineiro snagged two in one half inning...
17. Two out double...Pedroia in scoring position for Drew.
18. On the bright side, I see no more rain. Radar showed a small thunderstorm and then about 30 miles to a major squall line crossing I-495. Let's hope that Pineiro is less effective in the bottom of the sixth.
19. It's raining pretty hard at Fenway now.
20. As attempts at diving catches go, JD Drew's was not the most elegant or effective: he had the reach to make the catch, but he missed the ball by almost a foot vertically.
21. Two-out line drive single by Coco. Looks to me as if Coco might be juicing again ...too bad it slows him down on the basepaths.
22. Tito is down to -2.8 D3 as of this morning. Each AL manager with a lower D3 for the season has already been fired. Tito is now worst in the AL.
23. Through four, Tim Timmons has done an exceptional job calling balls and strikes. He's only missed two pitches, calling one strike a ball for both Lester and Pineiro. Great catch Coco!
