  1. ugh, they are only setting us up for even more disappointment. Great, 0-2.
  2. Time for Ellsbury to step up and make this a 1 run game.
  3. Remember what happened last year with the rivalry? Maybe it will be the reverse this year.
  4. Spud, I look at a lineup the same way you do but most people only think offense when they refer to a lineup. It's just the way people talk about baseball right now, even if it is incorrect. I like to always take into account defense when discussing a lineup, but most folks don't.
  5. I'm still taking V-mart and Drew (obviously) over Posada and Swisher. Posada is getting old, V-mart had amazing numbers with the Sox, and Drew is just plain better than Swisher. C: V-mart 1: Tex 2: Pedroia (close) SS: Jeter 3: Arod LF: Ellsbury CF: Granderson (farily close) RF: Drew DH: Ortiz (though i could see him struggling)
  6. Swisher: 0.249 BA, 0.371 OBP, 0.498 SLG, 0.869 OPS, 129 OPS+ JD Drew:0.279 BA, 0.392 OBP, 0.522 SLG, 0.914 OPS, 133 OPS+ Swisher: HR/PA - 0.05, RBI/PA - 0.14, BB/PA - 0.16, K/PA - 0.21 JD Drew:HR/PA - 0.04, RBI/PA - 0.13, BB/PA - 0.15, K/PA - 0.20 Swisher: line with RISP: 0.277 BA, 0.380 OBP, 0.361 SLG, 0.741 OPS, 6 HR, 48 RBI in 160 PA JD Drew:line with RISP: 0.213 BA, 0.399 OBP, 0.463 SLG, 0.862 OPS, 7 HR,46 RBI in 143 PA Value Swisher: UZR -1.3, RAR 36.2, WAR 3.6 JD Drew:UZR 10.5, RAR 47.6, WAR 4.8 (UZR = fielding, RAR = runs above replacement, WAR = wins above replacement) JD across the board.
  7. Yeah. He's a career .372 OBP and posted a .405 OBP with the Sox last year. .323 is a borderline ridiculous.
  8. Lester looks ready for the season and Embree completely failed. He needs to get cut now, experiment over. Vmart had a monster game with 2 HR (1 granny) and 6 RBIs.
  9. Well, to be honest, this country would be far better off if it's citizens starting buying more American made products. A big part of the unemployment/awful pay stems from the fact that we buy way too many imported products now. I have to admit though, I'm part of that problem, I do like buying European products.
  10. You have to look at money ball as economic efficiency. It's meant to be a guide to getting the most production out of your money, not how to build an unbeatable team. Not everyone has money to throw around (Yankees) so the smaller market teams need to spend wisely. The A's couldn't compete with the Yankees because of the huge gap in payroll, the Yankees were using the same approach, but with 3x the budget. The A's never intended to field teams superior to the Yankees, they wanted to field the best teams they could with the resources they had and be as competitive as possible, and they did that.
  11. If you aren't satisfied with Beckett and Lester as a teams Aces than you won't ever be satisfied with pitching in baseball... ever. They are two of the top pitchers in baseball right now, it doesn't matter if they aren't HOF worthy GOATs, they are what we have in baseball right now. This "I'd take Lee over Beckett, don't resign Beckett" posts are ridiculous. We have a pitcher who has succeeded big time in Boston and has had a history of dominating in the playoffs (when healthy) and is a big part of the 2007 WS championship. No need to fix something that isn't broken.
  12. It's not just the WBC, it's Dice-K. He's still too caught up on his habits in Japanese baseball and his national pride. It would seem he cared more about playing in the WBC than he did for the team paying him $50 million.
  13. Our pitching last season wasn't good (16th in the league at 4.35) and was worse on the road (4.62). Adding Lackey with a Healthy DiceK, more mature Buchholz, and vastly improved defense should make a huge difference in run prevention. All that matters is run differential and teams built for pitching/defense are ideal for the playoffs.
  14. Well, I guess my values for sports arenas might be different than most peoples. To me, everything should be built with the field/game being the focal point. No other park puts the focal point on the field as much as Fenway/Wrigley. Now, if you just want to talk about "state-of-the-art" and luxuries, then Fenway would be near the bottom of the list. When you want to race (cars), you don't pick the most luxurious, you pick the quickest. It's the same for sports. I like the venues with the best atmosphere, not the most luxury.
  15. I know it's biased, but I'm sticking with Fenway. I've been to a few other ball parks (Camden Yards, Citizens Ball Park, etc) but I don't find any that have the "charm" of Fenway. Sure, some of the newer parks might look "nicer", have more "stuff", be more comfortable, etc, but when it comes to watching a game (you know, the reason you are there) nothing beats Fenway. I'll take a cheap hotdog, small seat, and old park when it means a loud, packed, intense, playoff-atmosphere game 81 times a year. As I've said before, you aren't going to Fenway to eat food or lay in a recliner, you're going to watch a baseball game. To me, all the "amenities" are distractions that real fans don't want or need.
  16. His career BA away is .300. This season his away BA was .306. The guy is just 27 and has improved just about every facet of his game each season. Do you really find it hard to believe that a career .300 hitter away from Petco, who is still blossoming into one of the most feared hitters in the league, can hit close to .350 playing 1/2 his games at friendly Fenway? Just the switch alone should make him a .300-.320 hitter, if he continues to improve and really adapts well to Fenway, there is no reason to believe he can't approach .350. Now, obviously we don't EXPECT him to hit .350, but I think its very well possible.
  17. I don't think this team can be standing pat right now. They NEED to do something at 1st/3rd. Kotchman shouldn't be a starting 1B in this league (and please don't think of Vmart at 1st and Tek behind the plate... oh god).
  18. I can dream right: We trade Ellsbury, Kotchman, Lowrie, +others for Gonzalez and then to fill the hole in LF... they get... Holliday. Pedroia Drew Youk Gonzalez Holliday Ortiz Vmart Cameron Scutaro
  19. Pretty insane what he has done on the road. For his 4 years in SD, he has hit 46 homers at Petco vs 84 homers on the road. Another thing that makes me want him: his RISP production. I checked his RISP line and I like it: .294, .407, .527, .934 Theo, get this man however you can.
  20. He does, it's "Thou shalt not kill... unless they believe in a different god.". As for this thread, WTF happened? I step away for a couple hours and come back and it's an incoherent flame war. Is the ban-hammer broken?
  21. They need a replacement for 3rd, Lowell isn't going to cut it. If they don't want to trade for Gonzalez or Cabrera then they should sign Beltre. Defensively, this team can't afford to be stuck with Lowell at 3rd.
