Barry Bonds is about to get a paycut. He had one of the best seasons in the National League last year. Glavine is going to get a paycut. Your performance slips, you get a paycut. If you give Torre credit for the turnaround, blame him for the poor start as well. You can't have it one way and not the other, Kilo. His "paycut" would have been more money than he ever made in his life if he made it to the World Series. His "paycut" would result in a higher salary than any manager [including incentives] in baseball next year regardless of how his team performed. The reality of it is this. Both the Yankees and the Red Sox, with their huge payroll disparity compared to the rest of the American League, SHOULD make the playoffs every year. Taking this Yankee team and making it into the playoffs is not a true accomplishment. Sorry, it isn't. It isn't a sense of entitlement, it's reality. We should make the playoffs. So should you guys. How many times have you guys missed the playoffs since you started spending? Is is an accomplishment for you guys to have made the playoffs? Come on. Torre would be making more money than at least three managers who had won a World Series over the last three years. When you guys bring back Schilling to another 4 year deal, then come talk about respect for Torre. Torre wanted to get rewarded for doing what was expected of him. Good riddance.

October 21st vs. Cleveland: ALCS Game 7

Congrats to all of you for your World Series berth. -
Dude, I could have won 4 championships with that team over 12 years. Making the playoffs IS NOT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT with the teams he's been given.

I wonder....if JD Drew comes up with the tying and winning runs on base in the 9th inning and hits into a double play...what the fans will say about him then.

October 20th vs. Cleveland: ALCS Game 6

It's over. Jeter is calling Manny for tee times. -
You know Kilo, it's not like they gave him something that wasn't attainable. That's what pissed me off. You old timers, remember Walter Alston? He won seven pennants for the Dodgers, and was the manager when they won their only Championship in 1955. You know what...he signed 23 one year deals. 23! Torre was given the option to remain as the highest paid manager in baseball. He was given the opportunity to make MORE money than he had by getting to the World Series. It's not like he was offered 1 million with 6 million in incentives. His base was higher than anyone in baseball with incentives included. You know, Arod/Boras wanted to negotiate in spring training for a new deal. Cashman said no, and now will probably lose Arod and he will eclipse his previous deal. Remember, Arod was coming off a down year for him and an absolutely horrible post-season. His season this year will probably net him an extra $100 million. Extra. I'm serious. If Torre had won it all this year, he would have been talking about a 10 million deal rather than a 5 million one. It's the nature of baseball. You get paid more as what you've done, than what you can do in the future, especially as a manager. Do I think Torre deserved a paycut? Absolutely. His team underachieved over the last three years. Over the last 6 years. He knew the deal going in. He was almost canned after last year. This coming as a surprise to him would be a surprise to me. The way I look at it...they offered him a better deal than he would get anywhere else with any team. Period. He would have made more money in base salary alone than Francona would have made in two years of winning the World Series. To him, it wasn't good enough to be the highest paid. He wanted an extra year guaranteed. Truthfully, his performance as a manager over the past few seasons did not give me confidence that he warranted a guaranteed second year. He also didn't want to take a pay cut. Torre is a good manager, and an unbelievably good person. He is active in causes, and brought a stability and desire to play in New York that was missing before his tenure. He will be missed. He is a poor strategist, but excellent in all other facets in managing. I will miss Joe Torre. I really will. However, I believe the Yankees made a fair offer. They went from firing him to giving him a chance to not only manage, but make more money than ever before by winning, which is the mission goal for this team. Truth is, and I am a little biased, but the Yankees are the favorites to win the division next year [if Arod comes back]. It's not like this is the Devil Rays who are putting in these incentives..it's the Yankees. I think Joe made a mistake in not taking the offer. If he did not like the offer, he could have graciously said he was getting older, he wanted to spend time with his daughter [i think she's 6 or so], that he had had a good run, but it was time for him to move on. That would have been the classy Torre I knew. He turned this into a spectacle on the way out, and that was sad to me. You guys don't believe the offer was fair? We do. He was to be paid more than any other, and with bonuses that would reach an extra 60% in income if certain attainable goals are met, not to mention a one year extension that would increase his salary 60% by attaining these goals. If you call that an insult, I pray to God my bosses insult me every year.

I kinda agree with Kilo. These guys are trade bait, if that.

REVERSE DICKPUNCH ALERT!!! TORRE TO BE ASKED BACK TO MANAGE NYY

I've had girls as hot as Jenna. I've had blowjobs that I guess were as good as the one's she gives. Never had both in the same girl. I'd be married if I had found that. -
You got rid of Grady Little, and the next year won with Francona. Hope the same magic applies to us next year.
-
I wouldn't leave if my next best offer was $20,000. Would you? Players take pay cuts all the time due to decreased performance. Why shouldn't everyone else?
-
Ok... Francona 2008 base salary $2 million Francona max bonuses: approx 1 million Torre 2008 rejected base salary $5 million Torre 2008 max bonuses $3 million Yet the Yankees were classless in what they offered Torre. WAKE UP. Of course they do. Hence the 19.2 million for 3 years, and a continuing salary making you the highest paid manager in baseball, which apparently wasn't good enough. Now go enjoy your green tea with Joe Torre.

Would you rather have Torre than Francano, Kilo? Is Torre worth to his team three times more important than Francona's is to his team? Twice as much as Pinella's? Four times as much as Leyland's? HE WAS OFFERED THE HIGHEST SALARY IN BASEBALL NO MATTER WHAT THE OUTCOME OF HIS TEAM'S PERFORMANCE!!! He turned it down. Do you realize that with every incentive for every other manager, he still would have made more than any manager in baseball next year? Joe Torre's sense of entitlement is staggering. Get it right. -
Here is the question. How good of a manager is Torre, in your mind, Kilo? Is he the best overall manager in the game? Does he suck? Is he middle of the road? Rank him for me. Then let's slot his salary, and find out what he should make. Bet you it's not close to the 5 million he was offered. Truth is, you wanted Torre back because that basically guaranteed you guys had a great shot at the AL East next year, better than you would have with say...a trained chimpanzee. Francona's managing style runs rings around this idiot.

You can't be serious, schillingouttheks. The offer: A one year deal that makes him the HIGHEST PAID MANAGER IN BASEBALL. A 1 million bonus for every round made in the post-season. A guranteed 8 MILLION DOLLAR salary for 2009 if he wins the AL PENNANT. Why on earth should we not be paid based on our accomplishments? I am paid that way in the real world. I get bonuses if I hit certain levels. To tell you the truth, I couldn't live my lifestyle WITHOUT hitting my bonuses. I factor in my bonuses before I get them because of how hard I work. He is a greedy son-of-a bitch, if you ask me. He wants to keep his 7 million dollar salary or get a raise...based on what? Three consecutive first round losses? Don't give me this s*** about what he won before. That's what his salary the last years was for. Seven million a year, fine, he delivered championships, and he was compensated. At this point, EARN YOUR MONEY. Apparently, he didn't want to. f*** HIM. What do you think the percentage of managers who would take the deal Torre walked away from would be? Let compare him to Francona. Francona was signed for two years, at 4.05 million. He has bonuses for...HOLY s***!!! Winning the ALDS, ALCS, and the World Series. His combined salary for two years is a million dollars less than Torre would get for ONE YEAR. I don't have access to bonus numbers, but I'm sure it's not $1,000,000 a round. Once again, don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out Joe, you greedy son-of-a bitch.

REVERSE DICKPUNCH ALERT!!! TORRE TO BE ASKED BACK TO MANAGE NYY

For five million a year, you can abuse me all you want. Do guys have any idea how much that is? That's $416,666 A MONTH. That's $96,153 A WEEK. For sucking at your job. f*** HIM. -
I have lost a shitload of respect for Torre. Lets look at it from a different angle. You have been given the highest payroll in the game for four years running, and have been eliminated in the first round three times, and presided over the biggest choke in post-season history in the other. You have burned out your pen nearly every season. In return for this, you were the highest paid manager in all of baseball by DOUBLE the salary of the number two guy in baseball. Now...to come back after another failed season, in which your team overcame a terrible spot to get into the playoffs, you failed to pull your team off the field when a plague of bugs attacked your pitcher, who was obviously struggling. You used your wunderkid reliever in a game in which you had a five run lead, rendering him ordinary if needed in an elimination game. You have repeatedly shown how you have no idea how to manage a pen that doesn't have three awesome relievers. In response to this, we will offer you a salary that keeps you as the HIGHEST MANAGER IN BASEBALL. We will guarantee your salary if you win the pennant next year. In other words, we will give you the chance to EARN your pay. It's called an INCENTIVE. You refuse it? You refuse a deal that makes you the highest paid manager in baseball by nearly 50%? After a season in which you didn't meet the expectations of your owner, fans, and city? A salary that would have been incrased to nearly THREE TIMES the next highest manager if you won the pennant [which, if all players come back, you have a great chance of doing]? WHAT AN *******. The only thing Torre has done is show me that he is as bad at managing contracts as he is a bullpen. Good riddance. Seriously. In Torre's tenure, he won four championships in twelve years. Considering the talent he was given, I find it very difficult to believe that any manager in the game couldn't have done the same. Don't let the door hit you in the ass.

Dice K sucks. Wang sucks worse. Ban orientals from baseball except for Ichiro.

2004, going to Gordon, overworking him. Blowing out the arm of Sturtze, Quantrill, Vizcaino. Overusing Proctor. Are you going to tell me that Torre knows how to manage a pen? I mean, come on...when your GM has to call you and tell you that you are overworking your pen...and he is a pencil necked geek who probably couldn't hit a wiffle ball, and you are a former All-Star catcher...get real. As for running...Martinez is weak behind the plate. They should have run all day long. Put the ball in play, make them make the plays to beat you. When the pitching gets better in the post-season, runs become harder to come by. It's different if he didn't have the tools. But he does. He should have been running with all of his players that can run. Abreu, Damon, Jeter, Arod. Running, or at least letting the other team you will, results in more fastballs, better counts, etc. Keeps you out of double plays, which, I believe the Yankees may have hit into one or two times that series. You don't run on the Tigers. However, teams with weak throwing catchers, which is pretty much the Guardians and the Red Sox, I would run all day on them. He doesn't utilize the tools he has. He sucks. -

I'm sorry, I didn't realize this was the first season he blew out his bullpen. My bad. Torre is as good a manager in baseball when it comes to the end of a game until the beginning of the next one. He deflects blame for his players, they love him, etc. As an X's and O's manager, he is lacking. He doesn't know when to run, when not to run, etc. He had one of the best base stealing teams in the AL against a weak catching duo in Cleveland. Damon, Jeter, Abreu, and Arod should have been track stars. He let them play station to station baseball. He burns out his bullpens faster than any manager in the history of baseball. I think an X's and O's guy that knows how to manage a pen is worth more. End of story. -
