  1. Mitchell throws some serious ched. Regardless, the f***up by Young cost us. edit: just saw your replies. Nevermind.
  2. Was listening to the call in the car. Sounded like Betts triple should have been caught. Is that true?
  3. It cost Miller a month and that is with him making one rehab appearance, plus he's a reliever. Buchholz is probably out 45 days or so as he wont throw at all for 2-3 weeks, will play catch/pen sessions for 1-2 weeks and then will need 2-3 rehab starts to get his arm up to starters stamina. You will probably see him come the end of August or beginning of September assuming no setbacks
  4. I guess the question becomes how long you'd want to hold onto him for. Remember, he has two options. Declining the option for next year allows him to walk. If he needed surgery and got it done in July, he theoretically could Be ready to return next August or so. So I guess the question is, how much does a year plus two months/playoffs of Buchholz cost? My assumption is that they'd decline the option as well, but the fact that they own two reasonably priced options might add a little wrinkle in there
  5. Too late now to deal him. If he needs TJS, a big question is whether they pick up the options or let him walk
  6. For buch, speculation abounds. A tear of the UCL can have many different times of presentation and a few different symptoms. Your partial tears usually aren't symptomatic until you rest and try to ramp up again. This is what happened with Tanaka. He struggled in two straight games then had tightness when he pitched his bullpen session. There was no prodrome of weakness for Buch, as from what I read, he abruptly lost his velocity in the inning he was replaced. That points more to an acute complete tear or a significant partial thickness tear if it's the UCL. Pitchers can have a lot of different pathologies in the elbow or presenting with elbow pain. Could be a flexor strain or ulnar neuritis as well. You don't know until he's MRI'd, but this doesn't look good for him, obviously. You even mention your elbow and you're usually down for a month as a pitcher even if you don't have anything wrong. Now I didn't watch the game, did he call the trainers out or did they notice something? Also, did he seem to grab the elbow after a pitch?
  7. I think we have a good shot tonight. We struggle vs lefties, so lining up ERod and Miley was smart on Farrell's part. Should be a good one tonight.
  8. Ortiz doesn't like it because he doesn't want to get hurt and allow his escalators to expire. He has a point, though. EEI had a stat, the last time Ortiz played first base 3 times in a week, he ended up on the DL
  9. Samardzija and Cueto are the jewels of the trade deadline. Cueto is the best pitcher obviously. He's gonna cost a ton mostly because Toronto, LA, NYY, Boston, Baltimore, and Chicago are in on him. My guess is he's going to Toronto, as I think they'll empty their farm for him for a shot at this thing this yr. I'm skeptical that the sox would deal the necessary pieces and be willing to pony up the 7yr $210 mil contract it'd take to keep him
  10. Tanaka was f***ing awesome today. He's got his stuff back and with a rest over the ASB, I expect a big second half.
  11. Holt is not a good choice. Bogaerts should make it without the dumb fan vote. He's definitely better than Escobar at this point in time.
  12. He'd be interesting to say the least. Not sure how his model translates on a macro scale since a lot of his reinforcements come from dealing off unsignable talent. If he could sign his talent and keep them in Boston let's say, how would he refill his pot? I honestly don't know, but it would certainly make for some good TV. I know he spurned a better offer from the sox, but a man can only turn down so much. If the sox triple or quadruple his salary and give him an ownership stake, lets say, I doubt he can look himself in the eye and not take that spot
  13. You don't know if he is a bust. But the guy did get in a couple of months last year, had a full ST and started the year out in the minors. It isn't like he jumped off the boat, threw on the jersey and took CF in Fenway. He has had his time. And he isn't 22 like Puig or younger with Iglesias. This is a man now who should be at his peak. He has shown regression rather than progression. Not too late to turn it on, of course, but I think this one might not have the brains to make it here.
  14. I was referencing more his lack of fundamentals. Like not telling a runner coming to the plate to slide when you're on deck. Like taking awful routes to balls in the OF. Like not being able to take a pitch at the plate or anticipate what a pitcher will throw. This isn't a 22 yr old rook. This guy is a 28 yr old vet from a good league in Cuba. These things shouldn't be new to him.
  15. I think this is the classic case of million dollar talent and ten cent head. And I know we've said this before about guys like Manny, but that guy was a student of the game, but came off as an idiot so he could do whatever he wanted and say he's Manny being Manny. This guy hasn't built the resume Manny did to get away with being an idiot or to intentionally be perceived as such. I think this guy is just an idiot. Doesn't do the small things most big leaguers need to do to become great. He also has incredibly poor instincts which makes it worse. The highway to stardom is littered with guys who had talent, but lacked the heart or the head. Rusney appears to be that kind of player
  16. UN, I am always wary about Beane's moves. He seems to always sell high on guys and asks for guys who have untapped and unseen potential. Same deal with Samardzija. He got him and Hammel last year because they were making a run, and went for it by dealing Russell. Well, he sends Samardzija away in the offseason and gets Semien, who looks like he could be a solid big league middle infielder (WAR of 1.5 this yr) and the unknown of the deal was Phegley, who is a playing very well with a .820OPS in 37 games and a 0.8WAR. All the while, Samardzija is on a 1 yr deal and his WAR is 1.3, a full 1.0WAR below the two big leaguers sent to Oakland. That doesn't include the 23 yr old 1b with huge OBP potential and some power potential in Ravelo who will be in AAA after his rehab assignment and the righty Bassitt who is now starting for the A's with Parker down and has had a solid start to his A's career. Beane doesn't look to deal a superstar and get a superstar in return. He looks to get guys who are average or better with the potential to be above average and he likes to accumulate a lot of those types. That allows him to fill a roster that looks on its face to be uninspiring, but always seems to have good Pythags and 7 times out of 10 contends in the west without any major financial outlay. His system works to have successful regular season teams.
  17. Beane gets panned for his Donaldson trade, but he got two big league pieces from the get go who have a WAR of 3.6 combined. Donaldson is at 4.3 this year, but he is 29 and the two big leaguers he got are 25 and 21. That doesn't take into account the lefty in AAA Nolin and the high upside 19 yr old SS in A+ ball who is hitting for some power at a young age. As it stands, Lawrie and Graveman for Donaldson is a good long term deal. If Nolin or Barreto turn into anything, this deal will end up as a steal, especially for a 29 yr old player who Beane hated
  18. Bogaerts gets in. Maybe Uehara. Other than that, I don't think anyone one gets in
  19. He'll take the calls. The thing with Beane is that he's gonna ask for something big and something weird. Be wary, he's right a lot about the weird acquisitions
  20. Everyone has their price, but the one floated for Gray is laughable. You'd have to move Betts and Bogaerts to get that kid. He's the goods and is likely going to torch in Tuesday night
  21. I think every Red Sox fan has seen Clay from day 1 as a guy with massive potential. You've seen the no-no, the sub 2 ERA from the first half of 2013 and the gritty performance in the WS later that year gutting through injury. But you've also seen season after season of unexplained injury or ineffectiveness derail what looked like a promising start. You say last year that he had reasonably good health, but basically sucked all year. Now, you've seen him rise from the ashes and pitch like an ace after a rocky start to the year. He's under control with reasonable options should he continue this level of performance. But he is finally worth something, actually quite a bit in trade and you're 7 out, 7 under prior to the ASG. So the question is, do you deal him this month and cash in while the value is high, or do you keep him and hope that he can continue this level of performance and health for the next 2 seasons?
  22. Cherington doesn't want to eat crow if Napoli moves on and regains his stroke. The most obvious move right now, though, is to DFA Napoli, move Hanley to 1b and fill the OF with guys who use the leather thing on their non throwing hands while in the OF, unlike Ramirez
  23. Absolutely. If Hanley moves to 1b and is a league average defender and continues to drop bombs, his signing will look better. If Porcello can keep the ball in the yard, his signing will look better. This sample is 80 games. Not a SSS anymore, but to this point 1/8th of a commitment to Hanley and 1/10th of The commitment to Porcello.
