  1. Paxton is a problem. 91-93 again
  2. Eovaldi’s issues have been both production and health. He’s had one fully healthy season and it was pre-Yankee days. He’s also a maddeningly inconsistent player even with his superior arsenal. Saying he is worth his contract is not accurate. But, saying you could dump his contract this year could very well be
  3. If the season ended today, the Sox and Rangers would be one game out of the POs in the loss column.
  4. You’ve got guys who can go multiple days in a week and guys who can go multiple innings in a day. There are few guys who can do multiple innings in a day multiple times per week. Brice is a two pitch pitcher, one who doesn’t have a strong track record. If your goal is to foster success and confidence, you try and keep him to what he knows, which is short duration. As a two pitch, short relief guy, he’s going to serve up some meatballs as he gets tired. That 2 seamer will lose depth, the slider will spin. And then, at that point, you’ll all be blaming Roenicke for leaving him in
  5. Here’s my argument. For 2020, over 50% of the teams will make the playoffs. With only 35 games in hand (for some teams) by the break, very few teams will be sellers. Eovaldi might be the top starter available on the market for 2020. That won’t be the case for 2021
  6. Disagree entirely. Because the longer he is in the sox employ, the higher the likelihood he gets hurt. He never makes it through a full season, ever. This is the one chance he has with the season being so short
  7. There is precedent for Song to get released after 2 years, then he can get 6 years of service after he retires.
  8. He is in a timing funk. Time to make an adjustment
  9. Like I said before, its only a 60 game season, so there wont be much separation. Over 50% of the teams make the playoffs. There will be VERY few sellers. If the sox want to sell an enigmatic and oft injured pitcher with 2 yrs and $34 mil still on the docket, this is likely their last chance
  10. Hey John, Don’t blow it up. Keep trying with this crew. I recommend you spend a lot this offseason, especially on pitchers over 30. You’re just a tweak or two away! Sincerely, The Talksox Resident Yankee fan
  11. If Eo throws like he has in his first two starts for the rest of this month, someone will go for him. With 16 of the 30 teams making the POs, there will be VERY few teams calling it quits. Also, Eo is known as a guy who can find it for a month and look like Roger Clemens. This actually might be the best chance you've had since you signed him to dump him
  12. Barnes has value, but last year he was exposed as someone who cannot close and also struggles on back to back assignments. This will limit his market to a degree
  13. It’s all about contractual control and cheap talent. When the talent becomes expensive, you have less to spend elsewhere. Also, when your team is horrendous, sometimes it’s best to have your core come up together in synchrony. Blowing it up isn’t a bad option for these Sox. The Sox pitching staff is in shambles. 2021 will be a wash regardless as ERod has no timetable. Sale wasn’t even a lock before TJS to be any good but now post TJS he won’t reach his new peak until later in the season assuming good health. Eovaldi is a mixed bag. If the Sox go out and sign Bauer or Stroman, good luck. You still have a rotation of one holdover in Eo, Bauer or Stroman, a stiff, and maybe ERod and maybe Sale with literally nothing behind it. Then, to make matters even better, ERod is a Fa after 21, you’ve got Beni and Vaz through 22 and Devers through 23. Your good core is going to get real expensive, which wouldn’t be a problem if the team was great right now. Prop open the window, stay good for as long as you can. But your team sucks right now and your core has 2-3 more years left before it either leaves or gets pricey
  14. Equating standard business ops and baseball is apples and oranges. In business, the business men and women gain experience and are at their earning potential and experience peak late 40s into their 60s. In baseball, the peak is about 5-7 years long from about 26-27 and ends around 32-33. Also, in business, beyond a brain injury, there’s little that could keep someone from being useful. In baseball, a single soft tissue injury can end a career.
  15. Cole is one hell of a pitcher, that’s for sure. Just made it look easy. Gio proving last year was no fluke. Baltimore somehow in second place, but they won’t last. 5 games up in the L column to the only divisional threat with 51 to go. Rain out today with a DHer tomorrow and a DHer Saturday. Going to need some of the kids to start. Should be fun
  16. Owners are still not going to be willing to spend to infinity. They’ll have a budget and there’s no way the rest of the owners will allow the chicanery of the early 2000s to go on again without a Lux tax. The point is, this is the “cliff” that I talked about. This is what DD does to teams. He builds them up and leaves the farm to burn. In this day and age, young players take the guaranteed money and don’t hit the market until contract #2 when they’re exiting prime. It’s not as easy as it used to be to get generational free agent talent. You’ve got to develop your core and spend to fill in. Your core beyond 3 players (Vaz, Bogey, and Devers) is pretty rotten with almost nothing on the mound. It’s far more difficult to get pitching on the market right now. If would be best for the Sox to move their stars and get young, top notch pitching and build that way
  17. 5GG, I think you are right. Same for the Dodgers and less so for the Cubs. MLB needs a LAD-NYY world series badly this year.
  18. Listen, I honestly hope they aren't blowing smoke. As a Yankee fan, I want the sox to avoid a full on rebuild. The timing of their farm with their team is completely out of sync. If the sox end up spending money to fix their issues, they'll be right back here needing to reset and with no titles in hand and likely still being a doormat. And they will be resetting when the Yanks reset, which means they wont take advantage of their window.
  19. Same deal with Vaz as with Devers. You've got Vaz for less time than Devers. Vaz also plays a position that ages faster than others. If you are expecting title contention in 21-22, then you gotta keep him. If you are expecting to rebuild in 21-22, then deal him off. By 2023, he could be cooked physically
  20. RR and Bloom need to find a way to fit him in when he is going to be most productive. He has the talent. His breaking ball is dirty and he still throws near 100. His issues are between his ears.
  21. The keys were handed to Bloom. Henry has influence, sure, but Bloom has the keys. Henry and Bloom need to sit down and assess the direction of the club. If they go full on rebuild with a pretty rough minor league system and a team that is full of broken down parts, then it would behoove them to deal off Devers and Bogey. There is no point in having 2 stars on your roster if your team finishes in the basement. It will also depend on how hard Henry wants to fight to keep Devers. Henry is the one who tried to sign Betts and he was not successful. You want a generational talent before through and unfortunately after prime, you have to pay them like one. Devers is a generational talent. He's a hitting master with power for days who will get better offensively. The issue you have with Devers that you didn't with Betts is that Devers has a very thick lower half and has the build of a guy who will get large long term and would end up at 1b. Do you want to bet on Devers as a 35-36-37 yr old being productive? Or will he turn into a Pujols or Cabrera? That is something they need to assess. Because the return for him would be enormous and if done correctly, could kick start the next dynasty. Remember, Bloom is okay with drafting, but is next level when it comes to dealing off All-Star talent.
  22. and if the Dodgers, Cubs and Yankees are all in prime position to make a title run and he cannot find a way to keep it going, he will be done as well
  23. ERod has a heart issue. He is not tradeable at the moment
  24. Well, the Sox biggest issue is their SP, but they handed a lead to their setup man. He had nobody on with 2 outs and gave up 3 runs. The roster construction for 2020 has been blatant in the tanking category. My bet is the spare parts on this team either get sold off if the season continues or shut down and rosters frozen if the season is locked
  25. If the season is completed, the Sox won’t need to suck for 162 games to get a top 10 pick.
