  1. When you are talking likelihood, though, they know they can count on Gaudin to be a #5 starter in the AL. Wang could be as good as a #2, but he could be continually injured or continuously sucky post-surgery. I think the Yankees will take the known quantity over the question
  2. http://twitter.com/JimBowdenIV/statuses/8007630187 Per Jerry Hairston, the Yankees didnt make him an offer because they've been waiting for Johnny Damon's price to drop. Well, it's dropping for sure, and I think this points to an eventual reunion in the Bronx. If this happens for lets say, 1yr $5mil then this lineup will be a f***ing juggernaut. Wow. I dont even know how I'd line it up. Jeter would lead off. Maybe they put Nick Johnson in the 2 hole for his OBP. Tex and ARod 3-4. Damon in the #5 hole, maybe? Posada in the 6 hole with Granderson, Swisher, and Cano rounding out the 9? That lineup would be absolutely devastating on pitchers. Absolutely devastating
  3. Its not like this is a secret. The sox do this to every player that leaves who isnt completely and totally done and who doesnt leave on good terms
  4. http://riveraveblues.com/2010/01/how-much-could-chad-gaudin-make-in-2010-22528/ This gives a good rundown. Looks like 3.5-4.0 mil is Gaudin's worth when you look at the other players on the list (Benoit doesnt count due to his extension) so 2.9 is definitely a savings, even though he doesnt project to be a 30 start pitcher
  5. Mo Vaughn, Nomar Garciaparra to name a few more.
  6. I am referring to Johnny Damon, Manny Ramirez, Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe, etc. Oh, and Schilling was reamed in the media for his biceps injury too.
  7. Also, does anyone find the timing of this to be too convenient for the Red Sox? Cmon now, this is EXACTLY what they always do when a player leaves. Tarnish him on the way out. "Hey, we got better in the ....... department and btw, the guy was (injured/a clubhouse cancer/a drunk/a womanizer)" This is EXACTLY how they've always operated.
  8. So he's capable of sucking ass? That is quite possibly the dumbest thing ever uttered.
  9. I don't think that is what he's worth, but a pitcher who puts up 150 innings in the bigs is worth something in this day and age. Plus, arbitration will compare him to other players with his kind of production. And right now, those guys are still getting paid at rates prior to 2009 when the economy wasnt as bad. 2008 wasnt that bad of a season either, especially in Oakland where he was a top notch reliever. And, if 2007 gets into the equation, he was very durable as a starter for Oakland. He is what he is, but in arbitration, he would have been able to command much more than he got. Think about it, Melky Cabrera commanded more than Gaudin did and Melky was 1 yr shorter in time and had a miserable 2008.
  10. Imperial, there is a reason for this. Its all based on BABIP. And strikeouts are not counted in it. If you assume that a pitcher with pitch to a .300BAA without any homer or K's then you get that FIP. I think BABIP is good at times, but overall, its flawed.
  11. Thats the thing, though. Papelbon wants to set the market for closers. For example, Jose Valverde has been one of the best closers in baseball over the past 2-3 seasons and he gets a 2 yr 14 mil deal. That's chump change for someone who dominates a rather important position. I think Paps wants to use Mariano's salary as a standard and try to set the market a bit higher.
  12. People are comparing Papelbon to Papelbon and not to the rest of the league. He was a top notch closer last yr, but he certainly wasnt as good as he had been in the past. Only after he walks will the sox feel the loss. Thinking that a guy like Bard can replace what Paps has meant to this team is foolish right now, but that seems to be the direction this is headed.
  13. Pena played well enough to be an option out there in a pinch. That's about it.
  14. Calero has an arm that is a ticking time bomb. Hence why he wasnt resigned. His MRI was laughable apparently.
  15. depends on what that "damage" was.
  16. The consistency of the offense and the developing consistency of the bullpen was the reason for our AL East title. Our offense continually gave us leads, and outside of April, when we handed those leads to the pen, we didnt give them up.
  17. Its always difficult to assess how a guy like Gonzalez is gonna move especially since he already took a hometowner once. That being said, guys who start getting some experience behind them but havent tasted success will crave it. If the Padres kids grow up a little next yr and the Pads are around the .500 range, then I bet they could get something done. If the Pads suck again, then I bet Adrian is beating his head against a wall trying to get out of there. My bet is that he never reaches FA due to a trade and a contract extension
  18. Adding Damon back to this lineup would make this one of the best lineups ever IMO
  19. Byrnes is all washed up. He's Rocco Baldelli in terms of injuries without the upside
  20. On anything more than a MiLB deal, it would be a waste of money
  21. 2.75 mil for Oki is a bargain
  22. Zumaya and Valverde in the back of that pen. If Zumaya could stay healthy, that'd be one hell of a 1-2 punch
  23. Blyleven, Morris, and Alomar all belong in the Hall. If Morris and Blyleven dont get in through the writers, they'll get in first shot from the veterans committee
