  1. ...leaving the Sox and then excelling elsewhere, while still getting paid in Boston? First Smoltz strikes out nine, and then Penny pitches his first 7+ inning start with the Giants http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090902&content_id=6757608&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb At least if the Sox face em, it won't be till the World Series
  2. Some players just take that risk. With a runner on second and less than 2 outs, fielders are taught to go to first base on a groundball to the right side, but sometimes a riskier throw to third base can nail the lead runner.
  3. Remorse already? Dang
  4. Best of luck to him.
  5. Lol, alright. "Sure is good to have versatile players on the Red Sox" It's a shame there's no opposite of a DH. You know like how the DH hits and doesn't field, it'd be great to have a position where Varitek fields but doesn't hit.
  6. I'm fine with the rotation they have right now with Varitek-Martinez-Youkilis-Lowell-Papi switching between C-1B-3B-DH. Sox are lucky to have so many versatile players.
  7. Smoltz dashed, plain and simple, but I wouldn't bash Lugo. Guy did his job well here, and even though his defense was subpar, he could hit - something that the Sox have had trouble with recently.
  8. Signed with the Cards today. Looks like he may be willing to join their bullpen.
  9. So what are the chances LaRoche comes back this offseason? Any at all?
  10. It looks like he is "finding the door" by leaving. If he refuses a trip to the minors, I guess the Sox have no other options for him.
  11. With Lowell, Gonzalez and Kotchman, the Sox are back to that iron-defense line up. Unfortunately, I don't think the Sox should try to be more like that 2006 line up.
  12. Anyone still wish Sox had LaRoche? I liked that guy and he showed power in his short stint with Boston.
  13. That's right. He usually pitched well for 3-4 innings and then gave up 6 home runs in a row. He could be good relief in limited use and not in really close games.
  14. To be fair, he did have one good start. He threw 4 innings and only gave up a run I believe, before the rain started. Can you imagine if it hadn't rained and Smoltz had pitched a quality start in one of his earlier outings? Things might be different. The whole thing is sad.
  15. He must not be as "pretty humbled" as he thinks if he's refusing to get things worked out against easier hitters.
  16. Wouldn't Tek have to hit below .200 for his defense to be considered unjustified for his poor hitting? And he does come in and get a timely hit here and there. A guy that strikes out three times when the Sox are up by 7 doesn't bother me as long as he can get on base in a close game.
  17. Good point. Sexson 6 games, reduced to 5 -charged mound -threw helmet -had a pitch thrown to him high and almost away (first pitch) -worth noting that he is a huge guy who could have caused serious injury Youkilis ? games -charged mound -threw helmet -hit the day before -evidence to suggest Porcello hit Youk on purpose, by also going in tight on Martinez -pennant race I'd be surprised if Youk got more than what Sexson got, given these circumstances.
  18. It's interesting that the best Red Sox lineup includes Nick Green - a solid player I'd say who would thrive in Triple A but at the end of the day is still hitting near the Mendoza line. This line up excludes Varitek who can be frustrating to watch at the plate but makes great calls behind it.
  19. Put two and two together. One obvious result of Youkilis' actions was Porcello being tossed - a "real reason" the Sox won. If Youk hadn't charged the mound, Porcello probably would have stayed in the game.
  20. Of course it's a real honor. Only 5 spots are open and you know 2 are going to Schilling and Beckett.
  21. lol. Interesting game-sharing idea, by the way. Very interesting
  22. Ugh that sucks. I had high hopes for Smoltz; even put him into my MVP Baseball 2005 line up (of course he was a different pitcher then). Best of luck to him
  23. I don't like the ones knocking the Guardians and Rockies. They deserve more respect, but all the other ones are classic!
  24. C's have way too many wing players and undersized forwards IMO. Trade for a 7 footer; don't get sucked into small ball
  25. Wally and Delonte!? I don't know...
