    I like the idea of relativity among positions, but I don't like that a terrible defensive catcher has a higher rating than a fantastic defensive 1B, for example (if I understand the range of ratings, which I'm not positive I do). And while the number would give one a general sense of a fielder's worth, I like the more specific ratings, such as range and arm, and I think they are even more important in determining value because they tell you strengths and weaknesses. It's more precise.

    To be fair, I think most fans get info on prospects from non biased (or as non biased as possible) sites like Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, etc, as opposed to straight from the team. Or at least I do.

    You mentioned arm and PB ratings. Are there more specific ratings for other positions (range, arm for infielders, etc)? Without knowing a lot about the system it seems like it would be a solid basic rating. How did they come up with the numbers?

    I have no doubt the Yankees will be willing and able to make a big splash next year. But as you said, two big contracts are coming off the books. I think the Sox will be able to at least make a run at a big FA. Long ways to go until then.

    Not thrilled about it, but if the Sox get Gonzalez I'd be much more enthusiastic. And my prediction: Bay to Seattle, Holliday back to St. Louis.

    I can absolutely see the Yankees signing Holliday, re-signing Damon, trading Gardner and using Melky as a 4th outfielder. Sign a guy like Sheets on top of that, that's a damn good offseason for NY. But in that scenario they could also just keep Gardner, pass on Holliday and wait for next offseason. If it's for two years as reported, I would say 7-8M per year.

    This is what I was thinking. It maximizes Hermida and Cameron's value in terms of splits.

    Interesting. Cameron has played nothing but CF since 2000 and he's a very good defender there, so it's hard to imagine him moving to LF. Could Ellsbury be moving to left? I'm honestly asking because this move confuses me.

    Not a huge fan of Uggla and Atkins instead of Gonzalez. Though, one must remember that it looks like we're holding on to Lowell.

    I'm not thrilled that its five years, but I'll take it. Lester, Beckett, Lackey is a great front three and potential playoff rotation.

    Agreed. Without knowing the prospects that the Mariners gave up (one of Saunders and Triunfel will probably go to Seattle), they are looking to be a real threat this year. If I'm the Mariners I'd rather it be Triunfel, unless they can get Bay, then Saunders is expendable.

    They really only have four guys under contract. Matsui, Damon and Nady are FAs, and I'd be shocked if Nady is resigned.
