Can momentum be generated by a momentous comeback? The Red Sox hope to get an affirmative answer Saturday night when they face the Tigers in the middle game of this three-game set.
The Sox were down to out No. 27 and down by a run Friday night when Kevin Youkilis smashed a game-winning two-run shot for the visitors.
"I don't know if it will set the tone," said Red Sox ace Curt Schilling. "We have to play [saturday]. That's a very, very good team over there."
Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield will try to be as effective in shutting down the dangerous Tigers as Schilling was on Friday.
Wakefield is coming off perhaps his strongest outing of the year, as he went eight shutout innings for a win over the Rays on Sunday.
The Red Sox are 2-2 on this 10-game road trip. After these next two against the Tigers, Boston will finish this journey with a four-game series at Yankee Stadium.
Pitching matchup
BOS: RHP Tim Wakefield (4-5, 4.07 ERA)
In his career against the Tigers, Wakefield is 13-8 with a 4.43 ERA. Over six starts in May, Wakefield went 3-2 with a 4.20 ERA.
DET: RHP Jeremy Bonderman (5-4, 4.61 ERA)
Bonderman allowed eight singles over 7 1/3 innings against the Yankees on Memorial Day, but those hits led to four runs in a 4-0 loss, dropping him to 1-4 at Comerica Park this season. He's 2-4 with a 6.25 ERA in six career starts against the Red Sox.
