  1. nice.....kind of illustrates how much better Rose was, no?
  2. true not likely he'll reach that level, not to take away from Jeter. oh, by the way....Rose was better than Jetes will ever be.
  3. what gives? no in-depth analysis of the injury? no diagnosis and detailed prognosis? you're letting some folks down, "Doc"
  4. wish this thread was about Vernon Wells
  5. One thing I noticed the last few games regarding Lowell....he makes a diving stop and the announcers ho-hum it...his D is so stellar its almost a give that he'll make a dynamite play and the annoucners are like "hard hit ground ball to Lowell's left...he dives....and makes the throw." That's it. At least with ARod this year there is some level of suspense...like will he make the routine play or not?
  6. thanks for clearing things up. i just read the same thing on Web MD
  7. I always find myself THINKING they don't have the ammo....and some how, some way, the Yankees come up with the ammo to make key deals that improve their club. never underestimate the Yankees and their ability to get these done.
  8. i can't stand Joe Nathan. that fukker gave it up to the Yanks a couple years ago in a horrible display of late inning relief. can't forgive him.
  9. For the record, as posted in USA Today: New York Yankees $ 194,663,079 Boston Red Sox $ 120,099,824 Los Angeles Angels $ 103,472,000 Chicago White Sox $ 102,750,667 New York Mets $ 101,084,963 Los Angeles Dodgers $ 98,447,187 Chicago Cubs $ 94,424,499 Houston Astros $ 92,551,503 Atlanta Braves $ 90,156,876 San Francisco Giants $ 90,056,419 St. Louis Cardinals $ 88,891,371 A $75m advantage over the next highest team, who enjoys only a $17m advantage over the third highest team. One thing that this doesn't capture is that once the Yanks sign the premier free agents, the rest of the teams bid up the remaining FAs...its supply and demand, and if you are not the biggest spender you're forced to overpay. Torre should have WS rings on his toes by now.
  10. hate to say I told you so, so I won't...well not exactly... BUT... I was on record (somewhere) as being extremely dissapointed in the Arroyo trade. Christ I'd like to have had the luxury of him being around....not that HE is a savior, but at least he'd throw friggin strikes, albeit with some HBPs. Ya can never have enough pitching...and as bad as Sox fans are bashing the Yanks staff, the Sox have holes too.
  11. I can see merit in both sides of the "bring up the kids" dilemma. There is another factor here, and it goes beyond what will happen to the individual pitcher and his psyche. The front office needs to be very careful that whatever they do with Lester or any other youngster on the farm doesn't diminish the players perceived value. A poor performance or two or three from a recent call-up sometimes is more damaging to the organization, in terms of diminished value, than the psyche of the pitcher.
  12. not at this point they won't mess, but I don't think anything is written in stone. Sox management will remain flexible and open-minded and use players as they see fit now and in the future...things change sometimes.
  13. thanks riv. on this one I agree with ya.
  14. Amen, brother. Amen.
  15. how much of the thread do you read before you post such nonsense? Its not a "who is better" thread. Its not a "bash Johnny" or "hooray for Youk" thread. I hadn't really thought about what we've lost, what we've gained, and how Johnny was doing versus whomever the Sox have had in the 1-hole. I think its a good discusison. The thread raised an interesting question...one which I would have thought a self-professed baseball guy like yourself would be interested in. But I guess I give you too much credit.
  16. instead of beaning Manny, Yankee fans should beat the tar out of the stiff that grooved him a fastball on 0-2 (was that the count?)
  17. Is he the next Mo? Is he on his way to being one of the best closers in the game? I dunno. I don't really care either. Ignore those who get caught up in the hype and label this kid the next Mo, or say he is better than Rivera, etc. From this Sox fans perspective, those kinds of comparisons are not only premature but totally unnecessary. I think more objective fans will look at it differently....Papelbon is performing extremely well and shows great promise. There is fan confidence in him when he is brought into key spots AND their is optimism regarding the fact that he is young and talented (and "cheap", salary wise) and a huge positive to the future of the Red Sox. When you get dragged into an argument regarding Paps vs. Mo, you AND your "opponent" are missing the point.
  18. I'd argue that a good portion of the run differential ( I know its only 7 runs) has to do with Damon's ability to steal and get into scoring position. translate that over an entire season (let's say Johnny ends up with 25-30 steals) and the impact of those steals would be more significant. Youk has performed admirably, but lacks that dimension. Ultimately he's better suited to hit lower in the order...problem is that if Gonzo is hitting behind him he'd see less quality pitches to hit.
  19. different times, different game. would Johnson or Young or Mathewson or anyone else stack up against these players...who are bigger, stronger, faster, have incredibl;e training routines and technology to boot? Or let's just go back to Koufax and Marichal and Gibson, and roll on to Palmer, Sutton, Seaver, Carlton....the game has changed a lot since THEY have been gone, too, who knows how they'd perform now.
  20. I think I've heard that Mussina is a prick. As for Bernie, did he not spurn the Sox a few years back when he was a FA...had the Sox bid up the price, then re-signed with the Yanks and said "I never intended to leave"...you may call it business but fck him.
  21. Empire: 1. It's Barbaro...not bararo. 2. You ain't funny. 3. Thanks in part to Barbaro's injury I hit the exacta, and had the winner to win and place. Despite MY good fortune, I'd gladly give it up if the horse would be ok. 4. You're a tool.
  22. our legion coach was mellow. hardly knew he was there, he let us play much more than our HS coach. It was nice to be able to swing at a first pitch in Legion, and you saw some kids who were "small-balling" it in HS actually get to show what they could do if the reigns were loosened. HS? Different story. Winningest coach in CT HS history, and why? Extremely talented teams that bunted and stole and ran fake bunts and ran fake steals, and ran suicide squeezes and this and that and took the first pitch and took on 1-0 and 2-0 and 3-1. Small ball at its best, but not always a fun way to play...when you know you can rip a kid and you're team is already up by 10 or so and you are bunting or taking? Frustrating. Miss a sign? he'd scream bloody murder and ask if you took stupid pills and say get off the field. saw more than one kid quit DURING a game, one stripping off the team jersey, throwing it at him and walking slowly across the field back to the school. Threw our starting 3B off the team the night before a quarterfinal game in the state tourney for missing Sunday 9:00 am practice the day after the prom...poor kid was told by a captain that a bunch of kids weren't going and he didn't need to either...then this kid was the only one not to show. The result? His replacement(s) booted one under the stands for a run or two, threw one over the 1B's head into the parking lot for another run, and couldn't hit to save their collective lives. Yes, I was very bitter after that game.
  23. that astounds me...pitching and 'D' win titles, no? how'd they only win one? funny game sometimes. Crunch...its getting close to that time of year...American Legion BB will be starting after the high school season. where kids play for the love of the game.
  24. this is very similar to saying ARod is the best all-around bb player in history...Roger is a number hanger. WHen the chips are down, there are a bunch of pitchers I'd rather have: Pedro Bob Gibson Steve Carlton even Smoltz Roger may have the best all-around resume in terms of numbers and longevity, but his performances in big games or versus top-notch pitchers of his era (i.e. Dave Stewart) will always fall short in my mind.
  25. And Clemens is a proven big game pitcher. Oh, wait, I meant big game choker.
