  1. too bad St Louis wouldn't do it
  2. its about the future when these moves are made, so a year over previous year comparison is not fair...the deal with Petey was his demand (12-13m per year) over 4-5 years had the Sox FO wondering what they'd have in year 3 and 4 with a sometimes fragile, primadona pitcher. oh and another thing. Let's not fall into the trap of believing Theo operates autonomously in that FO. Larry Lucchino has, and has always had, a big role in decision making for this organization. Remember Theo was off on sabbatical when the Sox landed Beckett and Lowell, despite Texas anteing up Hank Blalock (who doesn't make much, which was important to the Marlins) and their top pitching prospect. And I'll guarantee ya that the deal wasn't pulled off by the assistant GMs.
  3. yesterday (I think in a different thread) I mentioned how even Michael Kay called out Jeter and Torre, saying that someone needs to show some support for ARod. In that post I called into question Jeter's leadership as he sits by idly and lets ARod get abused, despite having supported Giambi and Knoblauch in their times of trouble. What I forgot, but was reminded of by today's Dan Patrick show, in which Dan called for Jeter to step up, was that Jeter showed support for Bonds not too long ago, saying he should be left alone and it he was beong treated unfairly. What gives? Is Jeter an ARod hater? Is he jealous of Arod's status as the former greatest all-around player? Od did ARod implore Jetes NOT to say anything on his behalf? I think this is a real possibility...given ARod's arrogance, perhaps he won't ask anyone for help...and given his $25m per year salary perhaps he feels like it would be demeaning to himself to accept such support. So what is it...is Jeter a bogus leader or is there something else going on? Whatever the case, the longer this situtation drags on the better.
  4. Wouldn't it true captain and teammate also speak up on behalf of ARod regarding his treatment by the fans? Michael Kay seems to think that Torre or Captain Intangibles should say something. Wasn't it Jeter who had Knoblauch's back when things were falling apart for him? Wasn't it Jeter who made comments to the press to try and take some heat of Giambi a while back? A captain...nay a true teammate...goes to bat for his compadres in order to help the team...Jeter's selectivity speaks volumes.
  5. (1) when it comes to best closer EVER there probably IS NO argument, so it makes sense not to go there. (2) I care about this season too....and while I'm totally impressed with what Papelbon has done, I want to see what he does in August and September and, more importantly, October. I think I know what the Yanks would get out of Rivera in the playoffs...I can't say the same for Paps until I see it.
  6. not so fast there...Theo will do whatever he can to better this team short-term and long-term...even if it means moving someone he really likes.
  7. regardless of his demeanor, it seems that he has decreased his nose picking which is definitely a positive. I wonder if he went to NPA (Nose Pickers Anonymous). Admitting you have a nose-picking problem is the first step...and now he seems to be on the road to recovery. good for him.
  8. lots of people do this...i was at Fenway and there were some folks from Ohio there...they were hitting a different park every day or two....Fenway, Shea, Yankee, Philly, Camden Yards, Pittsb, Cincy, Cleveland, and I think a couple in Chicago. It was actually a package they purchased. Fuk Miller and Skanks and Richie the 'C'...They'd never last 5 innings at a game with my friends, let alone travelling park to park...fkn fags.
  9. i think you can just about count on it. he'll have an agent who'll talk to him about marketing opportunities, the Yankees overwhelming financial advantage and the success that Matsui has had and it'll be a done deal. Of course they'll tease the Mariners, Sox, Angels to bid up his price...but I'd be surprised if he did NOT end up in pinstripes.
  10. ORS, good points, and I should heed some of this myself I suppose. I look at it this way...team loyalty is GENERALLY a product of geography. New Englanders tend to root for the Sox (although connecticut is split), those in the DC area are O's fans, those in Eastern Pa./West NJ might tend to be Phillies fans, etc. So that being established we now look at the citizens of various areas. There are a-holes in New England, there are A-holes in New York, there are a-holes in Cleveland, there are aholes everywhere. The more we live and get around the more we find that people are basically the same all over...in terms of sports, we see a melting pot of knowledgeable fans, jerks, overzealous individuals, those who could care less about their local team, etc.in every market. I know I have personally used to use the term "typical Yankee fan" to describe those "fans" that constantly throw the 26 WC in everyones face, that harp on the Bucky Dent s***, that make Buckner references. By my own admission and observations as described above I was painting all fans with one broad brush and that may be innapropriate on my part, as it is with 26 to 6's categorization of Red Sox Nation. Since I am not the type of fan responsible for negative labelling of Sox fans, I have no problem doing my part to avoid the broadbrush approach...in 26 to 6's case, given his recent posts, he IS personally a cause of labelling NY fans in negative ways, so I wouldn't expect the same restraint.
  11. you are right. it is irrelevant in the context of this thread.
  12. good idea. not. This thread should be deleted.
  13. Well clearly a screwball thrown by a righty pitcher tails inward to a right batter...this thing does the opposite. The passage above better describes the motion...the pitcher's arm moves away from his body meaning he is spinning the ball the same way as a slider, just with different arm motion. Not sure how hard you could throw it, though, with the arm flying out toward third base.
  14. The article states: "Ideally thrown, the gyroball should resemble a fat pitch, then take a sweeping turn away from a right-handed hitter. It's a slider on steroids, a cut fastball with science behind it, a testament to the aerodynamics of a baseball. " Matsuzka is a RIGHTY....if this pitch is delivered similarly to a screwball it would bend IN TOWARD a righty, not away from him. Am I missing something here or is this article a piece of s***?
  15. Please remove Buckner's name from the list. Without the guy the Sox never make it to the W.S. and his 'E' was made AFTER the BP had already blown the lead. As far as I'm concerned Buckner deserves the right to s*** on the face of anyone who claims he cost the Sox a WS title.
  16. whatever you do, please conclude your research project with acknowledgement that CURSES DON'T EXIST or your classmates will think your a tool, as is anyone that ever gave credence to such a ridiculous story.
  17. I see the B's hired Marc Habscheid as an "associate" coach... This guy was selected by Hockey Canada to coach the national team, has been involved in numerous developmental programs, and reportedly is very good working with young players. My hope is that his knowledge of the young talent in Canada could assist identifying potential acquisitions...I know that's not a coaches role typically, but if the knowledge base is there, hopefully it can be tapped. He's also worked with Lewis in the past which I think is a positive.
  18. Samsonov in Montreal is a non-issue to the B's. First because the B's have their own problems to contend with and a lot of work ahead if they're going to become competetive. Second because Samsonov is flashy but is not a finisher. To the Habs fans, I say watch Sammy trip over the blue line or face-off dot time and time again. He's not a big impact player.
  19. playoffs are an entirely different story...PLUS if I recall someone in the league's front office issued a warning against retaliation. again, not saying it was illegal, just sayin he saw Umberger was vulnerable and threw a vicious hit...if Umberger sees him coming, and Campbell realizes it, Campbell pulls up. So I choose not to revel in Campbell's hit as if it is some tremendous accomplishment.
  20. I heard a rumor about the cause of the tension. Supposedly Kay is very upset because Leiter and he had been sexually involved, but Leiter wants Susan Waldman to join them in a three-way and Kay is hurt by this. Apparently Leiter argued "it would be great to have 3 guys like you, me and Susan together for a roll in the hay" but Kay was taken back because he's got second-hand knowledge that Susan's dick is bigger than his so he feels threatened.
  21. and I think Tito does this wherever possible...but there have been cases where the pen is taxed and he has to go with someone else on the roster...again, I reiterate, Tito has use of the guys that the FO puts on the roster...and there are times Rudy is gonna have to pitch, sometimes when it matters, because you can't burn out the rest of the pen to avoid Rudy. Until he is replaced, I'm afraid there is a chance...one that Tito will avoid when possible...that Seanez will be used and will cost the team. Fact of life right now.
  22. (1) Didn't ask for hitting to be taken out of the game. Said I love the physical play. (2) Didn't call the hit cheap or illegal...said I don't enjoy, as some do, a player taking advantage of a player in such a way as to injure him (3) the last shot on the clip, from behind, shows Unbergers head snapping violently back, way before hitting the ice...he was out before he hit...notice he could do nothing to cushion his fall, which any player with his wits automatically does? (4) It was RJ's fault? ok, it was his fault, now he can go out an play like a Bruin and let the puck go in order to protect himself. (5) The Flyers absolutely MUST drill Campbell.
  23. scott stevens used to throw that type of a hit all the time and send guys out with concussions....it would always be a "legal" hit but would also always involve a guy with his head down, unaware, and a DELIBERATE shoulder to the HEAD. I'm a huge hockey fan and I love the physical play and really used to love the fighting when it was more a part of the game. But I've never gotten a thrill out of a guy lining up an unsuspecting player for a "clean" hit that is clearly intended to really take someone out. I see this in lacrosse too, with players who hardly ever initiate contact waiting till someone is vulnerable...even if it has no impact on the play...and deliver the hit designed to injure. Some football DB's are like that too...one on one they'll roll into the guys knees but if he's in the air or coming across the middle and can't see him coming they'll take his head off. Yes intimidation is part of the game and these sort of hits are considered within the rules. I'm ok with it...as long as the player who delivers the hit understands that the victims teammates have a right to exact revenge. If I'm the Flyers coach, Campbell is going to get drilled every single team he steps on the ice against us in '06-07.
  24. easy there, fella. we're not saying you are gay. just you admiration of Jetes suit came across a bit weird is all.
