You don't have to be an absolute stud pitcher to have a major role on a staff...you need to eat innings and give your team an opportunity to win. Arroyo does that.

on the surface...easier to be a Yanks fan, as those who can count as high as 26 can throw around their "26-6" comments and such....but... I have a hunch that buried beneath their proud exterior burn issues that are masked by their allegiance to baseball's richest team and that the truth is front-running somehow dorsn't compensate for these issues...so... in the end its easier to be a Sox fan, not because of the Sox themselves, just because the fact that Sox fans are true, are better balanced and more comfortable in their skin and this is why they were able to grow attached to a TEAM...rather than an ICON.

way early to speculate who lands where, but on ESPN one of the "experts" (Olney or one of those guys) was interviewed and indicated the Yankees would be attempting to get BOTH Zito AND Schmidt. wouldn't surprise me in the least of that was their goal.

While I don't go for the taunting of yankee fans by Sox fans, whether the Sox make the playoffs or not, I don't necessarily think all comments made here can be considered "taunting"...for example, saying that the Yankees choked may not be entirely accurate, but it is not taunting. They were outpitched and outhit by a team of hungry, agressive, determined ballplayers...but when you boast a lineup like such as the one the Yankees purchased this year, you must be held accountable. So maybe its a matter of semantics...but the bottom line is that a team with that much talent MUST win...as Steinbrenner said, this result is unacceptable. On the other side of the coin, certain Yankee fans' reactions to all this are equally if not more disturbing. I was at a restaurant Friday night and after dinner we sat in the bar for a drink...the Yanks were on on the TV across the way...I walked over to see the score, saw it was 5-0 and said to a friend at the bar "Did anyone see this coming". A Yankee "fan" says to me "are you a Yankee fan" and I said "no". He says "Red Sox?" and I say "YES". He says "sorry to hear that" then proceeds to tell me that the Sox are sitting home watching on TV and at least the Yankees made the playoffs and Schilling is a loudmouth and says "you Red Sox fans are a joke". I just broke out laughing and said "what did I do to deserve this...look at the score." The best part is everyone in the place laughed at the guy too, and he left in a huff. So I say to that segment of the Yankee "fan base" I realize you don't represent all Yankee fans, but relax, because some folks do make generalizations, and you're the ones making your fan base look like a bunch of priviledged, spoiled, obnoxious brats.

Manny is a MUCH better hitter than Andruw Jones...while AJ would give Papi some support, it would not match the respect given to Manny by opposing pitchers.

Am I serious? well, only half-serious. What I'm trying to say is I would trust no one in MLB to be drug-free....no one at all.....because with the dollars at stake, with the egos involved, I can't be sure about anyone. And I won't fall into the trap of looking only at body types or muscle definition because different bodies respond differently to use. The reaction to throwing Jeter's name in the mix is exactly what I would have expected. Jetes couldn't possibly do such a thing, right? Like I say, I trust none of 'em.

i think the drug use is so rampant it'd crush the sport if a full accounting of users were possible. Look at the ESPN report regarding the Carolina Panthers, stating guys were taking alarming levels of performance enhancing drugs in the season before their super-bowl appearance. The Sox non-signing of Petey at time sounded like the proper move to me...now I think its becoming more evident that his future is cloudy...but likely includes many a DL trip....not becoming of $13m year pitchers, IMO. I'll concur with Crunchy, though, on the fact that for about a 5 year period, I personally have never seen a more dominant pitcher in my life....unless I count limited TV viewing, specifically replays of the 1967 and 1968 world series where Bob Gibson absolutely looked like a man pitching against high-schoolers....I'd say that was about equally dominating.
