People are saying our offense is going to be real weak if we lose Manny, and that is true, but if we can make up the runs we would lose in other areas (namely pitching and defense) then the loss of Manny would be significantly less. Besides, if we sign Drew and deal Manny, and find someway to acquire Lugo, then the lineup would be: Lugo Youks Ortiz Drew WMP Tek Lowell Crisp Pedroia Which is essentially the same lineup everyone is counting on if we trade Manny anyway. We get a decent bench infielder in Betancourt, and Putz would be the closer we need. Maybe they can throw in their Soriano in the pen to sweeten the deal. If we have to part with one of our mid-level prospects to get that deal done, or to throw in some cash, why wouldn't the Sox highly consider it?

Putz was a STUD last year and it'd be interesting if the Sox pursue him. Manny for Putz/Betancourt/???? Betancourt is a pretty solid defensive infielder.

I'm also fairly sure that if the Marlins wanted to move Willis, they could probably get a better package than Melky, Proctor, Sanchez and Duncan. Melky is about an average outfielder, with little power but skills in other areas. Proctor they may go for, only because they need some bullpen help. I'll be honest when I say that I don't know much about Sanchez, and what I've heard from Duncan is he's been sliding down the Yankees prospect list the last few years. Like ORS said a couple of posts ago, it might benefit them to go for quality of young talent over quantity. If the Yankees made an offer of Hughes/Proctor for Willis, then I think the Fish do that deal.

But you're banking on the fact that Hughes becomes something similar to what Willis already is.

See ORS's post, and start using statistics that don't suck. BA, RBI....these are f***ing terrible measures of a player's offensive worth. WHEN JD DREW IS HEALTHY....he is far and away a better offensive player, which is what I said in my OP.

First of all, when pitchers like Jamie Walker get deals like 3 yrs/$12 million, this deal is excellent. Very low risk, decent reward. At the very least he will help ease Matsuzaka's transition into Boston. Second, with the Sox offering Trot arb, it looks more and more like Manny is on his way out. That's where the new closer is going to come from, and hopefully the SS too. -
The Red Sox are idiots for offering him arbitration. Looks more and more like Manny's on the way out. Idiots.

I'd like to see Wang pull off a couple more decent season before we start calling him a "top tier pitcher" He's good. But he's not there yet.

Career chump? When healthy (blah blah blah) Drew is an excellent offensive player. Better than Trot. Better than Damon.

Peavy had a down year last year, but he's a stud and cost controlled for another few years. If you get Peavy for Manny, you might get a mid-level prospect with it. Dreams of getting Linebrink or Gonzalez would mean the Sox would have to part with prospects (or $$$) of their own.

Yeah, Tex is good but that's not close to equal return for the Sox. WMP would most likely patrol LF, but anyone else think Coco should be there and WMP in center?
