  1. The problem with using run prevention as a strategy for team building is that all of the moving parts need to be going in the same direction for it to be successful. There cannot be a weak link in the chain. Unfortunately, we have seen that with Lester s***ing the bed, Scutaro booting a few, Ellsbuy hurting his ribs and Cameron getting kidney stones. The philosophical issue i have with it is that it is largely unproven way to build a team. Even the most die-hard sabermetricians cannot agree with each other on the true value of defense. It is not like OBP, OPS, or eQA where they are all formula based and objective. A lot of defensive statistics are still very subjective. Building a team around these stats seems risky and foolish.
  2. How can you honestly say there isn't a drop off between he two since 3homas has been pulled more than 5 times since Jan 1? How can you say that and honestly believe it? Do you dispute the fact this team plays better in front of Rask?
  3. NWIH do I want Dye anywhere near this team. He fell off a cliff ofensively last year and I believe has regressed badly in the 2nd half the last 3.
  4. Props to Y228 as he makes a whole hell of a lot of sense in this thread. Those who are painting the "Boston never had a chance" picture are simply putting blinders on to the whole situation. The Sox had a face to face meeting with Boaras and Tex and could not close the deal. For people who pride themselves on being awesome salespeople, it's a pretty glaring failure.
  5. So, Dojji, should they start Thomas in Game 4? I mean, optimal roster construction and all that. Don't want Rask to be too tired before the games really start to get important.
  6. absolutely correct. why couldn't the Sox have offered more to Tex? they found 82.5 million to give to Lackey and another ~80 for Beckett. They probably could have gone that extra mile for Tex and for some reason could not close the deal. and it has and will continue to cost them.
  7. If this team is 8+ out by the break, then I hope like hell Theo DOESN'T go after Gonzalez. Deep down I think he knew this season was going to be a struggle, and I give him credit for putting together a staff that should be able to keep them competitive in a lot of games. The bullpen is still a major question mark and unfortunately the offense isn't good enough to hang with the Rays or Yanks. Any other division, I think the Sox probably win it. Now I am having a hard time seeing this team playing postseason baseball.
  8. And I hate to continue to beat the dead horse, but this is exactly why landing Teixeira was so vital and critical, and why it is a huge failure on this FO that they did not get him. And as I type, another shitshow at Fenway today. Is this team 10 games out by Memorial Day? Will people go watch a team with a 150 million dollar payroll flounder below .500? Go ask the Mets how that's working.
  9. That was a pretty weak effort Gom. Not your best. Man, did Manny and Ortiz cover a lot of sins.
  10. Reddick, Kalish, Kelly, Lin, etc. Ortiz, Lowell, etc. off the payroll.
  11. This team just is not fun to watch, at all. The halmark of bad teams is that when they pitch, they don't hit and when they hot, they don't pitch. I hesitate to overreact, but BPEF made an excellent point of how if run prevention is going to work as a strategy for team building, all the parts need to be working together. Have not seen that yet. I wonder if Theo really believes in run prevention. Bill James once said that defense accounts for less than 10% of a team's value. I wonder what changed? Not saying their methods could not have found something new, but I'd like to know what it is. And to those who are so sure Epstein will go out and improve the team, remember 2006 and his "price of milk" speech. Keep in mind this was supposed to be the bridge year. I do not expect anything major from Epstein at any point. Those pining for Gonzalez are going to be disappointed, IMO.
  12. Dojji, are you f***ing serious trying to advocate starting Thomas over Rask in game 3 over at HF? I mean, seriously? Advocating for a guy who has been pulled like 7 times since Jan 1, with one of those times being AGAINST BUFFALO? What the hell are you thinking?
  13. The Oilers are making two picks, theirs and ours. If Chia takes Fowler he should be drawn and quartered.
  14. In all honesty I am going to be stoked with womever they pick. Edmonton will pick one of those two and if the Bruins pick 2nd, they will pick the other. The debate comes if (a) the Bruinss win the lottery or if ( the (ilers take Fowler. ( will not happen so pray for the ping pong balls...
  15. Bruins are about 19% to get the #1 pick. 60.68 to get one of the top two.
  16. I could not disagree more about those pining for Seguin. Hall is the choice. He's not like Kessel who won't go in the corners to battle for the puck. Next Tuesday is the biggest sporting event in Boston no one is talking about.
  17. I rank them: Hall Seguin/Fowler I think Hall is on another plane than the other two and the only one who can have an immediate impact next season. If by some miracle he is there, they have to take him.
  18. Welcome to Boston Cam Fowler, Taylor Hall, or Tyler Seguin!
  19. Two U's, two K's, two points.
  20. How can you call Tim Thomas a tandem goaltender when he's been pulled 5 times in his last 18 games?
  21. I agree. There is no point in starting a $4 million goalie who has been pulled 5 times in 18 starts since Jan 1. Why bother defend the guy anymore?
  22. Claude punted the game. I won't be sad if he is let go after thisseason is over. His system has been figured out and his in game adjustments (or lack thereof) are killing this team. Why Thomas sees any time at al is mind boggling.
  23. Rask and Thomas do not "share" anything. Rask has been the #e for going on two months now. This team simply plays better in front of Rask and heis the only reason they would have a chance at stealing a playoff series. The bigger question resulting from the Ference signing is how they can sign Seidenberg AND Stuart AND the Pick AND another forward for scoring depth (be it Colborne or someone else). It's going to be a s***** offseason if we can't unload Chiarelli's dead weight (and there is a LOT of it) and lose one of those guys.
