  1. Linebrink will have help in the Yankees pen and won't be relied upon to pitch every day as he is in SD. His decline late last season could simply be a result of overuse. I like his stuff and the Yankees are not the only team that have inquired about his services. He is well sought after. Of all the pitchers mentioned by both AZ and SD, he is the most proven commodity.
  2. I like the Padres deal better if what is being reported is true. To add some icing, how about the Padres throw in Bard to be the heir apparent to Posada.
  3. I hear ya Sean, they are all scrambling today and will probably be calling for Charlie Weiss' head on a silver platter later today. Do you think Lou Holtz had a "gut feeling" about the direction the program was going when he left? I'll be happy to post that stat in the other arena, which one though? PM me the answer. We have been members of several arenas over the last few years.
  4. No surprise last night! ND is 0-16 against teams finishing in the top 10, since Lou Holtz departed the golden dome.
  5. "The last thing you want is an albatross of a contract to a bloated superstar like Sammy Sosa or Jason Giambi, only to have those players collapse on you when their either dislocate their arm trying to run out of the batter's box or have to give up the roids and get all depressed and s***. If a 130 game JD drew can get 28 HR, 95 RBI and a .400 OBP" While I can agree that Boston has addressed several of their "holes" this off-season with the best players available for those positions, your classification of Giambi as a bloated superstar with an albatross contract is unfounded. If Drew can get 28 HR (has only happened once in his career), 95 RBI (has only happened once in his career) and have a .400 OBP (very likely)........ Giambi on the other hand 28 HR (seven times), 95 RBI (seven times), .400 OBP (seven times)
  6. No argument there. Again, I root for the name on the front of the jersey, not the folks in the FO.
  7. Agreed Sean, but I like the "new" strategy by Cashman. In building for the future they may be sacrificing the near term, but, with that offense I don't think you can really count them out in 07. Plus, they have some major league ready arms in AAA right now. Their effectiveness in the show has yet to be proven, but you could say the same about the Tigers young staff last year.
  8. Maybe, just maybe what Cashman has been stating all Winter is true. He is building a stable of young pitchers for the future. I have no problem with that. Seems to me the last time the Yankees were serious about building from within, they went on a pretty good run of WS championships. Good strategy, RJ is useless after 2007 (maybe before depending on his back), Mussina is getting close to retirement and Pettite is a question mark after 2007 ( he wasn't even sure he would pitch in 2007). With the price of pitchers this off-season it's a much better bet to build your own replacements than have to deal on the FA market next Winter.
  9. Here's a link to the latest on the RJ dealings. Appears the Zito signing has nothing to do with moving RJ. http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/484122p-407473c.html
  10. I don't know that the Johnson trade was contingent on signing Zito. I believe that was all speculation on the part of some scribes.
  11. Brian Sabean has lost his f***ing mind!!!! Who's next Barry Manilow. Sabean seems to be driven to highly overpay guys named Barry this off-season. Good luck Brian, half your team is old enough to be Zito's father.
  12. Adam, I understand your frustration with the Matsuzaka negotiations, but here's another point of view. Boras is doing what he has traditionally done, get the most that he can for his clients, that's his job. MLB has no business stepping in to get a deal done, they are the ones who agreed to the posting process with the Japanese Baseball league. The message I see being sent to Japan if a deal can't be reached is this, the Seibu Lions ownership are a bunch of greedy SOB's who deserve to not get a dime. They accepted the ridiculous $51M compensation bid for a guy who is supposedly the best pitcher in Japan that they paid only $2.5M in salary to last year. The bid money affords them the opportunity to bring in 25 more Matsuzaka's. That's greedy!
  13. Here's a link to Masseroti's lastest ramblings in the Herald: http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=171788&srvc=home I agree that teams need to start standing firm with Boras clients, but what Masseroti seems to be overlooking is, the Sox caved in to him when they gave Drew $14M per year contract with no other bidders. You can't overpay for one client and then expect to low ball the next client. They set the precedent themselves, now Boras is going to hold them to it. If Gil Meche can get $11M per year from the cellar dwelling Royals then Matsuzaka is surely worth that and more when you expect him to compete in the A.L. East. Also, stop referring to the $51M auction as part of salary considerations. Granted it figures in the overall investment, but it is totally separate from salary. Matsuzaka does not get the $51M.
  14. The Sox, Yankees and Mets set the value for Boras when they made their ridiculous bids for the right to negotiate with Matsuzaka. Boras' stand has only been reinforced with the dollars that Drew, Meche, Matthews, Jr., Pettite and many others are receiving this off-season.
  15. The drama that is Boras. If he wasn't going to sign a "last minute" deal there would have been no reason for Matsuzaka to travel to the U.S. on Saturday. Boras is stating that he is a $100M player and Theo does not disagree, however, the sticking point seems to be that Theo believes the $51M posting fee should be considered as part of that $100M, Boras disagrees.
  16. If Boras takes less than what he has stated is fair value for Matsuzaka he risks a lot. The latest estimates for Zito are $100M plus, he already convinced Boston to spend $14M per year on Drew. Boras is in the drivers seat, he knows Boston will pay now or someone else will in two years. Boras is the biggest snake ever in pro sports and I cannot recall a single deal where he did not get exactly what he wanted. This deal with Matsuzaka will happen IMHO, but at a price that Boston will not be very happy with. Theo needs to stop including the $51M in the rationale for Boston's offer. It has nothing to do with the contract.
  17. When did Steinbrenner start influencing Theo's decisions? Drew is a very capable player, but not worth the $14M per they are giving him. Did he get another opt out clause in this contract? He's a merc, more the type of player that George would have signed in NY than Theo in Boston. I think the tide has shifted in ridiculous spending from NY to Boston. Ha, Ha, oops, time to change pants again
  18. Another scenario in the Matsuzaka drama could see the Sox not being able to agree to terms with him and Boras "buying" his free agency from the Seibu Lions. Seibu stands to get $51M if Matsuzaka is signed. They will get nothing if he is not signed and leaves in two years as a free agent. Boras is not stupid, he knows this and the Seibu ownership might be willing to take some $ millions now to grant him free agency instead of $0 in two years. Just something else to think about.
  19. For me the issue is not whether the $51M counts toward the luxury tax or not. The issue is what the $51M represents to the smaller market teams in MLB. For years we have constantly heard that the Yankees and their free spending ways were bad for baseball. They established and unfair advantage because of their wealth and how they chose to spend it. This $51M for negotiating rights, IMHO, will have the same effect. So, depending on which side of the "free spending" fence you sit on, opens new arguments on whether this process is good or bad for the small market teams.
  20. Ten bucks says the one sixth place vote for Jeter came from a writer in Boston
  21. Money well spent by the Jays when you consider teams are considering J.D. "DL" Drew at $12M or more per year.
  22. Offensively, there's really no difference from last season. They still need a frontline pitcher for the rotation, but with only Zito and Schmidt available on the FA market, it doesn't bode well for Cashman right now. I would hate to see him package up some of those young pitchers for a starter, but he may not have a choice in a few weeks.

  24. Cashman quiet? He has dumped Sheffield and his $13M and attitude. Sheffield was not a factor last year and the Yanks still won the division, no great loss there. Getting rid of Wright should save a few hundred innings of bullpen work this coming year and the three young pitchers he received from the Tigers are good prospects, something the Yankees need in the future.
