  1. Like I said maybe Nieves is drinking or maybe he slept with Henry's girlfriend, or maybe the obvious is the truth-- he was a sacrificial lamb. If Nieves was the problem, why have they cleaned out Mujica and Varvaro also. Are they drinking too.
  2. Whatever, you say Kimmi. There have been many 4 year contracts in the last several year and none have gotten an AAV of $20 million plus. Your argument is a rationalization of a fact.
  3. The pitching staff has the worst ERA in baseball. The pitching coach is the same pitching coach that was in place when the 2013 staff got off to a very hot start. Do the math. You are a math teacher. This is a desperation move by the organization which has realized that it has built a very shaky staff. Of course there is a possibility that Nievees has taken to the bottle. This pitching staff has increased my alcohol consumption. Am I understanding correctly that you oppose this management decision?
  4. I just stated some facts which people have been trying their darndest to refute, but they have been unsuccessful. Why all the effort if the facts are pointless. Sounds like surrender.
  5. Don't argue with me. The reactionary FO made these moves firing Nieves and cutting Mujica.
  6. None of this changes the facts that I stated.
  7. Bells, I am not anti this deal. I was surprised that they gave him the deal so early and I am surprised that Ben set a new market level. He has not done that during his tenure. I have repeated this over and over. I am not anti the Porcello deal. That is what you think I am. IMOn he is the only positive that this staff has going for it. Don't you remember that I have wagered a case of beer that Porcello will have an ERA under 4? Would I do that if I was anti the Porcello deal?
  8. FO being very reactionary. . Luckily they don't post in our game threads. What a whiney bunch they sound like! LOL!
  9. You have been following the progress of the minor league pitchers more closely than I have been following them. I agree that the better performers should be promoted.
  10. It does give the agents for pitchers a target to use in negotiations.
  11. A. I have not ignored the shorter term of years, but that doesn't lower the AAV to below $20 per year. No other #2 is getting that over a contract of a similar length. B. 2014 was his best season in a 6 year career. He would have to improve on his career numbers to earn this contract.
  12. I am not arguing whether it will be a good deal or not. I have merely staed two facts about the deal. Whether the deal turns out to be a good value is a fact yet to be determined.
  13. A discussion with him is considered whining if you disagree with him. He is always obnoxious and belligerant.
  14. My logic is terrible? I have made two points that people have railed against, but have yet to put a dent in, because they are fact: 1. The Red Sox have established a new market rate for #2/3 starters by paying Porcello an AAV of $20 million on a long term contract. 2. Porcello has been a #3 or worse on his team every season. He pitched better than a #3 only in one year of his 6 year career. He will have to improve his performance to validiate his current contract.
  15. I greatly enjoyed 2013. The season was like a dream from beginning to end and it was topped off by my greatest sports experience of my lifetime -- being at Fenway Park for game 6 of the World Series. However, no business can tolerate spending as much money as the Red Sox do if they come in last place in 3 out of 4 seasons. Yes, that is premature for this season, but they can't let this spiral toward the drain again.
  16. I am glad that ownership is not just sitting around saying that it is still early. It is early, but this team is very poorly constructed. It has some very bad flaws that will not correct themselves. Masterson is not going to wake up tomorrow and find the 4 MPH that he lost on his fastball last year that caused him to be the 5+ ERA pitcher that he was last year and that he will continue to be this year. He needs to go to the pen or get cut. The jury is no longer out on him. He didn't regain what he lost last year, and there have been no signs of it coming back. They should move him out of the rotation immediately. Buch should get to the end of May to find himself. We are stuck with Miley for 3 years. Give Kelly until the end of June to get his stuff together and then send him to the bullpen. Give Barnes the first shot and then Johnson.
  17. I am being facetious, but the difference in philosophy just boiled down to getting guys out versus not getting them out.
  18. I fCherington manages to finish last in 3 of 4 seasons, he will get fired regardless of the Championship.
  19. Because the other 4 guys are a pair of 4's and a pair of 5's.
  20. Palmer was a headcase that they have said that only Weaver could motivate. In those years, Weaver always tapped Cuellar and McNally before going to Palmer. It was an unbelievable staff, although Gibson and Carlton were a pretty good tandem. So were Marichal and Gaylord Perry ,and McClain and Lolich and Seaver, Koosman, Gentry and Ryan weren't bad either.
  21. And you were wrong about McNally. He was clearly the #1 or #2 on that team as Porcello was clearly the #3 on the Tigers. Rotation and adjustment for team aside. I acknowledged that there was merit that his results were better than a #3 in 2014, but he didn't pitch better than a #3 in his other 5 full seasons, no matter what rotation he was in. Here's my post again, and I will stand by it as fact after these many days of debate and research: http://www.talksox.com/forum/threads/17131-Is-the-actual-rotation-the-worst-in-the-last-10-Y?p=952922&viewfull=1#post952922
  22. McNally was usually their opening day starter and in the post season, Weaver went to McNally in either game 1 or game 2 to start the post season. Cuellar and McNally were Weaver's money guys despite his mancrush on Palmer. Dobson was a one year wonder and he was the clear # 4 on that staff. To answer CP's question to SK, Porcello is not even as good as Tom Phoebus from their 1969 club. Didn't he no-hit us in the 60's -- maybe '67?
  23. He wasn't their #4 starter. McNally was their #1, possibly their #2. Did you watch those Oriole teams?
  24. You have already agreed with me on this. Proving that another GM almost gave away as big of on AAV to another #2/3 pitcher doesn't change the fact that it is only "almost" as big. Will the Porcello deal turn out right where the Bailey contract blew up in the GM's face? We will have to let it play out. It couldn't go worse than the Bailey deal. Keep in mind that although Porcello is young, he has already put a lot of miles on his arm. He has been taking the ball every 5th day for 6 years. I think that needs to be factored in.
