  1. This should be the thread of the year. It was maligned as a trolling effort and a lot of posters went pretty hard at iortiz for starting the thread, but now it is obvious that this was an issue that merited serious discussion from day 1. Iortiz had the foresight to see what was coming. His attackers were the trolls.
  2. He is defeated. He is on his way to finishing last 3 out of 4 seasons. No GM has done that since before Yawkey bought the team.
  3. From Lauber's in today's Herald:
  4. Until recently, I would have waited until the offseason to clean house in the FO. I have changed my mind. This organization is in such disarray that they should start the process immediately. Clean house of the current collection of clueless bastards and start assembling a new team immediately so that they can start familiarizing themselves with the organization and its needs before the season ends. Hopefully, this would allow them to develop a good strategy that could be put in place as soon as the offseason starts. It would allow them to hit the ground running. There is no reason to wait. Giving Cherrington the job was a terrible mistake. He is the common denominator to the 3 last place teams. We can no longer blame Theo's spending or Bobby V or Larry L. Ben is the reason. He has to go.
  5. He's done except for some rehab and maybe a token start or so on September, but they will declare him healthy and hopes will be high for him in 2016.... and if we are lucky, we will get a good solid half season out of him.
  6. The organization is going to have to get over its aversion and fear of the back end of these big pitcher contracts. Unless they can fleece some team in a trade like the Pedro trade years ago, they will need to acquire some one for big $. We don't have enough top quality arms in the organization at this point. It is not like they have been so shrewd with their shorter term contracts. Flushing $82 million down the toilet on Porcello is not chump change. It doesn't fall into the "low risk high reward" category. We would have been much better off signing Shields or just about any of the other FA pitchers available last off season.
  7. yep. Thanks! And he was probably better than 3 guys on our current staff.
  8. Quick question. The topic of freak injuries just came up watching the game with some friends. What was the name of the Red Sox pitcher who came up pitched 2 good games and then hurt himself allegedly falling on a glass in his hotel room lacerating his back? I don't think he ever won another game.
  9. Thanks! Do you realize that I have been agreeing with you recently.
  10. Kelly is trying to catch Porcello with home run balls.
  11. i predicted a 4th place finish, but not a winning percentage. Suffice it to say that I was not thrilled with this rotation, but I tried to be hopeful.
  12. I am not looking to put words in your mouth, but I am going to restate what you have said to see if I am understanding you. 1. The plan has failed 2. If you had your druthers, you would have pursued a different strategy. 3. Just because the plan failed and you didn't like the strategy doesn't mean that it was a bad strategy. Am I understanding you correctly?
  13. you have been very funny in the midst of this misery. We need that to keep from crying. Keep it up.
  14. Speaking for myself and not for others, I didn't like the way the pitching was constructed, because we didn't get anyone better than a #4 imo-- possibly Porcello could have been viewed as a #3. It had nothing to do with a lack of splashy moves. We didn't get anyone good. FTR I don't consider Sandoval a splashy acquisition. He is not a big star. He's a good hitter, not a great hitter and he is an average fielder at best. There is nothing splashy about him except for his paycheck.
  15. How much better is 4 th place than last place?
  16. Corrected. No one else comes close.
  17. Credibility nose dives. Just my opinion.
  18. So tempting. Set up like a softball on a tee without any fielders and a very short fence. This kills me, but for the sake of TalkSox I will pass.;)
  19. You are in great form today. LOL!! If I couldn't laugh about this stuff, I would be talking to myself in the street. Oh wait, I have been doing that too.
  20. Was there another bidder for Masterson? I doubt it. Did they go watch him throw to see if he got some velocity back? I never read any reports on that. What did they do ... go to the Kelly Blue Book equivalent for declining pitchers with lost velocity and just pay him book value. I don't get where the $9 million figure came from. Had someone else offered him $6 or 7 million? Did he say that he would retire if not paid $9 million. How did they arrive at that figure for a pitcher with a 5 + ERA and 7-8 lost mph on his fastball?
  21. Total payroll in those years was probably $150 k. And in the early 60's they weren't even trying to win. Yawkey was paying attention to his other business interests and drinking in those year. Once O'Connell became GM, things changed quickly and the team's improvement was astonishing. The franchise was brought back to life. A GM can make a huge difference. Ben is a water boy with no business savy and probably less baseball knowledge.
  22. I have to give you credit on this one. I wouldn't have put money on it. As you know, I am losing an ERA bet on Porcello. I never deluded myself into thinking that the Tigers were stupid enough to give us a top of the rotation 26 year old pitcher for Cespedes, but I did think he would be a solid 4 possibly a 3. He has been horrible. If he gets his act together, I think he is a good back of the rotation pitcher, but no was is he a number 1 or 2 and no way is he worth his contract.
  23. 2013 was a perfect season. Everytime someone made a mistake, some one else picked him up that season. The timing of that team was unbelievable. Many of Farrell's bonehead moves were covered up by his team that season/
  24. Last year we had no meaningful baseball after the opening weekend, but we spent half the season basking in the glow of the 2013 championship. This 2015 team is worse than last year's team. We have had no meaningful baseball for more than one and a half seasons. Enough already! You are boring your fanbase to death.
  25. Tomorrow's game with Kelly starting should also be a lot of fun.
