  1. If Ortiz comes back next year mid season because we need a big bat and he misses the game but he comes back after they retire his number , he would be the only active.player to wear his already retired number.
  2. Advantage doesn't equate to decisive factor, but it is helpful. To think otherwise is to put one's head in the sand.
  3. Better teams usually get the HFA, so when you don't get it, the odds are against you, because you are probably not the better team. There is no solace to be taken by saying HFA doesn't matter because we are the better team, because you probably are not the better team except when HFA is decided by the All Star game. Losing HFA was an indication that we were not better than Cleveland and not playing in front of the friendly crowd just makes things worse.
  4. i wouldn't offer that.
  5. Not a comparable situation. In 2003 Pedro was at 100 pitches after 7 innings and he labored to get out of the 7th and Grady had Tomlin for the 8th and Williamson for the 9th and both had been pitching very well. in 2004, Pedro was at 88 pitches after 5 innings and his biggest pitch inning I think was the 1st. Also, going to the bell pen for 4 innings is much different than going to the set up guy and closer. It just is mot a comparable situation.
  6. Tito's players were rested and his rotation was set and he managed to overtake us for HFA. He did a good job, and gave his team the best possible chance of winning. Farrell did not.
  7. In this case HFA prevailed over rest and a set rotation.
  8. A statistical advantage, not a guarantee. Play the percentages and hope for the best. I heard that recently.
  9. An advantage... even when teased out.
  10. I can't be wrong, because I was being sarcastic and not taking the position that baseball is deterministic at all.
  11. Baseball is only random when things don't come out the way the numbers dictate.
  12. Yep true, but so many take the numbers as guarantees for all sorts of outcomes.
  13. We should have gotten Kelly merely for taking on Craig's contract. Throwing in 1 year and 2 month of Lackey was an extreme overpay.
  14. And Kelly has been a bust on balance.
  15. LOL!! What a plan!
  16. And game 1 was also riveting.
  17. The last 2 games were riveting.
  18. The best outcome for Kelly would be 1 season as a set up man-- still not a good deal.
  19. Pedro did not pitch into the 8th inning of that game.
  20. And had just walked the leadoff hitter, and he has had a lot of trouble pitching with runners on base. He was not the best option and it was the 6th inning of an elimination game. Bad move and it turned out to be fatal.
  21. The Red Sox are on the hook for this and it is a total loss. A terrible move by Cherries.
  22. I would be thrilled if they could keep Betts and Bogaerts, but they will be very expensive. Still Pedroia would be gone as would Hanley. IMO, Pedroia wil be very difficult to replace. When I first saw him, I was completely unimpressed, but I really think that he has been the spark for the red Sox for many years. I realize that you might disagree with this.
  23. Some people don't understand that. They ooh and ahh over the farm system, but by the time Groome and others get here Bogaerts, Betts and Bradley will be ready to walk. Pedroia will be gone. Hanley will be gone. And we will be coming up short even if the prospects pan out.
  24. Theo and Maddon looked like they were s***ing themselves in the 8th inning. Fortunately, their team was cool and collected. And they were thrilled when Moore was lifted from the game.
