    Saying that "clutch" or "choke" is difficult or impossible to definitively prove is one thing, but concluding that it doesn't exist (which the statheads including you have said is smug and not definitively supportable.

    There is a smugness on the part of the statheads who think that stats can prove or disprove whether the mental aspect of the game can negatively or positively impact on performance. Only the competitors can know the look of defeat in an opponent's eyes or demeanor or the look of indomitable spirit.

    It has nothing to do with a "nicer story". It has to do with the mental aspect of the game. Some players are tougher mentally than others, and that doesn't always correlate to talent levels.

    By definition Yankee fans are idiots, no exceptions. Say what you will about the Boss, and I loved to hate him, but he just didn't tolerate losing. The sons don't have the same fire burning inside, and as a Red Sox fan, I am very happy about it. The Yankee fans that I know who saw Mantle and Maris in their primes don't think a heck of a lot about any of this young core except Sanchez. They might have a couple of good major league players in the pipeline, but they could just as likely be a bunch of nobody's. One acquisition will not cure what ails the Yankees. The last Yankee Dynasty had a few great payers come out of their system, but they acquired a load of stars to go along with them. The Sons have passed on many ace free agents over the last few years. That is not the way to get back on top.

    I think we just differing on semantics. I agree that clutch is the opposite of choking. Guys definitely choke. Choking happens at the big league level. Choking is a well known part of Golf. In Golf everyone chokes. The guy who chokes the least and last wins. It was also acknowledged that Jack Nicklaus never choked. He was clutch.

    Most Yankee fans that I know wish that the Boss would resurrect and correct the course of this team. Th sons are all about profit above winning. The boss hated to lose.

    You can say it as much as you want and point to whatever statistical studies you can find, but I will give more credence to the players and coaches in the clubhouses.

    in every clubhouse , the players know which of their mates has steel in his spine and who will wilt under the pressure. Just because they are all major leaguers doesn't mean the they all handle the pressure. They don't. As long as clutch exists in the clubhouse it exists and is real. Clutch players don't always put up great numbers, because the game is very hard, but the pitchers know who are the toughest outs and batters know which pitchers never give in in tight spots.

    An 8 year run is pretty good for any manger in any town. Plus, Francona didn't lose his job, because Boston is a tough town. He lost his job, because he admittedly lost control of the clubhouse.

    i understand your small sample size position. It is not that difficult to understand. And you could say it with 80% fewer words and posts. What I don't understand is how you can say in one post that Clutch can neither be proved or disprove and then in the next breath categorically deny that it exists. That makes no sense. And then you go into this who riff about how a hit can be clutch but will not let someone characterize the player as clutch. You start to get into the realm of nonsense.

    If they are going to put on someone for fluff who knows little or nothing about the game,they should be either female eye candy (because the audience is overwhelmingly male) or extremely funny. Gary misses the boat on both counts.

    Blah blah blah. After a while it is white noise with all of your caveats and exceptions and confusing context. Sometimes reading your posts is like reading a warning label on an over the counter painkiller. It tells me everything except whether it will make my headache go away.

    Based on what? It was one of the dumbest signings of all time. $72 million and they knew almost nothing about the guy, and he had almost no resume or career worth mentioning. He hadn't played for a year or year and a half Whalen he was signed. Ben would have had a better chance of success if he went on that TV show where people bid in storage lockers.

    Succinct and clear is not your hallmark. That doesn't make you a bad poster. It is just an accurate evaluation of your posting style Yeah, and I don't think you would get much disagreement with this, but then you will say that it doesn't exist. Not being able to prove something doesn't equate with it not existing. That is clear and succinct.
