    That's not a bad value. I would doubt that they would shop him in the off-season.

    I wasn't sure if my opinion about them was clear . I have made a special effort the last couple of days to resist the temptation of bringing them up. Tonight I am going a step further and I am making an effort to not engage anyone like MC who tries to bait me on the point.

    I think you may be undervaluing him. NESN is reporting that 7 teams have interest in him. He's a lefty that is pitching very well right now. His arm is fresh because he has not pitched most of the year and he has always been a money big game pitcher. He could make the difference for some team in the post-season. Each of the teams headed for the playoffs has some starting pitching deficiencies, except maybe for the White Sox. It is a sellers market for this commodity.

    We don't have enough pitching, but the yankees aren't exactly swimming in it either, especially with Moose on the shelf. If the Red Sox got him and wanted to pare payroll they might have had to eat some of his salary, not most of it. We didn't even have to eat most of Rent a Wreck's salary. We ate $11 million of $30 million and Abreu is much better than Renteria. You need to think a little more creatively. Frankly, after watching him with the Yankees, I would have kept him for the 1 year and let him play RF. The heart of the order would have become as potent as the 2003-2005 teams and he is a good fielder with good speed on the bases. I have not contradicted myself one bit on Abreu. My position is that we should have made the move. This is not inconsistent with the position that we need pitching. We need both.

    I complained that we spent too much on Hinske because he's garbage. I also suggested that the Red Sox could have unloaded Abreu in the offseason if they didn't want to pay his full salary. He would have been an expensive stop gap move but our competition is the Yankees and the FO can't keep getting beat to the punch. Whether he would have made the difference is debatable. I don't think he makes the Red Sox a WS winner, but the Yankees are not that good either. He might have been the differnce maker in the division. Also, for a one-year investment of $17 million, he would been part of a very formidable 3,4, and 5 with Manny and Ortiz. $!7 million is a big contract, but not a big, long term contract, and it would have been a bargain compared to the $21 million spent for one year of Renteria.

    Everything with you is an extreme. Who said buy superstars? Smart spending doesn't necessarily mean superstars, but you can't wait for the farm to fill out a roster. Which team is it with the smart FO that has all of its starters, position players and relievers from its farm system? The answer is none. Every team has to fill gaps. It's done through trades or FA's. Find me a competitive team that doesn't have players that it signed as FA's or got in trades.

    If the Sox had Abreu and not the Yankees, the Sox would have been pummuling the Yankees in the Ponson game. The Yankee pitching was nothing special in at least two of those games, but the Red Sox didn't have the guns to take advantage. The Yankees did. In the last game, a single key hit could have turned that game. He most definitely could have made a difference in two or three of those games. He would have added some key hits for the Red Sox, and his absence from the Yankee lineup would have given the Red Sox pitching some key outs.

    Nice catch by Crisp-- a webgem, even though it might have been a trap. He's just not consistent out there.

    Yeah that's what teams do to fill gaps if they want to contend. The idea is to keep the good prospects and trade the lesser ones. Should the FO wait for the AA boys to be ready to assume rotation spots? Is your solution is to go with a three man rotation until the farm yields a crop? That doesn't sound to practical. Are you defending the Red Sox spending record. They have the second highest payroll in baseball. Their problem is not that they don't spend enough money. The problem is that they don't spend their money smart enough. I advocate spending to get value not to get garbage. The FO has been buying too much garbage recently. They are really doing something wrong to spend so much money and be so bad.

    Carlos Pena with another strikeout. If he and Wily Mo play full time next year, they could set some record for K's by guys with same surname in the same lineup.

    He can only pitch once, but that's not my point. That's your point. My point is that a strong rotation of 5 is more important than a single closer. If you only have one good pitcher, you are going to stink whether he is a starter or reliever.

    Like it is now? I think some serious discussions are going on in the FO about the mistakes they have made. This team is playing worse than any Red Sox team since 2001 and before that 1992. I realize that you have never said that you like collecting prospects. That would be a ridiculous generalization of your posts. Similarly, I don't advocate spending money just for the sake of spending money. I think they should spend to get value. Throwing $24 million at Clement was foolish as was spending $21 million for one year of Reneteria. For an additional $3 million, they could have had O Cab for 4 years. Please make a little effort to analyze the contents of each post and stop resorting to sweeping generalizations. It's foolish and lazy.

    I think it is easier to find a single closer than to find two or three top starters.

    The 2002 Angels bullpen did not just have a dominant closer. Their bullpen was 4 or 5 deep with shut down stuff.

    Pena, more garbage discarded by other teams. How many teams have dumped him.

    Exactly, the yankees had both a strong rotation and the lights out closer. If the Yankees had a bunch of 5 inning pitchers they would not have been able to get to MO with the lead enough. Teams have been able to win without a Mo-type closer if they have strong starters, but I don't know of many teams to win with a lights-out closer and a weak rotation.

    Yeah, you go root for Florida. They love collecting prospects for stars.

    If your starters eat a lot of innings, the good arms in the bullpen will not be overworked and the lesser arms will not have to be relied upon in crucial situations. You'll still need some good arms in the bullpen, but you won't need to be as deep simply because there would be less innings for the Pen to pitch. With a strong rotation, you can get away with 3 reliable arms in the pen and 3 mop-up types. If the Starters are bad or 5 inning starters, you need to be 5 deep with good arms in the Pen.

    Who thought we could get Schilling until it happened or Beckett in this offseason? The FO has to be creative and willing to part with prospects and $ and they can land a top guy to go along with Schilling, Beckett and Papelbon. Also, I agree with Fred that Crisp has to go this offseason. The FO has to sell the idea that the injury was the problem, and let's hope that he has a strong September. If they keep him for another year the other teams will figure out what Cleveland already knew-- that Crisp has reached his ceiling and that he is a horrendous center fielder.

    Freddy Sanchez numbers:lol: Let's not forget the gold gloves that he was awarded even though he has no range. I can see the witers giving the award to Jeter. It really wouldn't surprise me. If they could give him two gold gloves even though he has two step range, they can give him an MVP.
