  1. That's what I meant, and I clarified for you several times. The Red Sox got comparatively weaker.
  2. I thought he was going to the Yankees regardless of Money?
  3. or one that walks 4 to 5 men every outing like Dice K. Between the bid and his salary' date=' it is costing the Red Sox almost $2 million per start this year. Yes, are you kidding? For this year? What do you think? Bad baseball decision. I don't have a very good handle on their financial condition' date=' and neither do you or the Players Union, because baseball steadfastly refuses to open its books. ...and not one Yankee fan will pay $1 more for a ticket this year than if he had not been signed. Any more questions? Why don't we just tip our hats to the Yankees FO for doing the right thing for their team and their fans and just hope that we spank Roger and he is not enough to beat us. Everything else is an excuse or rationalization, really sour grapes and it makes us look like whining *******s.
  4. .Even the Red Sox FO is not crying poverty on this one, so why are you crying it for them? Yes and comparative strength or weakness is all that matters in a competition... right? I believe that the Kilo said that they would be equal this year. What does this say to you?
  5. We don't know. Conjecture and rationalization. Apparantly, the FO drew that line at $4 million less than they offered last year. We offered him $18 million prorated which is $4 million less than last years offer. At the prorated salary offered' date=' we'd be giving ihim about $12 million for 4 months. Did anyone think that $12 million would get the job done? I don't think so. For this year, I'd take my chances with the aging HOFer rather than the kid recovering from cancer.
  6. They have a right to be happy. It was the best move available to their management to improve their team. We may still beat them, but it would have been easier if we had Clemens and they didn't. Is anyone here drinking so much Kool Aid that they would disagree with that?
  7. Tavarez is the better option? We would rather face Clemens than Rasner? Where is the better option?
  8. My point was that if the Red Sox had upped their bid to be in the ballpark with the Yankees' bid, we could conclude the Red Sox were serious about getting him and that Clemens was predisposed to going to the Yankees if he took a comparable Yankee offer. We would also have found out if the yankees were willing to pay any price. Our guys were not in the ballpark with their offer, so none of these things can be concluded. Their offer was lower than last years' offer of $22 million prorated. If they wanted him so badly, why offer him less than you offered him last year? I conclude that they didn't want him.
  9. Clemens would not have been a huge upgrade over Tavarez. Would $18 million be worth it if it makes the difference between the playoffs/World Championship and second place? I think so.
  10. More rationalization. ORS, please don't become a FO ballwasher on me. It's a cheap shot to say that it is my "thing" to criticize the FO. I acknowledge their good moves. I always liked the Beckett deal. I was turning cartwheels for Dice K and I was unwavering in my belief that they would get him signed. I like the Lugo signing. Initially, I even liked the WMP-Arroyo trade. It would be boring though to debate the things that I think they did right. Discussing the deficiencies of the team generates a more lively discussion That is what I am about. The Yankees made a good move and our FO arrogantly sat on their hands thinking they didn't need Clemens: From Today's Boston Globe: They needed to sell the agent that Clemens was a top priority, and they apparently failed at that.
  11. We'll have to see what the Red Sox offered. Of course the FO will spin and coverup and talk in circles, so we may never know. Fact is they lost out to the Yankees on a very important piece of the puzzle. They are both very large market rich teams. Cashman ate our lunch.
  12. Um, you ask the agent what it will take to get him. It's not a sealed bid. The agent is trying to get his client the best deal, so the way it usually works is that the agent goes to the competitors and says we have an offer of X from team y. What do you have to offer?
  13. It was prorated at the rate of $28 million. He will be getting $18 million.
  14. They should have met the Yankees offer. It was a mistake not to do so.
  15. Letting the Yankees get Clemens was a mistake. The FO made a costly mistake. Period.
