    They are dominating the Sox. It reminds me of a game that my son played in the 7th grade. His team was so far ahead that when he hit the ball to the next field we stopped all the runners after they advanced one base so as not to humiliate the other team. Is there a merecy rule?

    I don't care about how he eats innings and blah blah blah. He sucks and he has n't been able to take the ball to give 200 innings in the last 3 years. Get rid of him and get a real pitcher.

    Whenever they cut to Rosenthal during a game, I always have the same comment. He adds absolutely nothing to the broadcast. He never has any interesting information. His rumors are almost always unsubstantiated and turn out to be wrong, and he is not the least bit entertaining. I am convinced that he is married to a network executive's daughter. Plus, he is a short ugly midget. Edit: I guess he must be trying to get himself a controversial image (like Howard Cosell) to get himself some sort of distinction. Cosell, however, had a brain, good sources, and a very distinctive voice.

    He's very large, but for his frame, he is not very fat at all. His legs will go, but I don't think they will go as fast as Mo vaughn's. Mo was a fat slob.

    Ortiz will produce again. Also, let's not forget that they played very few meaningful games in September 2006. If those games had been critical to a playoff berth, he would have been pitched around quite a bit more. I am not saying that the injury is not a major factor, but the absence of Manny makes his situation worse, because he is seeing more offspeed stuff and he is committing earlier because of the injury. There is more than one force at work here resulting in his below par performance. I don't think it is fair to conclude that he is in a decline due to age or injury yet. We need to see how he bounces back next season. If healthy, I expect that his HRs will be down from the 40+ to which we have become accustomed, because he will be pitched differently, but I expect that his OBP and BA will remain high.

    His 7 HRs in September were down from 10 in August and 14 in July when Manny was in the lineup. He's a great hitter, but even greater when Manny was behind him.

    Does he realize that Coco is on the team and that he plays CF?

    I would guess that it Youkilis's line in the last 2 post seasons. I would also say that he benefited from batting behind Papi (this year) and behind Manny and Papi (last year) rather than that they benefited from batting near Youkilis. He is an excellent hitter, but he doesn't carry the fear factor of the other two. After a couple of more years like this, he might have that effect on pitchers, but he is not in that class yet.

    He was an average OF on an above average offensive team. Compare to his team, he sucked in 2007. The issue is that the pitching has been getting beaten like a pinata. The worst slump that Ortiz suffered was at the beginning of this season. When he started to be able to clean out the inside fastball, the slump was over in a big way. The problem is that he doesn't see too many insided fastballs to challenge him. Pitchers would rather walk him, because the X factor is not on deck. I'm not going to denigrate Youk, who is a great professional hitter, but he is not the threat to go deep that Manny is. If Youk doubles, Papi still doesn't score from first, so why pitch to him with 2 outs. That would be managerial incompetence. Ortiz would be pitched differently if Manny was behind him. The two guys back to back changed the whole dynamic of the game. If you don't understand that, then you haven't been paying attention for the last 5 years.

    Drew sucked in 2007. When was the last time Varitek was an offensive force for the Sox. Lowell was so good in 2007 once he was put behind the two boppers. What do you think the lineup would be like without Manny and Ortiz. Have you ever seen a righty/lefty combo as good as Manny and Ortiz. I am hard pressed to think of any RH hitter better than Manny. Removing him from the lineup immediately made it a less threatening lineup. When the Sox got him, he immediately transformed the team into any offensive team.

    Lidge is trying his best to blow the game. Manny double with two outs and Martin reached on a strike out wild pitch.

    That Beer league Matt Stairs just hit a 2 run PH bomb off Broxton. Wow!!! Phils 7-5 in the 8th.

    If you haven't noticed the Sox have a pop gun lineup without Manny. When Pedroia doesn't hit, they don't score. Ortiz rarely gets challenged with the fastball anymore, and no manager in his right mind would let his pitcher challenge him. He is the one legitimate gamebreaking offensive player in the lineup. Youk is a great offensive player and Bay has been solid, but Manny and Ortiz were a wrecking crew. When one was hot he carried the team. When they were both hot, they destroyed the opposing pitchers. Their presence in the middle of the lineup made everyone in front of them and behind them better. Pitchers couldn't work around them because they could n't put them both on. Now, it is much easier to work around just one of them. They are not exactly stacked with guys with 40+ HR potential. In fact, with the exception of Bay (and he's a long shot) there is no one in the lineup with 40 HR capability. Ortiz is not replaceable, and neither was Manny's bat, if you haven't noticed. Manny had to go, because just shut it down. His bat hasn't been replaced, no matter how much Bay has pleasantly surprised us.

    They have pounded the Sox starting pitchers pretty thoroughly the last two games. The offense sucked today, but the real problem is that their offense has been abusing the Red Sox pitching.
