I am still trying to make some sense of te Kotchman acquisition. Where does he fit in at all, and Why did the Sox have to pay $1 million to get him? I'm at a loss.

Just for a little perspective on how bad Smoltz has been. If he throws four complete game shutouts in a row, his ERA will come down to 3.60. Realistically, there is no way his ERA gets under 5 this year. No chance whatsoever. What that means is that he sucks.

Well, if he loses his next two starts and the team misses the playoffs by 1 or 2 games, then it falls squarely on the FO as only stupidity will make them stick with this guy.

On a brighter note, despite Ellsbury's unbelievable catch, Smoltz was still able to raise his ERA from the 7.03 at the start of the game to 7.12 when he finished.

Beautiful catch by Ellsbury, but it's ultimately pointless. It's just going to prolong the Smoltz suffering. If that had gone over the wall and he gave up another homer to make three homers in the inning (and a near HR by Markakis), maybe he would have quit. This is like Ali against Holmes. I just kept hoping for him to fall down and get counted out instead of watching the relentless pummeling.

He isn't? Lowell's OPS is .821 this season compared to VMart's .832. Lowell's Slugging % is higher. Is this a huge upgrade? I don't think so.

Maybe 4 solo shots in a row this inning will finally send Smoltz to retirement and we'll be thru with him.

In about 5 years from today, people will be looking at Smoltz's stats to evaluate his HOF candidacy and they'll see the 2009 stats. They'll say. That's right he went to the Red Sox for 1 year after he was finished. He hung on one year too long.

Dice K will be back in September. He has been very unlucky this year. That is bound to change if we are still in the race in September. Wakefield will be back soon, and he can start the 4th game of the playoffs if we make it. Oh goodie!

I read Smoltz's lips. He said that the home run pitch came out of his hand very nicely. Hey Smoltz, read my lips. You are thru. Retire after tonight before you cost us a playoff spot. BTW He has managed to increase his already ridiculously inflated 7.03 ERA.
