    Also, they are rolling the dice big time on a post op Lackey. I am not seeing the wisdom in that. If he has a hiccup, or Doubront hits a sophomore slump, or Dempster has a dumpster type year and it will be a very rough season. One or more of these things are likely to happen. If 2 or more happen, the house of cards will collapse very quickly, and it will not matter if our offense is like the 2004 Sox.

    I don't have "guys". We're all here together. Fred and I disagree on very fundamental things. He's for bringing up the kids and developing them. That is not a position that I have ever taken. We disagree on a lot, but we just don't attack each other over it. Fred bites back if attacked. He doesn't attack first. The calling out mentality results in retaliation and unpleasantness. It makes for lousy discussion.

    Yes, the season would not be a success. Improvement doesn't equal success. It's just improvement. Standards of success would differ from organization to organization relative to the resources of that organization.

    I see iortiz point. A big market team that spends up to or over the LT cap, should have as its standard for success making the playoffs .

    Standards don't get watered down by low expectations. It's that simple.

    Making the playoffs is a standard for success. No one "expects" success ever year, but a substandard season is a failure regardless of expectations. Otherwise, the Royals would be a huge success.

    I can't blame the Marlins for setting that as their price. I wouldn't want to part with the guy either unless I got overwhelmed. That being said, I'd offer them to pick any 3 they want and then I'd present them with a group of prospects (lower level) and tell them to pick 1 maybe 2 from that group. I agree that Stanton is a pipe dream, but he's worth pursuing. I'd hate to see another team get him if he is truly on the block.

    I am not sold on the studliness of Barnes. I am waiting until he shows some dominance at AA. The Sox have been suck ass at drafting and developing starting pitching. I will remain skeptical until I see some results.

    No one is going to give up their top 6 prospects. That is why Felix is still in Seattle. It wasn't a serious offer. If anyone would bite, Seattle knew that it would be a huge overpay. They are looking to sign him to a $100 million extension. I can't think of any player who netted the top 6 prospects from a team. If we plugged Stanton into a lineup with Ortiz, Middlebrooks and Pedroia. That would be some formidable scary ass lineup. I think we could bludgeon ourselves to respectability for 2-3 years at least despite the substandard starting pitching. That would give us some time to restock the farm.

    The contract that helped build the championship was manny's $160 million contract. The problem more recently is that the bumbling Theo fanned on almost every big ticket acquisition. He picked the wrong guys.

    Is someone discussing $100 million contracts. Plus, it was $100 million contracts to the wrong players that got us in trouble.

    Also, I don't think you would have to give up 6 prospects to get him. I can't recall a trade where 6 prospects were traded for 1 player. I do think it would be very reasonable to let them pick whatever 2 or 3 they want without restriction.

    Recover? We suck now. At least Stanton would give us a wrecking ball to go into the middle of the lineup and provide a tone of excitement and a lot of offense and some wins. I don't understand the prediction of injury by him. The prospects can get injured too and never provide a thing at the ML level. Our #1 rated prospect, Westmoreland had career ending brain surgery. It happens to the prospects too.

    Seriously, Cherries is heading towards a huge crash and burn if he is planning on Nava and Sweeney playing significant roles with the team and starting the season with the team. These are really barely borderline major leaguers. They are emergency type players who you put on a bus once or twice a year to come to Fenway to fill in. They are not platoon players or role players. They suck and having them on the opening day roster will portend of a really s***** year at Fenway.

    No one is off the table for Stanton. You empty the farm to get a guy like him. The only player that we might regret losing would be Bogaerts.

    I didn't make any blanket statement. I just noted the roster changes from last year and asked how much better this group will be than the 69 wins from last year. In 1967, Dick Willams predicted the Sox will win more than they will lose. That was a radical and aggressive statement back then. Since then we have had very few sub .500 seasons. It's a radical thought to predict more losses than wins since 1967. Unless there are more roster changes, I am tending towards predicting a sub .500 season. I think our talent level is not higher than last season, except in the pen. Injuries will happen just like they have happened in the past few years, so we can't count on better health.

    If we add Darnell MacDonald after getting Sweeeny, we are essentially the same team as last year with Napoli taking AGons place. Drew for Aviles. Gomes for injured Crawford. Victorino for Ross. Dempster for Beckett. Are these upgrades over the bunch that won 69 games? How many wins will they add? The Bullpen has had the biggest upgrade. They probably add 5+ wins.
