  1. $1.5 million is chump change, and they can DL him to start the season and then rehab him. He doesn't have to take up 1 of the 25 spots until ready.
  2. It's a smart business move bringing Pedro back. People loved him. Franchises are smart to show off their icons. It allows the fans to better connect to the current team which lacks exciting players. How is that pulling the wool over someone's eyes. Special instructors that come to spring training spend almost no time with the players after the team comes north, so they have very little impact. They help some, sure, but let's not look at this as a major move. Yaz has been working with our hitters since the 80's. Sure he helps, but come on. It's more PR than anything else. They will show up in the Legends Box at Fenway and sign autographs and go to dinner with some wealthy fans and attend other events for the team. That's what they are there to do.
  3. A PR move all the way. We have about 3 recognizable ballplayers, and only Ortiz and Pedroia would draw a crowd on the street. They need to generate some interest in the team and no one in recent history has generated more excitement among fans than Pedro. He's not going to turn Rubby into an ace.
  4. With Marcum and Jurjens gone, it is pretty clear that Cherries was being forthright and honest when he said that he thought the pitching was muh improved over last year's staff. I think he is mistaken. It is only marginally better.
  5. Very perplexing.
  6. Isn't Lars just another one of Theo's busted prospects?
  7. We shall see. I like nothing better than when a player goes to the Yankees and flops. My two favorite current Yankees are Pedro Felicaino (2 years 0 innings) and Pineda (1 year 0 innings so far). They took the Yankee money and never got off their couch. Hopefully, Youkilis will do the same.
  8. That's right. Napoli is ranked behind Youkilis, but Youkilis doesn't have a degenerative hip disorder. It's really kind of a crapshoot at who gives the better production this season. IMO, I would have gone for the one year on a guy without a bad hip. I think the short RF porch at Yankee Stadium will help Youk's production. We shall see. A bad hip can be career ending. I would have avoided the risk altogether.
  9. I am hoping that he bombs in pinstripes. I will gag if he ruins opening day for us.
  10. Youk had an off season. Is it time to bury his bat? We shall see. Napoli is just not that good. He gives you nice production from the catcher position, but he's nothing special at 1B. Carlos Pena gives better production most years.
  11. Marcum would have been a very nice addition. When healthy, the guy is very good. He would have deepened the rotation and that depth would have come in handy when the inevitable happens. We can't expect the 5 we have to make 30 starts each. If one of them misses substantial time, we really don't have the depth to cover that. If 2 guys go down or one goes down and another shits himself, it will be a fiasco.
  12. It really rankles me that a cheap ass organization like the Mets got him. He was very obtainable by us. Maybe yhe Mets will look to salary dump Johan.
  13. Just as much as I think that Youk will outhit Napoli.
  14. I realize that outfield trios are being discussed, but the deepest most productive OF in my memory was the 1977 Red Sox: Yaz Rice Evans Lynn Carbo Compare that to the garbage in our OF the last couple of years.
  15. It would be an interesting bet, but it violates my cardinal rule of betting. I have at times bet on the Yankees when their victory looked inevitable and the Sox already had been eliminated. If you can't beat'em profit from them. However, I have never wagered on the Yankees or a Yankee player against the Red Sox or a Red Sox player. I just can't do that.
  16. Jackie Robinson was a multiple sport star. Wilt Chamberlain was a track and field standout in addition to basketball. http://ezinearticles.com/?Wilt-Chamberlain---Track-and-Field-at-the-University-of-Kansas-%28KU%29-In-Addition-to-Basketball&id=4113288
  17. Jacko said that he could play his whole career with this condition or end up with a hip replacement. It is a risk. Even when healthy, Naps is not a great offensive producer at 1B, and he's not a very good fielder. Youkilis would have been a better risk for 1 year, IMO.
  18. If Napoli can't take some time behind the plate, I would have opted for Youkilis for 1 season at 1B. He cost $12 million, and he doesn't have a bad hip. Plus he is a superior defender at 1B. Napoli as a full time first baseman is a very meh move.
  19. It speaks more to the team than to you as a fan. It wasn't that long ago that almost everyone on the roster would attract a crowd on the street. The losing has caused a loss of interest to a certain degree. My wife is not a big baseball fan, but being married to me for many years she has been exposed to a lot of Red Sox games. She usually has a better knowledge of the roster than most people on the street. Last year, in August, she very seriously said to me during a game as she passed thru the room: "Who are these guys? Is this the Red Sox?" I haven't heard that from her in 30+ years of marriage.
  20. The Red Sox marketing department is pulling out all the stops. This could be an indication that ticket sales are not doing very well, and they are trying togin up interest. Good luck to them. It is a bone chilling freezing day. There will not be a lot of people on the street. Also, the 4 players that will be involved are barely recognizable in uniform, never mind in winter attire. They need Wally with them just for people to realize that there is a Red Sox activity going on.
  21. He already has some miles on his arm. After another 420 innings over 2 years, you would have to wonder how many years he has left at the top of his game.
  22. I think it has to go into the pipe dream category.
  23. If Ellsbury is having a 2011 type season, he could net a decent prospect. If Hanrahan pitches like he did for the Pirates, he might net us something decent. Drew could get us a prospect or two, but not top prospects. IMO, Napoli will not get us anything with his defensive limitations and injury risk. Remember, that these would be 2 month rentals. You don't get blue chippers for a rental.
