  1. Marcum would have been a very nice addition. When healthy, the guy is very good. He would have deepened the rotation and that depth would have come in handy when the inevitable happens. We can't expect the 5 we have to make 30 starts each. If one of them misses substantial time, we really don't have the depth to cover that. If 2 guys go down or one goes down and another shits himself, it will be a fiasco.
  2. It really rankles me that a cheap ass organization like the Mets got him. He was very obtainable by us. Maybe yhe Mets will look to salary dump Johan.
  3. Just as much as I think that Youk will outhit Napoli.
  4. I realize that outfield trios are being discussed, but the deepest most productive OF in my memory was the 1977 Red Sox: Yaz Rice Evans Lynn Carbo Compare that to the garbage in our OF the last couple of years.
  5. It would be an interesting bet, but it violates my cardinal rule of betting. I have at times bet on the Yankees when their victory looked inevitable and the Sox already had been eliminated. If you can't beat'em profit from them. However, I have never wagered on the Yankees or a Yankee player against the Red Sox or a Red Sox player. I just can't do that.
  6. Jackie Robinson was a multiple sport star. Wilt Chamberlain was a track and field standout in addition to basketball. http://ezinearticles.com/?Wilt-Chamberlain---Track-and-Field-at-the-University-of-Kansas-%28KU%29-In-Addition-to-Basketball&id=4113288
  7. Jacko said that he could play his whole career with this condition or end up with a hip replacement. It is a risk. Even when healthy, Naps is not a great offensive producer at 1B, and he's not a very good fielder. Youkilis would have been a better risk for 1 year, IMO.
  8. If Napoli can't take some time behind the plate, I would have opted for Youkilis for 1 season at 1B. He cost $12 million, and he doesn't have a bad hip. Plus he is a superior defender at 1B. Napoli as a full time first baseman is a very meh move.
  9. It speaks more to the team than to you as a fan. It wasn't that long ago that almost everyone on the roster would attract a crowd on the street. The losing has caused a loss of interest to a certain degree. My wife is not a big baseball fan, but being married to me for many years she has been exposed to a lot of Red Sox games. She usually has a better knowledge of the roster than most people on the street. Last year, in August, she very seriously said to me during a game as she passed thru the room: "Who are these guys? Is this the Red Sox?" I haven't heard that from her in 30+ years of marriage.
  10. The Red Sox marketing department is pulling out all the stops. This could be an indication that ticket sales are not doing very well, and they are trying togin up interest. Good luck to them. It is a bone chilling freezing day. There will not be a lot of people on the street. Also, the 4 players that will be involved are barely recognizable in uniform, never mind in winter attire. They need Wally with them just for people to realize that there is a Red Sox activity going on.
  11. He already has some miles on his arm. After another 420 innings over 2 years, you would have to wonder how many years he has left at the top of his game.
  12. I think it has to go into the pipe dream category.
  13. If Ellsbury is having a 2011 type season, he could net a decent prospect. If Hanrahan pitches like he did for the Pirates, he might net us something decent. Drew could get us a prospect or two, but not top prospects. IMO, Napoli will not get us anything with his defensive limitations and injury risk. Remember, that these would be 2 month rentals. You don't get blue chippers for a rental.
  14. Yes, I am assuming that there will not be a big improvement by the same crew that has been under performing, since September 1, 2011, especially if Salty remains as the catcher. I think their off season plan was either badly misguided, or they started with a better plan to retool the pitching, but they implemented the plan badly. From the outside looking in, it has little rhyme or reason. The explanations that I am reading are strained rationalizations. It's like fixing the tires and brakes on an old clunker that needs a full engine tuneup. It's not going to run any better.
  15. The only value is that they could have banked an additional $50- 60 million to go after pitchers next year.
  16. IMO, A couple of months of these guys will not pull in the kind of prospects that it will take to get King Felix.
  17. If Ellsbury, Drew and Napoli are all on one year contracts, how could they be shipped to Seattle for King Felix? I am not getting that. I don't see Seattle walking away from their centerpiece. If King Felix gives them no choice and walks in 2015, I don't have a great deal of confidence that we would outbid the Yanks, Dodgers and others for him. Do you have anything to believe that getting King Felix would be something more than a pipe dream?
  18. I don't think the moves they have made will make them competitive this season unless they still add to the pitching. If this is the team they are planning to go north with, they should have opted for a total rebuild, IMO.
  19. There's nothing wrong with going with #2, but they retooled the wrong part of the team. The starting pitching needed the retooling. What they have managed with this so-called retooling, is a team with a roster that looks like a 4th place or last place team, and yes, if that happens with $170 million payroll, I will lose my s***. If they did a total rebuild, I wouldn't like finishing at the bottom, but at least I could understand that. Finishing 4th or last for $170 million is not a retool. If they wanted to retool, they should have done something more to improve the starting pitching.
  20. It wasn't in support of anyone, just noting that you will go out of your way to be a snarky prick-- very petty.
  21. There is no reason to go out of your way to be snarky in an unprovoked manner. That helps foster ill-will-- your specialty.
  22. It was very obvious that Tito's last Spring camp was a country club, and a dead one at that. I have never seen a more complacent, lifeless training camp. They started the season in a collective coma. Tito was responsible for that not the owners.
  23. Being gracious is just not part of your character.
  24. It wasn't Yaz. I could pick Yaz out of a lineup with 9 other Yaz lookalikes. I am almost certain that it is Williams. Same body build. I've seen pictures of him wearing that type of glove.
