A hit tonight, two walks---that is not bad at all. He is starting to really show some discipline at the plate; no turning back for him now. He must keep this up. Papa Jack's hand is all over the place on this. I missed some of the ball game on MLBTV. Someone told me he goofed up on a ball hit to him again. That true? I don't think that is something we can put up with over the long haul though. He has to get better in the field as well.

I'm actually agreeing with a Yankee fan? Well yes, you are right. Then again Dan Douquette was a lousy person from the get-go, a real low lifer who showed no respect to anyone but demanded a boatload of love from everyone else. The Red Sox ownership that took over made their first great move when they showed him the door. I still think, however, that Roger Clemens finishing his career in a Red Sox uniform would cap his career, bring him back to the city of his glory and add a final happy chapter to the whole story. Also, it would probably put us in the World Series.

MTB and Beck. First of all I don't think it is a good idea to bench Niixon tonight as he is coming off an injury and a three hit game. As for Kearns, that would have been my first choice easily. Kearns can play a good outfield and, when healthy, is a very good hitter. That being said, we can only hope Pena keeps improving in fits and spurts because if he goes backward the team is going to be hurt and Theo will get the blame for making a very bad trade. We'll have to wait and see.
-
MTB, it looks to me like Monster Man still holds some anger towards Clemens and if I had been rooting for the Sox as long as he claims he has I would certainly be inclined to hold some harsh feelings as well. The facts are that Douquette blew it badly what with his over the hill crap. Besides, Clemens did not go straight to the Yankees; he wernt to Toronto first (two Cy Young years I believe, or at least one)and then on to New York. I think he is thinking of finishing here; would put a cap on a great career and bury some long festering feuds between Bosox and fans and the Rocket.

Believe it or not Ksushi, it might actually be easier to teach a player how to be more selective at the plate for better results than it is to teach him how to be a good defensive outfielder. Pena has always had trouble playing the outfield and you have seen yourself how he has butched one ball after another. It is going to be an adventure with this guy in the field. He has cost Foulke and Beckett runs already with his slip shod fielding and we haven't seen the last of it. Just keep your fingers crossed that he improves as the season progresses.

MTB. really it is a shame Wily Mo can't be sent down for a full year of seasoning and instruction. It would do wonders for him. Besides, he isn't going to beat Nixon out for the spot because I think Trot is headed for a big year. That said, we can only keep hoping he shows improvement with the help of Papa Jack. I have a lot of confidence in that man and he knows what he's doing.
-
Monster, I am saying it is nonsense for ME to consider him a traitor. I was not a Red Sox fan then so it doesn't resonate with ME. My gripe with Clemens was that he was a Yankee and that DOES bug the hell out of me. That feeling would disappear very quickly if he rejoined our club. By the way, though, I think his leaving had a lot to do with Dan Douquette who I believe was a virus for the Red Sox. He alienated everyone and the proof is in the pudding. The guy never got another GM's job, did he? He showed Roger no respect at all, thought he was over the hill and made little effort to keep him.
-
We can all hope that Wily Mo keep improving in the pitch selection department as he has the past week or so, but as far as fielding in right is concerned he does worry me when he plays out there. It really is sad he has no options left. A year at Pawtucket playing everyday would do wonders for him.
-
Hey guys, I said it before and I'll say it again. Clemens on our team makes us the favorite to get to the World Series. Three top notch No. 1's in a rotation? Man, I'm drooling already. I only hope those rumors are right about him coming to the Red Sox. I wasn't a Red Sox fan when he pitched in Boston and fled to Toronto so I have none of this traitor nonsense coming out of my mouth. I do remember him as a Yankee, though, and that sticks in my craw a little----but would disappear in an instant if he donned a Red Sox uni.
-
Schill, you make some good points, but the problem with Pena is that he is a lousy outfielder and has been all his life. The inability to judge and track fly balls is not one that can be as easily overcome as you might think. He is a pure DH type of player from what I can see and we have the best DH in baseball history on our team right now. Maybe when Manny leaves he can be put in left field where he couldn't cause as many problems f or us with his shaky glove; that is, if he is still with us. I'm just not sure about this guy.
-
Omaha, you bet it is. Now if we can get our hitting going again maybe Clement and Wakefield can add to the win list and help themselves get around 15 wins apiece. That would really help us win the East. I also keep hearing there is some possibility that Roger Clemens might sign with us. I'll believe it when I see it but it would be great for us if he did.
-
Clemens would give us a "Big Three" that would be unmatched anywhere in baseball and it would certainly give us a chance to go all the way. Of course, some tell our offense to start getting it together because I cannot understand this paltry lack of hitting. Loretta, Manny, Varitek, Youk and the gang are not hitting up to snuff and they need to get the screws turned on.
-
MTB, people are viewing Pena with rose colored glasses. The fact is he is a debacle waiting to happen out in right field. The guy is a bad outfielder and Theo should have known it seeing him butcher ball after ball in the Cincinnati series last summer. He does seem to be going with the pitch at the plate and showing a little more discipline that he did with the Reds, thanks to Papa Jack. However, I am glad Trot will be back out in right field and hope after seeing what he have in that position for the past few games we all will be a little more appreciative of Trot from here on in.
-
One Red Seat, well now it is three starts for Schilling and Beckett and three wins apiece. Not bad at all from where I'm sitting. Then, again, today we didn't hit very well unless you call five hits hitting. Yesterday Francona had one of his brain locks with that popgun lineup of his. It would be great to see DiNardo pitch a good game and have some run support thrown his way. We are sort of due for a offensive breakout of sorts, don't you think?
-
Jsing, ok with me you try to act like the final authority on the Wells thing---as long as you have some inside info that I don't have. Man, the guy really looked terrible in his Pawtucket start and I was there to see his less than stellar performance Wednesday. It ruined the what had been a great day. What I don't want to see is Francona keep going to this guy as a starter as he kept doing with Embree in relief last year until a half-dozen key games are down the toilet. I also didn't mention that I saw Wells in Fort Myers and guess what? The Rays lit him up for seven runs in one inning. We don't need that.
-
Hey Yankeenator, we all eat crow from time to time; it was just your turn this time around. Yes, Schilling looks like he is back in top form and we have Beckett who ought to be a big winner for us, but we have played only ten games and we are hardly out the gate. As for your team, Johnson and Mussina look pretty good to me so far which means your guys are not exactly bumpkus in the pitching department either. We have Wells to worry about and Clement could be a problem if what happened Thursday becomes a repeat performance a few tooo many times. I do think, though, that Matt will solidify things for himself. He has too good of stuff to keep getting hammered as he did by the Jays. His Baltimore performance was more in keeping with his ability. One game at a time I say; there is a long road ahead, right?
-
Guapo, the Red Sox will no doubt give Wells those starts you claim he needs, but it you would have seen him pitch in person you would be worried, too. I mean the guy had nothing, couldn't put the ball anywhere, and looked like he was mailing it in after that lousy first inning performance. Sure, if he can come around it would be great for our team but remember he will be 43 soon and he isn't in that great of shape from what I could see. Games won early count as much as games won late and I don't want to give any away. Last year after that debacle of his in Oakland he came around big for us. What I wouldn't give to see him to that again. Just in case, though, we need a fifth guy ready to move into the rotation. DiNardo, Lester, Papelbon, a trade? Stay tuned my friend, this may be a little bumpy the next month or so where Wells is concerned.
-
Ksushi, we ALL are worried about our fifth starter. I was at the three game Toronto series and Wells sucked all the momentum out of our great opening day win by pitching like some rube from Podunk. If the Red Sox wanted someone to throw batting practice to the Jays I would have more than willing to take the mound---and for a hell of a lot less money, too. We cannot afford too more many performances from Bummer as we got Wednesday night, and Clement wasn't much better either. We need Wake to step up big time tomorrow and get some real hitting support to get us on our way to another nice winning streak.
-
Well said 700. I remember shouting Curt's name last summer at Angels Stadium, and when he turned around I said "Thank you Curt". He nodded and waved his hand in my direction. He has a free pass from me, too. Curt doesn't want that, though. He wants to lead the Red Sox to another World Series Championship, and now he has Beckett as his sidekick and an emerging Jonathan Papelbon closing games like the pro he's become. My only gripe is that Manny hasn't gotten going yet, and some of the others are are cruise control offensively. That, plus we need Coco and Trot back as soon as possible. Be aware, though. I was at the Toronto series and the Jays are for real. They are a vastly improved team and when we play them again we cannot afford to send our fourth and fifth pitchers out against them. We have to give them our best.
-
Hey Red, you got that right. Schilling looks like he has really come back to his 2004 form. That is a great plus for us. To me, though, we have to get Manny Ramirez hitting and soon. Two runs is tough sledding for continuous winning and we need Trot and Coco back as soon as possible for speed, talent and experience. I don not have much faith is Wily "K" Pena, and even though Mohr hasn't done badly for us. If we could get a good performance from Tim tomorrow and some good hitting that two game nightmare I witnessed this week against the Jays would be forgotten.
-
Thanks for getting back to me so fast JS. I sure hope you are right about Lowrie. I think Theo would be making a very bad mistake to let him, or Pedroia or Ellsbury go anywhere. These three could form a nice young nucleus for the Red Sox for a long time.
-
Crespo and JS, I'm convinced this guy is headed to Boston within a year and a half. He was a standout at Stanford U, hitting and fielding up a storm. He can also run, hit with decent power, and is one heads-up ballplayers. Again, this is one prospect who must not be traded away for some questionable veteran who may or may not help us. We have gone through that scene before.
-
Schill, it all starts with your namesake. Believe me, if Curt Schilling has the big year we hope and expect him to have the rest could just all into place. Beckett is a great co-ace with the veteran righthander, and just as long as Clement knows he doesn't have to be the ace and carry the staff as was thrust on him last season we will be in good shape. Three top notch starters and Wakefield hopefully filling his role and we have the makings of an outstanding starting rotation. Wells? I expect he will come through for us as he did last year. Tomorrow? Well we have Bard and Gonzales and that is a lot of outs, and if the Baltimore pitcher tomorrow is a lefty it might mean strikeout king Pena might get another start. Hopefully the first six in our lineup will make up for the rest and have another great day.
-
Hey guys, I know it is only five games in the well but I have decided to move on with this Johnny Damon thing. I believe Coco will more than compensate for the loss of Johnny, and Loretta will be a vast improvement in the No. 2 spot over Renteria. Hopefully, we will now give Trot and Youk the credit they deserve and realize the latter is an improvement over Millar and Trot should be headed for a banner season. Yes, it is early, very early, but you all have to admit that this is a great way to get the season underway. Two 2-1 wins in five games? When did that ever happen before.
-
JS, I really like Jed Lowrie and I hope he is on the fast track to Boston. This is one of three position players who must not be traded away----Jed, Ellsbury and Pedroia.
