4/14 vs Tampa Bay
seabeachfred replied to BornToRun's topic in Mike Grace Memorial Game Thread Forum
All good teams have two really solid horses to lead the rotation and so far we have two of the best this year. The potential problem is not solved is for someone to step up and become the solid and dependable No. 3 man that we need so badly. Dempster and Doubrant haven't done that yet and we need one of them and maybe both to start making a solid contributiion to the starting staff. Maybe tomorrow Dempter will get it done. It would be terrific to finish the series with the hat trick. At least we go to bed happy tonight. No one will be walking the floor this night. -
First timer @ Boston/Fenway advice
seabeachfred replied to RedSoxfanforlife305's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
You guys are getting me drooling for Fenway Park Ted. I didn't go last year; went to Chicago instead and saw the Red Sox play that three game series there instead. Hearing you, irotiz and a bunch of others are going, I may just shitcan one of my other vacations and join you and the others in July. We'll talk about on the horn this coming week. It will be nice to meet some of the guys in person and we might run into others and they can see if I'm as big a son of a bitch as a few of them thing I am. -
4/13 vs Tampa Bay
seabeachfred replied to BornToRun's topic in Mike Grace Memorial Game Thread Forum
SoxSport, I don't like this closer by committee stuff because some pitchers have a comfort zone and to rotate might throw them off their routine. I will totally agree with you that Hanrahan needs some time off, only a helluva long time off. We need a new closer. Today was proof positive of that. Let Bailey close for awhile. Hanrahan might not get his job back. -
4/13 vs Tampa Bay

I wish we could have gotten that win for Lester because he pitched great ball for us again, but it is great to win the games he does pitch whether he gets the "W" or not. We will have to win the vast majority of the games he pitches if we want to make some hay this season and the same goes for Buchholz. Farrell did two things today that makes him a star in my eyes. Unlike FrancoMa he didn't keep to the same rotation regardless of the rainout yesterday. He skipped over and let Jon pitch in his proper rotation and, secondly, he got Hanrahan's fat ass out of there before he blew the duke for us sky high. Good win---but I still think we're going to have to hit more. Come on Papi, make it back as fast as you can. -
Come on Sox Sport----I'm usually with you on most things but this "juiced up again" stuff is a little over the top. Now the other part of getting himself in shape would be a welcome sign for us because as four of the last five games have shown we could use a little more thunder in our lineup until those we're depending on show a little more success and consistency. He was bothered badly by that wrist in 2008 but did come on well at the end as he did in '09 and '10. It was in '09 that we really sucked those first two months. We certainly can't have that again. We need him with the way he played in 2011 and last year until he got hurt.

4/11 vs the Orioles
seabeachfred replied to SoxFanForsyth's topic in Mike Grace Memorial Game Thread Forum
I was holding out this past winter for resigning Cody Ross, not the greatest fielder but better than Gomes with the glove. Yet we see Cody on the shelf in Arizona. We're just going to have to gut it out with Gomes and hope for the best unless....... 1. Bradley suddenly gets hot and nails down the LF position. 2. Nava finally stays hot for more than one month a year. Aside from that there are few other choices. Gomes was considered a good team player, great clubhouse guy and murder on lefthanders. Let's pray that is strengths are an overmatch for his weaknesses. -

Jackie is pressing badly and I don't think Nava can keep it up. He always start fast and then pisses out. Maybe he won't this year, but Gomes must play against lefthanders, otherwise why the f*** this we get him anyway? Only my opinion but I think we looked like s*** tonight. I'm getting sick of seeing those bastard Orioles always beating us now in our own backyard. -

BTR, tonight we looked very much like that pathetic Red Sox team of last season, failing to hit with runners in scoring position, allowing the Orioles to beat us in a close game at home, blaming umpires for bad calls and God knows what else. We should all be pissed off right about now and so should the team. There should be no more fu##in' excuses; they need to start playing wise and confident baseball again. -
Also one who hasn't the guts to admit he was wrong about something. I told him yesterday that his interpretation of my missive about Cherington was actual praise when he thought it was a hit job---and he still hasn't had the decency to admit that he was wrong. Of course, he could say I was a liar but that would inaugurate total war between him and I on this board. You can call me a lot of things but you sure as hell better not call me a liar.

I've said all along Ted to anyone who would listen that Rubby is just not very good. He has a live arm and a dead brain, is a thrower and not a pitcher. His fastball is as straight as an arrow and he usually pitches behind the count---deadly for a FB pitcher with a straight hummer. With time and experience he might get better but two years ago the Bums of LA were singing his praises and then got rid of him. I saw him a few times on the tube and he stunk just about every time. Webster may turn out to be a solid pitcher for us but DeLaRosa will be a one inning bullpen pitcher who might overpower batters for three outs. No way in my opinion will they want this guy facing batters a second time, let alone a third time.

4/10 vs Baltimore
seabeachfred replied to Jasonbay44's topic in Mike Grace Memorial Game Thread Forum
Ted, I almost called you after this nightmare of a game. I needed someone to vent out my pissed of anger out but took it out on the computer screen. You know, some are going to say the season is early and all that s***, but these games count and one game could mean the difference between a wild card berth or not, and two could mean the difference between an AL East Title and bumpkiss. These are the games we should and must win. The only way to make up for this debacle tonight is to win TWO of these type of games when WE come back in the last inning win.....and preferably on the road. -
Five runs are usually good enough to win; it wasn't tonight. But we didn't hit fine. We are capable of doing better and to give Aceves decent chance to win tomorrow we have to support him with some lusty hitting and we have to find a f***ing closer who can close. I don't know if you were a Papelbon supporter or not but most of the time he was like clockwork for us----and since he left it has been a nightmare in the ninth inning with some of these clowns we've tried in that spot. Someone has to take that job and get it done. Tomorrow we come back and beat these bastards no matter what it takes.

4/10 vs Baltimore
seabeachfred replied to Jasonbay44's topic in Mike Grace Memorial Game Thread Forum
Jopete----Let us blow off some steam. This was a very crushing way to lose the game. I'm calmed down because I blew my cork at my computer when Machado went out of the yard while I cursed that fat son of a bitch with every damn word that I could think of. Now we will see what kind of a team we really have. The Orioles are sky high coming back and winning at Fenway Park in the last inning----again (shades of 2012?) and we have to be down a little. Tomorrow we have Aceves throwing for us and whether we like this guy or not we have to root our asses off for him and hope to hell that we can get more than the five hits we've gotten in the last two games. -
Two out un the 9th and nobody on and porky can't get that last damn out? Of course, when you only get five or six hits you know it is going to be a tough game. I felt like I got belted in the ribs with a 2-by-4 when that ball left the yard. Now all the comments and pokes at Aceves must cease because we really need him to step up tomorrow and I think he will. But we will have to hit better.
-
You got it 700; BSN didn't, and I sent him a missive to let him know. Whether he believes it or not is mute. I intimated that maybe Cherington isn't that bad, might be better than I thought he was. We all misinterpret things on this board it seems. Maybe in his case he has gotten English mixed up with Flemish and Walloon. No harm done. I think BSN will understand, something a couple of others around here might never do. I'll tell you what would make Cherington hit a bonanza. If Dempster works out as a solid No. 3 and Gomes and Drew make solid contributions. Then I think all of us would have to fall in line.
-
-
My guess is that is exactly what the Red Sox front office is planning the next few days or so. Many posters on the board are worried about this because the team is doing well, our defense has been terrific and the club chemistry might take a hit if the roster is jumbled. We're paying Drew $9 million and for that he needs to play and he is a better hitter with more sock than Iglesias has, but defensively he will a grade or so down. The joker in the deck is Carp. He has had much of a chance to show what he can give us but the few times he's been to the plate he hasn't looked all that good. I hope if we need him he can get us a few knocks and not be a total waste at the plate.
-
I think you might be a mite over optimistic about Lackey's early return. You've followed the Red Sox long enough to know that our medical staff has usually been off the mark in estimating the return of our players from the injury list. If you're right in this case there should be no harm done but if you're not we have to pray that Aceves gets his s*** together and gives us the type of work that Julian Taveras used to when he was called on to pinch hit on the mound for extended service in the Red Sox rotation. For some strange reason I think Alfredo just might pleasantly surprise us, and if he doesn't you and others can get on my case.:):):):)
-
I find it a little strange since "Kalish fanclub clubhouse's" pal says I'm the only who can't get along with them. I guess you would now call that a canard. At any rate, give Dojii a few kuddos. His guy is the reason why we won our Home Opener yesterday. Minus that, even with Clay's top notch performance on the hill we would most likely have lost the game, 1-0.
-
Well it looks like I'm not the only guy they have trouble getting along with.....or is it the other way around? As for the depth in pitching, let's face it, there is no one out there who will provide a magic bullet for us. Besides, it's already been said that starting pitching depth are usually journeymen on the downsides of their careers. Someone mentioned Capuano. He is another Harang, a fly ball pitcher who might have trouble surviving in the American League. If we could just get a solid and winning performance from Dempster tomorrow and from Aceves on Friday or whenever, this clamor might die down a little. As for Aceves, he is just nuts enough to go out there as a starter and do what he hasn't been able to do as a reliever. Most of you out there have played baseball in your earlier years, and maybe a few of you have also coached. If so, you know that certain players have a comfort zone, especially if they are a little on the strange side. Ace is strange enough to really surprise us.
-
So maybe Cherington isn't so dumb after all......or very lucky, and you know the old saying that I'd rather be lucky than good. I'll tell you and the other on this thread how the Red Sox could get the lot of us to shut up for awhile on the pitching front. One, Dempster goes out tomorrow and pitches a solid game and gets his first win as a Red Sox, and, two, Aceves pitches when his turn comes up and shows why he wanted to be a starter. Don't laugh at that either. Ace is a nut, and a guy like that might have a psychological comfort zone. He may just be crazy enough to feel more confident in a starting role than he does pitching out of the pen, which if memory serves me well he hasn't been very effective.
-
We could all take a deep breath of relief IF tomorrow Dempster went out there and pitched us to an impressive win. For that to happen he would have to pitch better than he did in that five inning loss to the Yankees, and he would certainly need better hitting and more run production that the paltry two we got in that game. I have always maintained that a good team needs two solid horses in a rotation and we MAY have them in Jon and Clay, but to really make a solid mark three top notch pitchers are usually needed and the jury is out as to whether Dempster, Doubrant or Lackey could be that third man. Lucien, you hit on the head that Harang would have some fits in the AL with its smaller ballparks and deeper lineups but what choice to we have? Lackey is now out for awhile, Morales is still injured, and Webster and Barnes are not ready yet, so we're told. If we could get the guy for a very reasonable price it might be worth our while even though the risk is high that he could become a pinata in our division.
-
Because for one thing we keep hearing that our young pitching prospects are not yet ready. I would love it to be Webster but we hear it's going to be June before they consider him. Who else is there? Lackey is out for awhile and Dempster is very questionable in my opinion. We'll see on Wednesday. Doubrant? Maybe. We still need some depth, however. What are your suggestions?
-
I don't know if it is ridiculous Palodios but I certainly think it is ill advised. Not ridiculous because this has been the Red Sox game plan all along, but Drew uhas only played three games down below and is only one for ten or 11. He needs a few more at-bats on the farm. I have noticed though that Iggy's batting average while high has been the recipient of a lot of scratch and infield type hits. If he crashes it could harm him long term. He also needs to play in a stress free envrironment where he can get his swings in without looking over his shoulder at Drew or Ciricaco.
-
Living in the LA area I know all about Harang and you're right BSN, he is a notorious fly ball pitcher. He can also eat innings, though, and even with our team seemingly off to a very nice start, our lack of starting depth due to injury or whatever concerns me. I don't think we have gone a whole year with a injury free rotation since 2004. Those extra pitchers can come in handy, speaking of which, who would be available if not Harang?
