Schilling aims to tame the Tigers
Boston (31-20) at Detroit (36-18), Friday, 7:05 p.m. ET

The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry gets all of the headlines and publicity, but the Red Sox and Tigers have an even longer history between them.
Boston has won more games against Detroit than any other franchise. The Red Sox are 993-934 against the Tigers in a rivalry that goes all the way back to the foundation of the American League.
The series with the Tigers, who entered Thursday leading the AL Central, is the latest in a tough stretch of the schedule for the Red Sox. Boston lost two of three from Toronto to start this 10-game road trip, and after three games with the Tigers, they head to New York for a four-game set with the Yankees. Once returning to Fenway, the Sox square off against the AL West-leading Texas Rangers.
Friday's game matches two pitchers with a combined 397 victories and 37 years of Major League experience. Curt Schilling takes the mound for Boston after winning his 200th career game in his last start, a 6-4 win over the Devil Rays. The Red Sox ace has a 4-1 record in his last five starts, though he has seen his season ERA rise over a point to 3.93 in that span.
Kenny Rogers looks to rebound after his shortest outing of the season. The left-hander allowed five runs on six hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings on Sunday in a 9-0 loss to Cleveland.
Pitching matchup
BOS: RHP Curt Schilling (8-2, 3.93 ERA)
The veteran right-hander has faced the Tigers only four times in his career, and the results have not been good. He is 1-3 with a 7.20 ERA against Detroit. In his last outing at Comerica Park, Schilling recorded a blown save after allowing four runs in a 7-6 Boston loss.
DET: LHP Kenny Rogers (7-3, 3.76 ERA)
In 46 career games against Boston, Rogers is 11-7 with a 4.95 ERA. Red Sox batters hold a .283 average against him.
Player to watch
Manny Ramirez has a .327 (18-for-55) career batting average against Rogers, with two home runs and 12 RBIs.
