Right it will continue to get lower and then suddenly get higer when contracts comprible to Damon's are added every year ... usually several every offseason. The Yankees payroll may be down for a year or two, but they will continue to acquire stars and will continue to have by far the highest payroll in baseball.
Right and how many years away are the Brewers from competing for a championship? As payrolls get higher it makes it very hard for teams like the brewers to hold on to players they actually have. So the only way teams like the Brewers can compete is if they can steadily produce the best prospects every single year ... which is impossble.
Peter Gammons reports one American League GM says he "expects Troy Glaus to Toronto to happen." Boston and Baltimore have been in, but the Blue Jays were the leaders on Thursday.
A good argument?
We have 4 major sports in this country ... 3 of them now how salary caps.
There are a lot of MLB fans going into every season know their team has absolutly no chance to win beause they don't spend enough money. Which obviously means every year the fan is less dedicated, less excited, and generally cares less about their team. Trust me I've been a Pirates fan all my life. Less fans = Less revenue=Less Payroll. Right now you could argue that the average Salary for teams isn't that high, but the high and low are too far apart. Yes I believe you can blame that on owners but you also have to blame it on the system. How can you expect teams like the Pirates/Drays/Royals/etc to spend more money when they have less and less fans every year due to the fact that the team doesn't make enough money to compete.
Every year the gap between highest and lowest grows and every year we don't have a cap we are ruining any chance to ever have parody again in this sport. Baseball absolutly needs a cap to survive.
Also think about this ... only people who know they can spend hundreds of millions of dollars will be interested in buying teams if they want to win, which in turn means less teams ... smaller league ... and the league eventually turning into 1 division.
ummmm ... maybe I'm missing something here but Lawton was a mediocre OFer using steroids. He is absolutly HORRIBLE in the field, and his hitting has never been anything to write home about. I don't see how in any way you could describe Matt Lawton as a "pretty good player". Matt Lawton is the worst player in the league when it comes to descision making and I think that alone takes him out of the league of a" pretty good player." Especially considering he will be steroid free this year.
This is a low risk no reward signing. Lawton will be nothing more than a warm body.

What a douche. Johnny thanks for the WS but you are a fake, and a turd. I hope your career takes a Bernie Williams like drop off this year.
In the past few years Johnny has gone a long way to prove how stupid he is. This is the exclamation point.

Mackowiak is a great utility man. I don't think you can count on him on a daily basis, but he'll get the job done when he's called on. 35 errors in 619 career games playing 1B, 2B, 3B, LF, RF, CF in his career with the bucs.
It wasn't specifically directed at you. It was directed at anyone who was talking about this. As much as I think Lidge could be a dominiate closer for the next 5 years + atleast, Berkman's constant injuries really scared me. I just don't want to take on high contract players who have a high chance for injury. Especially when we have to give up one of the best hitters in the league.
Well him hitting 9 really wont be a problem since we'd just flip our SS and 2B spots in the order from last year. Loretta will likely take over Rents 2 spot, and Alex will take over Tony G/Cora/Bellhorn's #9
Look at it this way. Our last game we raped the #2 team in the country. Wouldn't you be confident? Who cares what happened before.
Also don't forget Duke has been playing without it's 3rd best player, Nemarcus Nelson. When he returns you're going to see a whole new dimension added to the team.
Memphis is ranked higher than BC so if your saying Memphis should be a pushover than BC would be too. Who cares how we win as long as we win.
I'm confident because I'm a Duke fan.
