The goal is definitely not to be forced to have Wakefield make a playoff start and I don't think the FO has any intention of letting that happen but no matter how you cut it, there are far worse options to have for a 5th starter

In the past two years, MDC has only had about two months where he hasn't been dominant. I'd say he's one of the more valuable cogs to making this bullpen work. I don't know if I'd ask Bard to come in and perform on that level right away.

The biggest key was that he briefly lit up Triple A in the Reds organization so he was rushed to the majors. He's never improved his ability to get on-base and he's never improved his strikeout rate so he's just too much of a liability for any team to have him as a full-time player. He's Adam Dunn without the OBP.

I didn't watch the game but I know Lester has been trying his changeup more and more, did that affect the amount of walks he gave up?

You could put a question mark on anyone starting for the Sox this year. Which Beckett will show up this year? Will Lester regress a bit after a massive innings increase last year? Can Dice-K possibly be as "lucky" as he was last year if his control problems continue? But between Wakefield, Penny, Smoltz, Buchholz and possibly Masterson if it comes down to it, you have to think they'll be able to hold down the 4-5 spots at least adequately

I'm really amazed at how much analysis of this trade goes on to this day. It's not like this was Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson all over again. Yea, Arroyo turned out to be the better player but the Sox definitely don't miss him and if he pitched in the AL East today, he'd get the s*** lit out of him

Wakefield has had a torn labrum for two years now so how is that even relevant to the debate of his effectiveness? And if Penny doesn't work out, Buchholz is right there to pick up the 5th spot and I'll take Buchholz over Arroyo and his 4.77 ERA in the NL Central

Yea, Chris Carpenter. If I made the deal, I'd slide Atkins into the 1B role and have to get Alex Gordon or something to be my 3B

I was offered Braun, Vlady and Lackey today for Morneau, Crawford and Carpenter. I turned it down cause Lackey's elbow concerns me

They don't have a better offense but they could end up having a better bullpen. They have some good arms in Casilla, Devine and Ziegler.

Jeter isn't the speed threat Damon still is but that's a marginal stat when it comes to this. It definitely makes sense

Any team that refuses to negotiate with a certain agent is just being dumb. You can't cut yourself out of the market for a certain percentage of free agents, you just need to do a better job of negotiating and making the player WANT to play for your team.

Yea, if Ellsbury can thrive in the leadoff spot, it makes the lineup very imposing. I don't have much doubt the pitching will be good to great.
