Looking at 2009 stats? really? Cust's OPS in OAKLAND is .856 and I dont know how you can say anyone with 22 HRs and an OPS of .762 over 3 seasons will be a monster with such certainty

So the FO knew Schilling's shoulder was completely shredded when they signed him to that deal? If thats the case, then I retract my statements cause my understanding of the situation is that he underwent a physical, passed it, signed the deal then announced he had the shoulder problems and since the FO wanted some kind of bang for their buck, they made him try and rehab it. The whole thing about whether or not he would get surgery was figured out after he signed the deal, why wasn't that a negotiating point before the deal was signed? Smoltz is completely different, his physical status was/is well-known to everyone while he was a free agent.

any comments about the Cust pick? I think he's pretty comparable to Carlos Pena (offensively at least) who was taken 5 rounds earlier. Cust has good numbers considering he plays for an awful hitting team in a cavernous ballpark

He's a s*** leadoff hitter though, doesn't get on base enough. I thought of taking him too if he fell to me but only cause I have Upton and Crawford at the top of my lineup as it is. I could've buried Ellsbury at 7-8-9

I took Jack Cust cause I desperately need another bopper in my lineup and he fits the bill. Good OBP guy too and I think he's still only 30
