  1. This is one of my big gripes with MLB umps. They reward/punish pitchers for essentially style points. Hit your spot but are out of the zone? Strike. Miss your spot but are in the zone? Ball. The strike zone is the strike zone, how the ball got there is immaterial.
  2. Should have been 16. If the At Bat app on my phone is to be believed, he had Teixeira with pitch #7.
  3. As for today, actual Opening Day, I'll performing a punchlist inspection on the brand new LDR/NICU ward of the hospital we are rennovating (Labor, Delivery, Recovery / Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit). As for the Sox opener, I'll be at a new pub near my house called The Tilted Kilt with some Sox fans from work here in San Antonio. Game starts 3:00 pm CST, so we are all leaving a little early to get there by first pitch.
  4. I don't know his least favorite, but I recall a700 being very fond of Jason Johnson.
  5. I'm as worried about Youk as I am of the belief that Jake Fox will win the MVP this season. For those not following, Jake Fox hit 10 HR this spring.
  6. I'd say he's at the same level, because of the stats, but I give the nod to Curt, because of the other stuff.
  7. According to MLB.com's transactions page for 3/30, he's cleared waivers and been outrighted to AAA. So, not an option. Also, he's been tagged as OF depth stashed in the minors.....for Kansas City. There's a reason this happened. He's not all that appealing.
  8. I don't disagree that the weight of the moment is greater, but that's a different level of importance, not level of play.
  9. Some of the people that pissed me off the most (the last year of Timlin, the last year of Embree, the current Tim Wakefield), also had years that I liked them. Lugo pretty much pissed me off the whole time he was here. I never really liked Canseco. Still don't, mega-douche.
  10. x2 There's really little debate, IMO.
  11. While I understand the intent of your exercise, in my opinion, 4 of those pitchers remain as question marks going into the season. Was Buchholz really that good, or does he revert back to where FIP had him? Can Lackey turn back the clock and pitch like he did in LA? Will we get more of the same nibbling BS and high numbers of runners on base from Matsuzaka? WTF is the deal with Beckett? There's reason for optimism, but there's reason to hold it in check until we see what we've got, too. And, that's where I am right now.
  12. I don't think he's nearly as quick as Iverson was coming out of college. They are very similar in the respect that they score a lot because of a high volume of shots, many of which are a poor decision. But, I don't think he has the game to lead the league in scoring like Iverson did.
  13. Interesting. Of course, if you go by what he actually said, that some of the Yankee guys were getting older, there's no need for retort because he's right. He never said the Phillies were a younger team. It's pretty clear that his point is that the guys key to the Yankees' success (Jeter, Rodriguez, Posada, Rivera) are getting older.
  14. UER or not, Buch got his teeth kicked in today.
  15. I actually think it is more difficult for large market GMs. What hard decisions does a small market GM have to make? They are out of the market for big FA talent, so they aren't really exposed to the risk of big flops jamming up their resources. They have little to no resources. The expectations are lower, so if the minor FAs they commit to do flop, well, it's not like anyone expected grand results. They need to focus on pretty much one thing. Scouting, both make sure they draft well, and to make sure that when they do trade their pre-FA stars away they are getting good players in return. And, with those young players, they don't have to have the same level of concern about enduring rookie stuggles while trying to contend. EDIT: It's not more difficult for the big market GMs to be successful, ie win more games. The job itself, is more difficult though, IMO.
  16. That's recent history. There's also the mid 80's where you had Georgetown, St John's, Syracuse, and Villanova. However, in between these eras, you pretty much had UConn and nobody else, while the ACC was pretty clearly the best conference in NCAA basketball. Duke, UNC, some very good GTech teams, some very good Wake teams, Maryland toward the end of the 90's and early 2000's. I realize you said "almost always", but even that is overstating it, IMO.
  17. Nonsense, my post was specifically about the pitchers, particularly about how they should be regarded similarly. I added the bit about the bias to specifically show Jacko an example of the behavior he engages in that is the root of him getting called out so often. That's not an attack, it's FYI. He chose to respond with childish attacks against my manhood, which is nonsense, and another strawman. I'm not upset, but it seems the only way he can come to grips with what I posted is to consider my posts as coming from someone irrationally perturbed. If you are going to get on your soapbox about proper discourse, please direct it at the one throwing rocks.
  18. The pissy comment about the Yankees being slighted is what started the urine flow. I hope you know I'm not joking. Own up to your involvement.
  19. Leave it to Yankee fans to turn an innocuous comment into a silly pissing match. You guys never fail to show your colors.
