No it isn't, and he wasn't the biggest offseason signee. The Yankees committed $420M+ to retaining Rodriguez, Posada, Rivera, and Pettitte. Had they been less active in maintaining the current roster, you would have seen more activity to improve other areas, IMO. Even the Yankees have a budget, albeit much higher than everyone else.

All the '86 WS games at Shea featured this twit lady who wore either a white undershirt or white sleeves to cover her forearm (contrasted against dark clothing elsewhere). These sleeves really stuck out, and she was right behind home plate. When the Sox were on the field, as the pitcher was staring in / winding up, she would roll her forearms like Daunte Culpepper after a TD. She did it incessantly. Every pitch.

I was 12 at the time, and I recall it being the first time I felt hate. I wanted bad things to happen to that woman and her white sleeves.

FB control looks really good so far. Keeping it down, and the glove isn't moving much. I'd like to see someone who has access to Gameday Premium compare his curves to someone with a real hammer. The ones he threw in the first looked kind of flat and appeared to be effective only because people were guessing.

Why would I watch the tape when I watched the game? I know what I saw. Smoke and mirrors. Will it last? Who knows. He might gain a few mph when it warms, but his stuff was BP stuff last night. He reminded me of Schilling prior to his injury time off last year. Fooling nobody and praying it got hit to a glove.

He was facing a 750 run offense with no appreciable upgrades from last year - with Scutaro playing in place of Rolen to boot. Yet, he still needed 3 GIDP and a pile of excuses from you to make it acceptable.

In your years of watching baseball, how often have you said, "Cripes, how the hell did we lose a series to those twats?", when the team hit the west coast? I know the answer for me is more than I'd like. Therefore, when they are playing within an hours drive from the Pacific and come back East having won more than lost, I'm content.

I wouldn't call his defense massively overrated. It's no secret he doesn't have the best arm, but I think there's much more to defense than that. He's an above average receiver of the ball, and he reportedly is excellent at retaining the scouting report and applying it to the game, something that gives his pitchers a lot of confidence. I think that last part is an important thing that is often overlooked. What's his future? Beyond this year, if he wants to keep catching, I suspect they'll keep him around for a limited amount of time. I also think they need to start working in a replacement. If Kottaras shows even a little promise this year, they should platoon the two next year.

3-1 on an extreme West Coast road trip, can't ask for more. EDIT: And they get out of town early with the day game so the trek back East shouldn't be too taxing.
