  1. I've heard of LEAP, and that, to me, says a lot. When law enforcement officers are telling us the current war on drugs isn't doing anything, we ought to listen. I do, however, take some exception to the notion that illegality doesn't dissuade people from using. I'm subject to random drug testing at work. The fact that I could lose my job, and the potential for social services to get involved with my kids if I'm caught in possession, are significant deterents to me. Therefore, I don't partake, and I would (occaissionally) if there was no potential for penalty. I'm sure there are many who act the same. That said, I don't, nor will I, believe that more people smoking an occassional J is all that bad compared to the current failed effort.
  2. Yeah, I don't have a Paypal account. Never use ebay. Wife does, not sure if she uses Paypal though.

  4. Well, you only get one from each of last year's all-star teams (one AL and one NL all-star). Tough to take JB, even with the postseason dominance, after only one really good year over Santana.

  6. Wow, you've just completely whitewashed a couple of things. Most smokers smoke filtered cigarettes. Due to smoking without filters and the nature of how it is smoked (holding it in), grass smokers generally expose themselves to 3-5 times the tar and CO absorbtion. Smoking does far more harm to the body than drinking. Are high drivers any different than drunk drivers? Dope doesn't lead to as many stupid decisions? I'd certainly disagree, from personal experience, there. I'm not taking this up because I'm anti-drug. I think the war on drugs is stupid. Simple possession, of anything, should be at least decriminalized, but I'm for complete legalization. Of all of them. The drugs aren't going away. The busts just result in new dealers. Why let organized crime make money - while we waste money enforcing it - when we could reassign every law enforcement officer, funded through taxes on drugs, to the investigate real crime. Person on person crime. None of this NIMBY crap. I mean, as a society we allow women to kill an unborn child, and it's legal because we supposedly wanted to make the practice safer (which hasn't been delivered, IMO). How hypocritical is it if we'll allow babies to be killed for safety, but not the usage of drugs? Anyway, I don't see the "alcohol is more damaging" line of thinking. It's what I told myself when I started smoking grass, but now I see them as equal in stature in terms of the negatives.
  7. Bigger problem? How so?
  8. Tough to say. It all depends on what Miami thinks is priority, offense or defense. Both lines need an overhaul, so the determination between Long and Dorsey will depend on their priorities.
  9. Here's who has signed up and who is who.... Thumper and example1 have until Friday to sign up, if they don't invites will go to ARod2212 and HHM. I want to get the registration over with so we can discuss the league.
  10. Sure, I'll PM you my address. We've been going at $25 a head, at this time participation is not mandatory, but only those participating are eligible.
  11. Come on, Gom. Throw enough crap against the wall and something is going to stick. Note that your premise in October was how to "improve" the Yankees. Just because they have done some of the things you suggested doesn't mean they are, you know, better. Not yet at least. Besides, the three things that will actually improve them and have happened, Girardi/Arod/Abreu, require no thought nor were surprising to anyone.
  12. Yes, they did. Thumper, 26, example1, and Gom. Gom has already signed up. NYRR's. Three more to go and we can get into the details.
  13. All of that is flexible. Perhaps with you being overseas, people can get over their "not on the weekend" issues and we could do it during the day. If not, I'm all for earlier, but no earlier than 6 pm on a weeknight because of work.
  14. ORS

    Barry Bonds

Did SF offer arb? I thought they wanted to get rid of him and he wanted to return. That, to me, spells no arb offer, making the draft compensation moot.
  15. They are going to go out today. I got a little busy over the weekend.
  16. I'm not against your questioning a statistic. What I take exception with is the basis of your criticism. You criticise it at face value without taking the time to understand its formulation. This information is freely available on the internet. You just lack the motivation to do the work, which is fine, but I'm not buying your haphazard analysis. I mean, look at your example of Crisp being driven to 3B by Manny. How many times did that happen with Crisp getting 335/526 ABs in the 7-9 spot? Just another example of how superficial your investigations are. Brilliant. FYI, BP's glossary is open to the public. http://baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?context=all&category=true
  17. I think you can spare us the independent thought tripe. This has nothing to do with being a free thinker. You haven't taken the time to investigate the basis behind any modern stats, and it shows in your lack of understanding them. Subsequently, you frequently reject their validity based not on a criticism of the methodology but on the fact that they don't agree with your preconceived opinion. Kind of sad, really.
  18. You are only comparing their offensive contribution with VORP. Win Shares has it 24 to 12. Don't take this to mean I'm arguing in favor of Lugo's value. I think if one were to plot $/WS you'd find the graph to take on an exponential shape toward the high end, meaning the value is not strictly linear. Those in the top 5-10% are worth more than their value on the line of best fit. Just my opinion.
  19. Oh, we very well know that. I think it's the centerpiece of the current discussion. I thought he was all about the rings? I thought he did what it takes to win? Such a hero should be able to rise above such petty reasoning and do what is best for his team, shouldn't he? You are mistaking the point here. We all acknowledge that Cap'n Calm Eyes has his reasons for not switching. The problem is those reasons don't jive with his lauded team first perception.
  20. Not true at all. I'm giving Jacko and other opinions until the end of this work week (Friday). If he doesn't join, and noboby else offers an opinion about the other 3 spots, then invites are going out to you, 26, Thumper, and example1. What happens if I lose to you? Smack talk? How is that any different than what we get on this site from you now?
  21. No, it doesn't mean there is no middle ground. My point is that you won't change your opinion of him despite statistical measure to the contrary. Thus, you find yourself in the same group in my eyes.
  22. The fact that Jeter has won GGs and was included with Ozzie Smith on the ballot for the Rawlings All-time Defensive team is the reason this article called out Jeter in the introduction of this new statistical measure. To Gom, it is universally accepted that Manny blows in LF and Ortiz is slow. It is not universally accepted by the majority of Yankee fans and the mainstream baseball media that Jeter isn't good in the field, and he is touted (see the GGs et al mentioned above) as an excellent fielder. Hence the article. To 26, please explain how researchers at UPenn equates to Sox fans trying to besmirch Jeter? I don't see it. Face it, you are the reason the article was written.
