And they are off....

Big Brown

I may be dating myself, but one of the few voices that make a sporting event feel important is Brent Musberger's. He kind of annoyed me when I was younger, but he's been around so long that he's grown on me. Glad he is there today at the Belmont.
3. Did the azimuth of either of those caught LDs look like they would have made the gap? He's gone 3B, LO, LO, HR, 1B. He may have been robbed of the cycle.
4. Well, if you find someone to add, I think you can let him have Glavine's place. He'll get into the HOF because he got to 300, but he falls short of the "Best of All-Time" conversation, IMO.
5. He struck out more on a higher mound and with significantly more innings pitched. The counted total number is, of course, higher. I'd be interested to see a K/9+. It doesn't need to be adjusted, but it would be interesting to see how each pitcher's rate compares to league average at the time. Seven of the top 20 seasons are from the deadball era, a lower run scoring environment than when Koufax pitched. This, to me, suggests we might consider mitigating the edge we assign due to statistical variance. The names that appear twice on the top 20 list is a who's who of the greatest of all time. Big Train, Mathewson, Maddux, Clemens, and Pedro (the only guy there 3 times).
6. Wow, two in row smoked at a fielder for Drew.
7. Pedro, and the year is 2000. Pedro has the highest ERA+ in the modern era. He shows up on the single-season leaders list 5 times, all over 200, before Koufax's first appearance at 190. Lower career WHIP (#3 all-time), higer career K/9 (#3 all-time). http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/ERAplus_season.shtml
8. That ball is dancing today.
9. Pettitte's line....
IP|H|R|ER|BB|K|HR 6.2|10|10|10|2|3|2
Billy Bob gives that A-TEYUN, A-FUKIN-TEYUN, A-TEYUN!! http://www.73-87.com/7387_Novelties/TV_movies/vb01.JPG
10. I'm confident a slump is what we are looking at. That said, I think Lowrie will end up being the better player if he ends up a secondbaseman. There's a decision to be made there.
11. YH, I had the same take on it. The being carried and carted off was more about precaution than playing up the injury. If you hurt your knee and are unsure of the extent of the damage while the pain is still present, the best thing to do is not use it until a professional can evaluate it. I think this is what they did.
12. Well, they at least have another cheap, and probably better, internal option in Lowrie - should he prove unable to handle SS like early scouting reports suggest.
13. Meyer signed with Kentucky, whose coach recently resigned to take the Miss State job. Perhaps this will make things a little easier. Signing Link Coach Link
14. Is gameday s***ing all over itself for anyone else?
15. It helps, but by my eye, our last offensive half should not have been as interesting (or frustrating). I thought Lowell was K'd looking. Besides, the strikezone isn't what's done the damage thus far.
16. Looks like a tight zone for both sides tonight. I don't care as long as it's consistent.
17. Wake the f*** up. Seattle is weaksauce, but they are still an MLB team. Give 'em 30 or more outs and they'll beat you.
18. Man, we have 3 hits with no runs, and they have 1 hit with 2 runs. Our H:R ratio is all f***ed up. What do we do?

20. Once the DH takes the field, it's benefit is lost. This happened when Posada switched from DH when Molina got hurt in Fenway this April. It was late in the game and the pitcher's spot never came up in the order.
21. Then they lose the DH and the pitcher has to hit. This is with one OF ejected and one out of the game with an injury, so they have a thin bench with no backup OFs to PH with.
