  1. So you don't think that caring about the journeymen's and scrub's opinions on the management/FO is a waste of time?
  2. Did we read the same story? The one where Dustin Pedroia, the default-Captain-without-the-title, and Gonzalez, the unofficial spokesman for the players, along with "some other players", made these statements? When I say unanimous, I pretty much mean unanimous among those whose opinions actually matter. I don't really care, and I doubt anyone else does either, what Nick Punto or Matt Albers think of Valentine or the FO. It's clear Valentine has the confidence of absolutely no one of importance on this team. Ortiz is the only one I don't know about, but for all his willingness to complain about contracts and the FO he has always been reluctant to publicly air negative opinions on fellow teammates or coaching staff.
  3. I find it heartening that the Sox are apparently unanimous in their dislike of Valentine. I certainly dislike the guy enough. Whether or not you think they are 'whiny prima-donnas", the point remains that, like Emmz said, if no one respects the coach then that can poison the clubhouse and by extension, the play, much more than any supposed "cancerous" players. I had my issues with Francona, but I firmly believe this team would be doing much better were he still in charge. He may have been General Sedgwick rather than General Grant, but Petey, Gonzalez, and everyone else loved the guy and played their asses off for him. The collapse at the end of last season was a collapse all the same, but I never got the impression they were playing lifelessly like they seem to be now. I hate basing my opinion off of my own limited observation of events, but this report doesn't tell me that the players are at fault, it tells me that the manager is.
  4. Hell, this could end up being a Harry Chiti/John McDonald situation. It would certainly sum up the futility of most of this season's activities.
  5. I only have stats to go on for those players that I never saw play, but as far as everyone's picks in this thread for 1B, didn't Youk set a whole bunch of defensive records, including consecutive errorless chances?
  6. Sad day not only for his family and friends, not only for the Red Sox, but for baseball in general. He will be missed.
  7. Yeah, who do they think they are, Steelers fans?
  8. ...like the Red Sox?
  9. Did anyone see the video of the boat outfitted to look like the DeLorean from Back to the Future cruising around McCovey? I now know what I want for Christmas.
  10. I see a lot of "Get rid of so-and-so" and "Bring someone in for X position", but I'm not seeing any suggestions as to whom to replace them with. People want to get rid of Lackey, Beckett, AND Lester. So who is going to pitch for the Sox next season? It's all well and good to want to get rid of half the team, but you need to have solid names to suggest as replacements.
  11. I don't understand what everyone's huge problem is with Sweet Caroline. It's just a song they play during the 7th inning stretch. Most of the crowd gets into it. Why does it matter if they sing along with it or not? Should everyone in the stadium be looked down on for not sitting silently and sulking because the team isn't playing well? If I'm paying to go to the game, I want them to win, but if they don't I'm still going to try to enjoy myself.
  12. I can't even bring myself to be sarcastic about that.
  13. So, I think I'm going to hang myself at the entrance to Fenway. I imagine it won't get the point across, but it will at least make me feel better. This is excruciatingly depressing. I have tried and tried to look at the positive things this season, and tried and tried to believe that the Sox will turn around, but honestly I just don't see it anymore. I'm not going to flood every gamethread with "This team sucks" and "f*** ____", but I am losing my final shreds of optimism. I still hope they can turn this season around. I am encouraged by Crawford and Gonzalez and very happy with Middlebrooks, Morales, Doubront, and Buchholz. I am not worried about Ortiz or Pedroia. I can't wait to see Valentine, Lucchino, or Henry gone but I doubt it will happen. I am still going to watch every game, and cheer for the Sox. I just hope things change next season.
  14. He could donate twenty bucks for every strikeout and still go broke in two days.
  15. Nah, I think the game of his career will always be his walk-off three-run homer off of Mariano Rivera. Not many people can say they've hit a walk-off homer against Rivera. A few have hit game-tying or go-ahead homers, but the list of guys who have walked off on homers against him is only 5. Scutaro, Mueller (of course, we all remember that one), Ichiro, Vernon Wells, and Bill Selby for some reason.
  16. Punto and Melancon. Both of them contribute absolutely nothing to the team. Saltalamacchia isn't great but he is, at least, leading the team in home runs, so he's giving us something. The number of people who have set foot on the Moon is greater than the number of Punto's XBH for the season.
  17. Will Middlebrooks is good at baseball.
  18. The Monster giveth, the Monster taketh away, and the Monster causeth thee to revert to Middle Anglish.
  19. Sure you did. Suuuure you did.
  20. I'm not even wondering why Melancon is still in, I'm wondering why he's still on the team. I never thought I'd miss Okajima.
  21. Chinese women playing volleyball? Awesome! I wish my father wasn't hogging the TV.
