Thats because they are/were. Everybody was taking greenies and whatnot, which are now illegal in baseball and tested for.
The way I see this whole steroid thing is this. It's not fair to villify these guys who have taken steroids because so many players have done so. I mean, I dont even think they contribute much to performance. f***, Wally Joyner took steroids. There were hundreds of Minor Leaguers suspended last year for using steroids, a dozen or so this year as well. Guys like Tony Saunders, Wilson Alvarez (two guys Canseco ratted out in his book) werent/arent great players, by any stretch of the imagination. To me, what steroids does is makes guys look big and add a little strength. I however know that it takes much more than strength to hit a baseball and drive it. A lot of these superstar players who have been accused or admitted using steroids would have hit those home runs anyway. Not as many of course, but most of them.
Now for my theory on motivation for taking steroids. Simple. To get an edge. I dont look at these guys who took steroids and think of them as bad guys/cheaters. I mean, we've all cheated at some point in our lives to get something done. For us High School age kids, you cant deny that you havent copied a friend's homework 5 minutes before class. Maybe some of you guys out there told a little white lie on your resume or something. Should we treat you guys the way the Giambi's, Bonds, and Canseco's of the world are treated? I mean, I dont blame any of them for taking steroids. Like Mike Schmidt said, I would have taken them too if I was in their position. Its comparable to getitng snowtires in the winter or something. Just something to help you out and give you an advantage. Studying really hard for a huge test or something. Same s***.
Now dont get me wrong, i'm not promoting or condoning the use of it. I'm just saying I understand it and everything. Obviously, because it is illegal , it is wrong. And that's why so many people are making a big deal out of it. If it was legal nbody would care. PLayers dump a lot of legal s*** in their body that enhance their performance, but we dont hear about it because their legal. Are they cheaters? Their not doing it naturally either. The way I see it, the past 10-15 years or so was the steroid era. Cool, great, fine. Thats always gonna be and nothing we can do is going to change it. Its like the deadball era, the cookie-cutter/tacky era, etc. Baseball is moving on from it, taking the right steps with the drug testing policy and everything. Lets just take it from there. Lets move into a new era of baseball.
